Editor’s reply: Yes Peter, we have often asked the police to stop and deal with cyclists whose bikes are unfit, unlit or ridden dangerously because we do not condone cycling behaviour that causes risk to others. I asked our police contacts to comment on this and their reply is on page 18. While writing this, can I say that I’m grateful for the letter you recently wrote to the local press answering a motorist who had it in for cyclists. Your hard work in organising the annual ride deserves praise for raising so much money for Macmillan Cancer Relief and of course we will go on giving it publicity every year to encourage cyclists to enter for it.

We are expected to use common sense when dealing with cyclists. In many cases advice is sufficient but when cyclists commit acts we deem as dangerous they are dealt with. An example of this is cyclists who do not stop at red traffic lights. Traffic Department officers are encouraged to issue fixed penalty tickets for this offence and for cycling with no lights on busy and main roads. Cycling in Jersey Apparently Jersey, which has more cars per head of population and per square mile than most other places, is returning to cycling.
