AGAINST THE TIDE Director: Sudath Devapriya Cast: Mauli Ferdinando, Chandani Senaviratne 2003 / 35mm/ Color / 103 min./ Sri Lanka / English subtitles STORY: The father of a 9 year-old boy is a ferryman who one day ferries a group armed men to an island. The father then ferries government soldiers to the island who are after the armed men. The father never returns…A depiction of Sri Lanka’s civil war through the eyes of a child. FIRE FIGHTERS Director: Somaratne Dissanayake Cast: Jackson Anthony, Jayalath Monoratne 2004 / 35mm/ Color / 117 min./ Sri Lanka / English subtitles STORY: Set in English held Sri Lanka in the 19th Century. One day a monk and his disciple start to live in a mountain where a man has been hunting illegally. The man tries to drive the monk and his disciple out of the mountain but has his gun taken away. He then is forced to listen to a sermon against killing. The film, which depicts concepts of Buddhist Sri Lanka, was a big hit in the country. WITH YOU, WITHOUT YOU Director: Prasanna Vithanage Cast: Shyam Fernando, Anjali Patil 2012/ Digital / Color / 90min./ Sri Lanka & India / English subtitles STORY: The owner of a pawn shop starts to fancy a woman who frequently comes to pawn her articles. Learning that she is being forced to marry a man against her will, the owner proposes to her and they marry. However, their relationship is impacted by the civil war between the Sinhalese and the Tamils. We tried asking for directions but could not find anyone speaking English. After a while we saw a German lady looking at us. We RUWINI JAYAWARDANA gave her a Ceylon Tea bag and spoke to her. She finally told us how to nnocence seems to be her hallmark and according to seasoned journalist Arthur get to the harbour. Once in the harbour we encountered a problem because we did not have visas.     Proceeding of International Conference on Contemporary Management - 2016 (ICCM-2016), pp 312-320 REPRESENTATION OF TAMILS IN POST WAR SINHALA MOVIES: SPECIAL REFERENCE TO MOVIES PRODUCED DURING 2010- 2012 Sivapriya.S ABSTRACT An exciting aspect of inter cultural communication is the communication processes through which one culture's perceptions of another culture are created and recreated. From a Symbolic Interactions perspective, the perceptions one culture has of another are constructed through interaction with and about the target culture. Media messages are primary sources of messages that shape one culture's perceptions of another. The existing literature insists that dominant culture often try to maintain their role as powerful and superiors among the subordinate cultures. This study uses content analysis of Sinhala movies to explore the ways in which Tamils are represented in the post war Sinhala movies and to analyze how those images contribute to the development of cultural perceptions about Tamils in Sri Lanka. The quantitative data collected through content analysis were further analyzed using qualitative approaches. The results indicate that Tamils are portrayed as cruel soldiers who are very strong about their mission and even kill their own corps for their mission, minority characters who depend on Sinhalese for their survival, depended who could be rescued by the army, emotionally weak and violent.
