Good riddance. ‘FIRST-AID KIT’ IN JOURNALISM WHAT IS JOURNALISM? JOURNALISM is the art of writing for publication in newspapers and other media, embracing all thoughts and actions that have significance and interest to the readers. In this kit, we will only concentrate on print journalism. * * * WHAT IS NEWS? News is an oral or written report of an event that happened, is happening, will happen in the North, East, West, or South that is of interest to the reader and which should be reported. But what is interesting to one is not always interesting to another. * * * Elements of the News 1. Conflict 2. Immediacy or Timeliness 3. Proximity or Nearness 4. Prominence 5. Significance 6. Names 7. Drama 8. Oddity and Unusualness 9. Romance and Adventure 10. Sex 11. Progress 12. Animals 13. Number 14. Emotion * * * BASIC RULE IN WRITING: ACCURACY, BREVITY, CLARITY. ABC. * * * NEWS WRITING EXERCISE Identify the elements involved on the following headlines. There may be more than one answer. 1. Principal issues new school policy 2. Dog saves master’s life by attacking robbers 3. Cure for AIDS discovered 4. Man becomes pregnant 5. Icebergs appear in Northern Luzon 6. Senator injured in a car accident 7. Two solons lambaste each other, then end in a fist fight 8. Woman permitted to celebrate holy mass 9. Filipino wins Miss World title 10. 10 killed in shootout * * * Different forms of writing an incident Situation: A fire broke out and four persons made their separate essays on what happened. For a 10-year-old grade school pupil, “I saw a fire. It was a big red fire. It burned a house. There were many people around. Some men put water on the fire.” For a romantic high school student, “Fearful scarlet tongues arose to the star-studded heaven and licked greedily at the doomed edifice while the stout-hearted firefighters risked their all to quench the terrible conflagration.” For a lady bystander, “You know, Mare, there was a fire in our community. I think it cost the owner a great deal of money. The date was August 8. August is the eighth month. So I bet in the lottery, 8-16-24-32-40-48.” For a campus paper writer, “A fire of undetermined origin razed to the ground a two-storey apartment owned by lawyer Herman Lagon of 80 Lopez Jaena St., Jaro Iloilo City, last night. Four trucks from the Jaro Fire Station subdued the fire within an hour. The damage estimated by the police at P500,000 was covered by insurance.” The combination of simple, vivid and dignified articles produces a copy simple enough for Mr. Average Reader to understand. We call it news article. * * * Narrative vs News (Example: Dog hero story) Narrative: Pyramid (from less important to climax) News: Inverted Pyramid (from climax to less important) * * * Sample News Headline (ulo ng balita) Dog dies saving blind master Lead (pamatnubay)– Most important facts A FOUR-YEAR-OLD dog saved the life of his blind master, Thursday night, but the canine’s loyalty cost the trusty animal his life. Less important facts Police theorized that Escobanez was knocked unconscious when he fell, his head hitting a stone. Potpot, his dog, apparently tried to shield its master from the cold and the rain by draping itself over the fallen man. When discovered this morning by the Police Patrol, Escobanez was still out cold. The dog lay near, dead. Relatives of Escobanez who is still a bachelor, told authorities that he always took nightly strolls at about 11 p.m. with his dog. Minor facts According to doctors, only the warmth from the dog’s body saved Escobanez from certain death. Escobanez told police that he remembers nothing of the incident. A wallet containing P500 was still in his pocket leading the authorities to rule out robbery. * * * Types of news stories A. Scope or origin a. Local news b. Foreign news c. Dateline news B. PRIVILEGE SPEECH OF REP. PUNO REP. PUNO. Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, my dear colleagues in the Sixteenth Congress, nothing gives us greater pleasure than to recognize a great performance when we see it. I rise today to recognize the Gilas Pilipinas national basketball team, which last night bagged the silver medal in the 27th FIBA Asia Championships, earning it a coveted slot to finally participatate among the world’s best in the upcoming FIBA World Championship in Madrid, Spain next year. Mr. Speaker, today is a glorious day for Philippine sports. Through the unpararelled team effort, strong determination and unwavering commitment of the Gilas Pilipinas, the Philippines was able to register the strongest finish yet in 27 years in the FIBA Asia Championships. Basketball- loving Filipinos all over the world have long believed that we can sustain, and even surpass this impressive showing not only because of our national team’s proven basketball skills and acumen but because finally, we now have the organization, teamwork and resolve to unite under one flag and country, toward the attainment of a common and shared goal. Today is a day of jubilation, Mr. Speaker, my dear colleagues, as we celebrate not just a victory on the basketball court, but of the triumph of the undying Filipino competitive spirit and unrelenting will to succeed. Several factors, events, and people came together and saw fruition in the years and months leading up and culminating in our national team’s inspiring performance from August 1 to 11, 2013. First of all, I salute the players, they were the ones who played hard, spent a lot of early mornings and late nights for practice and team meetings.

  • Shifting the 'White Gaze' on Black Bodies in Philippine Collegiate Basketball Toward a Structural Understanding of Covert Racism in the Global South
SATWINDER SINGH REHAL Shifting the 'White Gaze' on Black Bodies in Philippine Collegiate Basketball Toward a Structural Understanding of Covert Racism in the Global South In a postcolonial Global South context, the representation of race seems to persist and is manifested through the media scripting of Black African sporting bodies that in effect extends the deployment of the “White gaze,” the effort to explore the Black body within the context of white supremacy. Through a qualitative content analysis of media texts in the Philippines, the paper illustrates how in a postmodern context racial stereotypes literally play out within Philippine collegiate basketball framed by the “White gaze” that expresses a covert form of racism that supports an essentialist deployment of categories of race. The paper ends with a call for praxis that critiques subtle racialized ideologies and institutionalized racism in a postmodern Global South context. KEYWORDS: Black bodies, collegiate basketball, Global South, new racism, Philippines, White gaze Social Transformations Vol. 8, No. 2, Nov. 2020 / 125–156 INTRODUCTION According to Stuart McPhail Hall (1990), a Jamaican-born British cultural theorist and one of the proponents of the British Cultural Studies school of thought, media deliberately or subconsciously constructs race in a way that reproduces ideologies of racism. In reference to “Blacks” in sports, their representation has unquestionably suffered from a system of covertly entrenched racist ideology, which have in turn inscribed them with sets of “unquestionable assumptions” (Hall 1990, 13) about their physical attributes and athleticism. As Hall (1990, 10–11) argues, “the media are especially important sites for the production, reproduction, and circulation of ideologies [that] work by the transformation of discourses .

  • A Study of Aurelio Tolentino's Articulation of Nationalism
i YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW: A STUDY OF AURELIO TOLENTINO’S ARTICULATION OF NATIONALISM AND IDENTITY THROUGH THEATRE IN THE PHILIPPINES DURING THE AMERICAN COLONIAL PERIOD Lily Ann B. Villaraza, Ph.D. Department of History Northern Illinois University, 2017 Trude Jacobsen, Director This dissertation centers on the importance of cultural production to the process of creating a coherent national identity and a unified political state in the Philippines. More specifically, I will examine role of theatre in relation to the general development of the nation and the state through Aurelio Tolentino’s plays Luhang Tagalog and Kahapon, Ngayon, at Bukas. The Philippines and Filipino people pose a unique case study in the formation of both a specific and coherent national identity and an independent political state space because of geography, varied cultural influences, linguistic diversity, and colonial past. Because of these factors, it is a wonder that a coherent Philippine state exists, much less the generally accepted notion of a Filipino national identity. I argue that cultural production, particularly theatre, actively championed the broader acceptance of a singular Filipino national identity and individual belonging to a collective state at one of the most critical moment in Philippine history; the exit of Spanish colonial rule, the entrance of American imperial rule, and active assertion of political independence of the Philippine Islands by and for the Filipino people. The knowledge formation and critical dialogue occurring through theatre nurtured the notion of a Filipino national identity and buoyed the possibility of a Philippine state across the diverse linguistic and geographic terrain of the archipelago in opposition to the emerging American empire.
