MARY HIGH SCHOOL * VOLUME XL * ISSUE 5 * FEBRUARY 2011 Valentine’s Day came early for the stu- dents at STVM this year, as the school held the first annual Winter Sweetheart Dance on Saturday, February 5. This Winter Dance was held in the main gym and Student Center. The Student Council and Director of Special Events, Mrs. Jennifer Ringer, transformed the school into a winter silvery wonderland with hanging lights and silver accents. The students voted for freshmen Patrick Pitman and Kathleen Mundy as the king and queen of the Winter Dance. The group stayed overnight in Washington D.C. and on Monday, January 24, participated in the Right to Life “March for Life” event. “Irish for Life” joined thousands of American citizens at this annual event that protests abortion. Science Fair held at STVM STVM is hosting a local science fair on Wednesday, February 16, in the Cosgrove Center. Biology, chemistry, earth science and physical science will all be represented. The public is welcome to view the projects from 3:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-7:00 p.m. An Award’s Ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m on the day of the fair. Students who are rated superior may be selected to attend the 63rd Western Reserve District 5 Science Day at The University of Akron on Saturday, March 19, 2011. Ohio Magazine awards teachers Teachers from STVM will be recognized in Ohio Magazine’s 2011 Excellence in Educa- tion- Private High Schools program. The program honors Ohio’s top private high school teachers who are making a difference and contributing to achieving Excellence in Educa- tion. Hendry The Information School Although music is considered to be an important part of adolescence and young adulthood, little is known about music and homeless youth. Accordingly, this dissertation research investigated the role of music in the lives of homeless young people, aged 15-25. The study was conducted in Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia and engaged homeless young people (n=202) and service providers staff who work at agencies that provide support for homeless young people (n=24). Homeless young people completed surveys (n=202), design activities, which included drawing and story writing (n=149), and semi-structured interviews (n=40). Service providers completed semi-structured interviews (n=24). Data analysis included descriptive analysis of survey data and qualitative coding of the design activities and interview responses. Findings indicated that music was an important part of everyday life for homeless young people, who listened to music daily (98%), owned music players (89%), and had wide- ranging and eclectic tastes in music which did not vary based on location.

The objective of the research is to find out the types of associative meanings, to describe the associative meanings used in the song lyrics of the World of our own album, to find out the reasons of for the use the associative meaning as it is. The data of the research were the phrases and words in the song lyrics of Westlife’s World of Our Own album. The method used in this research was the descriptive qualitative method. The theory used in the research was the theory of associative meaning by Leech in Semantics study of meaning. The types of associative meaning found in the data were Reflective Meaning (RM) with 72 lines (36%), Affective Meaning (AM) with 49 lines(25%), Collocative Meaning (CLM) with 31 lines (16%), Social Meaning (SM) with 24 (12%), Connotative Meaning (CM) with 21 lines (11%).

  • The Intersecting Identities of an Adolescent Mexican American
    THE INTERSECTING IDENTITIES OF AN ADOLESCENT MEXICAN AMERICAN GIRL CONSTRUCTED VIA HER LITERATE ACTIVITIES by Xiaodi Zhou (Under the Direction of Peter Smagorinsky) ABSTRACT In this case study conducted as a narrative inquiry lasting for three years, the author describes the lived realities of an early adolescent Mexican American girl living with undocumented parents as represented through her transactions with literacy. The body of this paper is organized into three articles. The first article describes my participant’s experiences growing up in an undocumented Mexican American family. Evidence in this paper primarily consists of observations and interview transcripts, wherein she discussed both her mother’s border crossing experience, and her everyday life in the U.S. as the first U.S.-born member of the family. Utilizing Anzaldúa (1987) and DeChaine’s (2012) notion of cultural bordering and García and Wei’s (2014) concept of translanguaging, I describe the way she captured her living experiences and cultural and linguistic positioning through language. The second article focuses on my participant’s literate experiences, particularly writing, as a means to convey her complex cultural and national affiliation. Her dialogic cultural positioning was manifested through translanguaging and hybrid cultural references (Bakhtin, 1986; Bhabha, 1990; García & Wei, 2014). This article derives much of its support from the actual writing she composed, and describes the relationship between language and cultural identity, both in its formation and its expression. I further contend that bilingual and translanguaging processes act as bridge between her cultural and linguistic memberships, and function as indication of her cultural identification. The last article addresses the effect of intersectionality (Núñez, 2014) in my participant’s identity, and how literacy often acts as that intersection.
