Cecelia Parks: Essay When given the assignment to research a women’s issue in modern European history, I chose to study Millicent Garrett Fawcett, the leader of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS), the largest women’s suffrage organization in Great Britain. I explored her time as head of this organization and the strategies she employed to become enfranchised, concentrating on the latter part of her tenure. My research was primarily based in two pieces of Fawcett’s own writing: a history of the suffrage movement, Women’s Suffrage: A Short History of a Great Movement, published in 1912, and her memoir, What I Remember, published in 1925. Because my research focused so much on Fawcett’s own work, I used that writing as my starting point. -

Diane Guerrero: Hello? Ello? Hola? Can you hear me? I'm just kidding. I'm in your ears. I'm Diane Guerrero, and this is How It Is, where you hear women tell their own stories in their own words. We're unfiltered, real, and totally ourselves. Okay, you guys. I am so excited to be here with you all because we have so much to talk about. I don't know about you, but every day I'm getting tons and tons of information on basically every subject, between the news alerts and the Facebooks and the Tweets and the DMs, it's constant. It's a lot. And what I realize, is that even with all that information, what I really crave is wisdom. And to get that wisdom, I turn to women. To hear their stories, to get their advice, to absorb what they've learned, since they are the experts in their own lives. We are the experts in our own lives. Isn't that crazy? We know How It Is. Diane Guerrero: For this season of How It Is, we've gotten together with the wisest women we know. I'm talking about Lena Waithe, Krista Tippett, Ellen Powell, Mónica Ramírez, Glennon Doyle, Jenny Yang, and so many more. We're talking about this Me Too moment of reckoning. Around sex, sexism, sexual assault, and sexual harassment. Even saying those words out loud is hard. But it's necessary. Because really, what Me Too and Times Up have become are a shorthand for how women use our voices to make change. -

Abstract This thesis analyzes facets of resistance in the lyrics of female country music performers and explores how their articulations of female resistance draw on and rework Appalachian folk traditions within country music. Beginning with the musical practices of Appalachian women, who used music to lament their lives restricted by domestic responsibilities, this thesis examines expressions of female resistance through lyrical analysis, with a concentration on female country performers from 1995 to the present. Despite evolving into a performance tradition, female resistance in country music continues to address the lived experiences of its female audience. As such, the female resistance tradition is an enduring component of country music that has addressed women’s issues for over a century. -

The Feminist Case for Acknowledging Women's Acts of Violence t Jamie R. Abrams ABSTRACT: This Article makes a feminist case for acknowledging women's acts of violence as consistent with-not threatening to-the goals of the domestic violence movement and the feminist movement. It concludes that broadly understanding women's use of strength, power, coercion, control, and violence, even illegitimate uses, can be framed consistent with feminist goals. Beginning this conversation is a necessary-if uncomfortable-step to give movement to the movement to end gendered violence. The domestic violence movement historically framed its work on a gender binary of men as potential perpetrators and women as potential victims. This binary was an essential starting point to defining and responding to domestic violence. The movement has since struggled to address women as perpetrators. It has historically deployed a "strategy of containment" to respond to women as perpetrators. This strategy includes bringing male victims of domestic violence within existing services, monitoring exaggerations and misstatements about the extent of women's violence, and noting the troublesome line between perpetrator/victim for women. This strategy achieved specific and important goals to domestic violence law reforms. These goals included retaining domestic violence's central and iconic framing as a women's issue, preserving critical funding sources and infrastructure to serve victims, and thwarting obstructionist political challenges largely waged by men's rights groups. While acknowledging that these goals were sound and central to the historic underpinnings of domestic violence law reforms, this Article considers whether the strategy of containment is too myopic and reactive to endure. -

Volume 92 Number 877 March 2010 Women fighters and the ‘beautiful soul’ narrative Laura Sjoberg Laura Sjobergis assistant professor of political science at the University of Florida. Abstract This article explores women’s presence in military forces around the world, looking both at women’s service as soldiers and at the gendered dimensions of their soldiering particularly, and soldiering generally. It uses the ‘beautiful soul’ narrative to describe women’s relationship with war throughout its history, and explores how this image of women’s innocence of and abstention from war has often contrasted with women’s actual experiences as soldiers and fighters. One of the great stories in the history of modern warfare is that of Jeanne d’Arc. With the French on the verge of losing the Hundred Years’ War and Henry VI of England claiming rights to the French throne, teenage Jeanne – inspired by the voices of saints – cut her hair, dressed in a man’s uniform, and took up arms for the French cause. After convincing the French leadership of her calling, Jeanne passed the necessary examinations, and was given troops to command and a military rank as captain. Jeanne d’Arc led the French to their first victories over the British in memory. Particularly, her victory at the battle of Orleans in May of 1429 is widely considered miraculous, and credited with allowing the French to crown Charles VII King of France that summer. At the coronation, Jeanne was given a place of honour next to the king, and ennobled for her services. The next year, however, she was captured in battle and turned over to an ecclesiastical court, which tried her for heresy and witchcraft. -
