Celebrities As Political Representatives: Explaining the Exchangeability of Celebrity Capital in the Political Field
Celebrities as Political Representatives: Explaining the Exchangeability of Celebrity Capital in the Political Field Ellen Watts Royal Holloway, University of London Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Politics 2018 Declaration I, Ellen Watts, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Ellen Watts September 17, 2018. 2 Abstract The ability of celebrities to become influential political actors is evident (Marsh et al., 2010; Street 2004; 2012, West and Orman, 2003; Wheeler, 2013); the process enabling this is not. While Driessens’ (2013) concept of celebrity capital provides a starting point, it remains unclear how celebrity capital is exchanged for political capital. Returning to Street’s (2004) argument that celebrities claim to speak for others provides an opportunity to address this. In this thesis I argue successful exchange is contingent on acceptance of such claims, and contribute an original model for understanding this process. I explore the implicit interconnections between Saward’s (2010) theory of representative claims, and Bourdieu’s (1991) work on political capital and the political field. On this basis, I argue celebrity capital has greater explanatory power in political contexts when fused with Saward’s theory of representative claims. Three qualitative case studies provide demonstrations of this process at work. Contributing to work on how celebrities are evaluated within political and cultural hierarchies (Inthorn and Street, 2011; Marshall, 2014; Mendick et al., 2018; Ribke, 2015; Skeggs and Wood, 2011), I ask which key factors influence this process. -

Squaring the Circle a Case Study in the History of Mathematics the Problem
Squaring the Circle A Case Study in the History of Mathematics The Problem Using only a compass and straightedge, construct for any given circle, a square with the same area as the circle. The general problem of constructing a square with the same area as a given figure is known as the Quadrature of that figure. So, we seek a quadrature of the circle. The Answer It has been known since 1822 that the quadrature of a circle with straightedge and compass is impossible. Notes: First of all we are not saying that a square of equal area does not exist. If the circle has area A, then a square with side √A clearly has the same area. Secondly, we are not saying that a quadrature of a circle is impossible, since it is possible, but not under the restriction of using only a straightedge and compass. Precursors It has been written, in many places, that the quadrature problem appears in one of the earliest extant mathematical sources, the Rhind Papyrus (~ 1650 B.C.). This is not really an accurate statement. If one means by the “quadrature of the circle” simply a quadrature by any means, then one is just asking for the determination of the area of a circle. This problem does appear in the Rhind Papyrus, but I consider it as just a precursor to the construction problem we are examining. The Rhind Papyrus The papyrus was found in Thebes (Luxor) in the ruins of a small building near the Ramesseum.1 It was purchased in 1858 in Egypt by the Scottish Egyptologist A. -

Circle of the Dance, Alma Brasileira the Art of Clea
CIRCLE OF THE DANCE, ALMA BRASILEIRA THE ART OF CLEA GALHANO, JOAN GRIFFITH AND LUCIA NEWELL BEATRIZ H. RAMOS AMARAL "Music and movement, as organic expressions of what it means to be human, are so entrenched and interlaced that it is difficult to define where the boundary between them is, or even if there is a boundary." (Carlos D. Fregtman) This intersection of musical styles - samba, choro, bossa-nova, baião – and talented interpreters and the works of some of the best Brazilian composers could only result in a splendid album. CIRCLE OF THE DANCE was recorded in Minneapolis, Minnesota by Clea Galhano (flutist), Joan Griffith (guitar and composer) and Lucia Newell (vocals), who make up the Alma Brasileira (Brazilian Soul) trio. The producer is Steven Wiese, and pianist Laura Caviani and percussionist Tim O'Keefe contributed to some of the tracks. The fifteen tracks of this CD brings us work by Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pascoal, Pixinguinha, Mário Mascarenhas, Luis Bonfá, Waldir Azevedo and Ari Barroso, as well as five pieces by Joan Griffith, all compositions based on traditional Brazilian rhythms such as the baião, samba and bossa nova, through which the interpreter/composer/arranger navigates with extreme ease and comfort. As soon as one listens to this CD for the first time, one is overtaken by the desire to listen to it again, and again and again ... an infinite number of times. This important phonographic record is the result of the musical meeting of Clea Galhano, Joan Griffith and Lucia Newell, all artists with solid international careers. Clea is a Brazilian flute virtuoso who has lived in the US for many years (2), and Joan and Lucia are well-known artists. -
Independent Television Producers in England
Negotiating Dependence: Independent Television Producers in England Karl Rawstrone A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of the West of England, Bristol for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries, University of the West of England, Bristol November 2020 77,900 words. Abstract The thesis analyses the independent television production sector focusing on the role of the producer. At its centre are four in-depth case studies which investigate the practices and contexts of the independent television producer in four different production cultures. The sample consists of a small self-owned company, a medium- sized family-owned company, a broadcaster-owned company and an independent- corporate partnership. The thesis contextualises these case studies through a history of four critical conjunctures in which the concept of ‘independence’ was debated and shifted in meaning, allowing the term to be operationalised to different ends. It gives particular attention to the birth of Channel 4 in 1982 and the subsequent rapid growth of an independent ‘sector’. Throughout, the thesis explores the tensions between the political, economic and social aims of independent television production and how these impact on the role of the producer. The thesis employs an empirical methodology to investigate the independent television producer’s role. It uses qualitative data, principally original interviews with both employers and employees in the four companies, to provide a nuanced and detailed analysis of the complexities of the producer’s role. Rather than independence, the thesis uses network analysis to argue that a television producer’s role is characterised by sets of negotiated dependencies, through which professional agency is exercised and professional identity constructed and performed. -
