[54'30] About the works Sergei Prokofiev Violin Sonata No. 2 in D major, Op. 94bis (1943) Sergei Prokofiev returned to the Soviet Union in 1936 after 18 years in exile, hoping to become the country’s most important composer following the condemnation of Dmitri Shostakovich by Joseph Stalin’s regime. However, things did not turn out that way. Both the Bolshoi and the Kirov refused to stage Romeo and Juliet, which he had composed in Paris during the summer of 1935. It was finally premiered in 1938 in the Moravian city of Brno. During the war Prokofiev’s situation improved, but the Soviet regime never really pardoned its “prodigal son”. After 1945, the composer, plagued by poor health, was sub- jected to official condemnations and financial difficulties for the rest of his life.

  • Orchestra Sex Disparity: Experimental Evidence from Audience Members
Orchestra Sex Disparity: Experimental Evidence from Audience Members Richard Gong* UC Berkeley This paper presents a novel experiment that recruits 191 experimental subjects on Ama- zon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Experimental subjects listen to and judge musicians who per- form audio recordings of classical music. Subjects also guess what instruments various mu- sicians play given just their names. Experimental subjects recognize that some instruments are more commonly played by female musicians and others by male musicians. Yet, no sex discrimination is detected in musician performance ratings. 1 Introduction In classical music, the sound a musician produces when playing an instrument has paramount importance. Professional musicians and novice audience members largely believe the quality of a performance should be judged by sound (Tsay 2013; Mehr & Scannell & Winner 2018). Yet, orchestras, which have been historically male dominated, have not been welcoming to all musicians of strong ability. In 1982, Sabine Meyer toured the United States as the Berlin Philharmonic’s first female clarinetist. Despite a strong endorsement from orchestra’s principal conductor, Herbert von Karajan, orchestra members voted, 73 to 4, against offering Meyer a permanent position. Having won an audition, Ann Hobson Pilot joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) as a harpist in *e-mail: ([email protected]) Many thanks to Sydnee Caldwell for advising me through this senior thesis. 1 1969. On her first day on the job, an older member of the orchestra charged up to her and mocked, “You must fry some mean chicken.” Pilot was the orchestra’s first black musician.

2018/19 Season September - December 2018 2 • I am very much looking forward to focusing on a beloved composer in 2018/19. Our Schumann Song Series will explore in depth the great composer’s extraordinary output, which is amongst the most rewarding within the entire Lieder tradition. I am very pleased to welcome Florian Boesch who, with Malcolm Martineau, will open the series. As the season progresses, we will be focusing on Robert Schumann’s highly personal art with the Elias String Quartet interpreting his great string quartets. Whether as classical violinist or improviser, composer or orchestral director, Pekka Kuusisto certainly Director’s enlivens the musical scene with levels of energy and engagement few can match. As he continues to refresh the classics, he proves equally able to enthuse Introduction audiences for new music conceived in a variety of genres. He joins us in residence throughout the season. Mozart made Vienna his home for the last decade of his life, and now Viennese pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja will be presenting a series which brings his music together with works from the school founded by Arnold Schoenberg, whose impact on the course of musical history would be profound. With his interest in period instruments and historically-informed performance practice, Alexander Melnikov is one of the most stimulating musicians of our time. You will have a chance to experience just how seamlessly he can move between different repertoires when, in the opening concert of his residency, he offers Prokofiev’s wispy but characterful collection of 20 miniature ‘fleeting visions’. He will follow this by joining the Cuarteto Casals in Brahms’s grandly impassioned Piano Quintet, a cornerstone of the Romantic chamber repertory.
