Identi- ties and hermeneutical uses. It is the 10th edition of the Colloquium organized by the Center for Hermeneutics, Phenomenology and Practical Philosophy of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social-Political Sciences, “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași. Each of the previous encounters addressed a phe- nomenon or a concept (game, body, power, intersubjectivity, public sphere, image and text, the European idea, interpretation or justice) and the participants were invited to address it from the perspective of their respective research fields, but with sufficient theoretical and methodological openness to leave room for debates, questioning and polemics. The organizers have suggested a herme- neutical approach to integrate the results of these discussions, without omitting the critical or analytical perspectives. These results (collective volumes or special journal issues) have always found consistency and coherence from the way the questions were formulated rather than from the answers given to them and from the dialogue that resulted rather than from the initial positions assumed. This year’s edition has focused upon the phenomenon of tradition, as the aim and basis of identity, but also as a discursive form always assumed differently in the history of European thinking (as a legitimizing discourse, as a burden of thought, as a mere rhetorical bricolage or as a horizon of meaning). A couple of questions have arisen from this plurality. The call for papers of the colloquium mentions some of them: What does it take for me to survive a change, and still be myself at the end of it ? How do we live together with our different identities ? At the same time, how are collective identities formed, of a community or of a nation, cultural or spiritual ? How is something transmitted, and why is something else lost, forgotten ? 5 Introduction The three sections of the colloquium (Tradition and Identity. Historical and Philosophical Perspectives, Aesthetics and Hermeneutics, Cultural Heritage) covered nearly 60 participants who responded, each in a distinct manner: from the perspectives of cultural studies, of literature and literary studies, of political and communication sciences, of philosophy and history, psychology, or sociology. The discussions after each presentation (and, of course, the cof- fee breaks, the real “speculative moments” of the colloquium) surpassed, as always, the limitations and boundaries of disciplines, making visible the need to formulate unifying questions and the freedom of dialogue.   • Father André Scrima – a New Kind of Fool for Christ Marius
    M!"#$% V!%#&'!($* !e complex and often puzzling personality of Father André Scrima was misapprehended for a long time. !is article discusses the reasons for such a misapprehension and o"ers some possible explanations for his paradoxical behaviour. An overview of the reception of Father Scrima’s life and works shows a dynamic at work that can only generate optimism. His participation in the Burning Bush group at the Antim monastery in Bucharest was one of the most important formative experiences, where a wide cultural and scienti#c perspective was fused with an in- depth religious experience. Father Scrima may be better understood if we consider him the #rst of a new kind of fools for Christ, a kind that is well-equipped to face the challenges of tomorrow. Keywords: André Scrima, Daniil Sandu Tudor, !e Burning Bush, foolishness for Christ, hesychasm He was a man that would experience the enthusiasm of a child when a new decimal of a universal constant was discovered. He used to tame an unbro- ken sacred text in a generous hermeneutics by o!ering it the "re of certain astrophysical theories and blending them with the phenomenology of the opening one’s heart in a hesychastic manner. Could this be the reason why the impressive erudition of Father André Scrima is still hard to accept and to understand in the Orthodox ecclesiastical environment? Our hypothesis that will be dealt with in the current paper is that all the things mentioned above are not enough to explain his misapprehension: most likely, Father André Scrima was the "rst person belonging to a new kind of fool for Christ.

However, the generalized war that shook the foundations of Europe again, represented, apparently paradoxically, the favorable context for some people to fully realize that everyday experience – regardless of the rhythm of their lives – only makes sense if it shapes them spiritually. Among them was also Sandu Tudor, who, at the end of the Second World War, sharpened his need to consolidate the contents of the assimilated orthodox mystical tradition, which was, in his vision, an efficient way of preserving humanity. It is well-known that the proclamation of the Romanian communist state was equivalent to the introduction of the new wave of repression against the Orthodox believers and, in particular, the mystics, so that in 1948 it resulted in the arrest of many members of the Rugul Aprins (The Burning Bush), especially among the students. In these circumstances, wishing to keep them from the roll of the anticipated communist oppression, Patriarch Justinian ordered, after 1948, the removal of Fathers Benedict Ghiuș, Sofian Boghiu and Arsenie Papacioc, but also of the founder of the Rugul Aprins – Sandu Tudor, a fact which did not escaped the watchful eye of the Securitatea (Security). In this context, as the world became more and more feared because the atheist communist offensive against the Church slowly became visible, Monk Agaton Tudor, becoming the abbot of the Crasna Monastery, continued his spiritual mission, credibly pleading (hence the popularity) for a doctrine other than the accepted one (communist ideology).

Ioan ŞARPE* Abstract: Taking into account a broader political and cultural context, we can bet- ter understand the genesis of Decree 410/1959 and we can appreciate accord- ingly the measures taken by Patriarch Justinian to develop and save monasticism from the constraints created by the communist regime. To that effect a sketchy arch over time is drawn, from which one can observe the existence of an anti- monastic current that lies latent in the Christian civilization, either because it is considered obsolete and a deviant form of Christian living that takes hold of human and economic resources to the detriment of the state, or because it real- izes its strength to oppose it and to thwart the expansion of doctrinal and cultural “renewal” currents.
