  • PRESSEMITTEILUNG Retrospektive Kenji Mizoguchi 6. Dezember Bis
PRESSEMITTEILUNG Retrospektive Kenji Mizoguchi 6.

  • Tazuko Sakane
Tazuko Sakane Also Known As: 坂根⽥鶴⼦, 佐久間⽥鶴⼦ Lived: December 7, 1904 - September 2, 1975 Worked as: assistant director, director, editor, screenwriter, script supervisor Worked In: China, Japan by Xinyi Zhao Tazuko Sakane was the first female director in Japan. By 1936, Sakane had taken a variety of positions at virtually all stages of film production, ranging from director and editor to script supervisor and assistant director. She remained the only female director in Japan until 1953, when the actress-turned-director Tanaka Kinuyo made her first film. Not only is Sakane’s life illustrative of the constricting roles enforced by Japanese society almost vengefully upon women, but her involvement at Manchuria Film Association further poses questions pivotal in theorizing the mutual implications of feminism, imperialism, and colonialism. That being said, Sakane has long been marginalized, if not erased, from the history of Japanese cinema. At the historical juncture when cinema started to entwine with nationalism in Japan in the early 1900s, Sakane was born in Kyoto, a city dubbed “Japan’s Hollywood.” Sakane’s father was a wealthy inventor and businessman with connections to the film industry. As a young child, Sakane developed her cinephilia through frequenting cinemas with her family. She went to Doshisha Women’s College to pursue a degree in English literature at a time when only one percent of Japanese women received higher education, yet her stepmother forced her to quit college in her second year (Ikegawa 2011, 7). At the age of twenty, Sakane’s parents arranged for her to marry a gynecologist.

Riis Hayasaka Fumio (1914–55) worked with some of Japan’s most famous film directors during his sixteen year career while winning numerous accolades for both his film and concert music, though his name and work are little known outside of his native country. Self-taught, he brought new ideas to Japanese music and was a key figure in the developments made in the post- war era and a major influence on subsequent composers. Hayasaka’s style blended traditional Asian musical elements—primarily Japanese, though he also studied Indonesian and Chinese music—with the Western orchestra, creating what he called a Pan-Asian style.

UNIVERSITY OF READING An Invitation to Travel The Marketing and Reception of Japanese Film in the West 1950-1975 Submitted for Ph.D. degree Department of Film, Theatre & Television Boel Ulfsdotter March 2008 ABSTRACT An Invitation to Travel – The Marketing and Reception of Japanese Film in the West 1950-1975 is a reception study which presents the events and efforts that characterize the reception of Japanese film in France, Great Britain and the United States, after World War Two. Chapter One presents the research questions informing this study and discusses the historically located Western cultural concepts involved such as the aesthetics of art cinema, Japonisme, and the notion of ‘Japaneseness’. The argumentation as such is based on the presumption of a still prevailing Orientalist discourse at the time. The thesis discusses the Japanese film industry’s need to devise a new strategy of doing export business with the West in relation to the changed postwar context in Chapter Two. The preparations on the part of the Japanese to distribute their films in the West through different modes of transnational publicity are in focus here, from introductory ‘film weeks’, to marketing vehicles such as UniJapan Film Quarterly, and the first Western books on Japanese film history. The thesis then proceeds to deal with the groundbreaking introduction of this first non-occidental national cinema from four different angles; exhibition (Chapter Three), critical reception (Chapter Four), publicity (Chapter Five) and canon formation (Chapter Six). Chapter Three looks into the history of Western exhibition of Japanese film in the countries involved in this study and identifies divergent attitudes between institutional and commercial screenings.

Early 20th century, most of Japanese cinema theatres employed Benshi and live musicians. The Benshi are Japanese storytellers performing live narration for silent films. The 1923 earthquake, the bombing of Tokyo during WWII and Japan’s natural humidity partially destroyed the film stock of this period. There are no many surviving films. Be Like A Rose, directed by Mikio Naruse, 1935 Talkie films arrived in Japan in the early 30s, but silent films were still being produced, until the Benshi’s strike (1932). In the early 30’s, Kenji Mizoguchi and a group of progressive filmmakers produced left-leaning “social tendency films”. But Japan’s increasingly militarist government instituted a crackdown on the political content of films, which were expected to conform a national policy of pro-family and pro- military values.
