In the 2006 season, the 38-year-old Audi factory driver is shouldering as Kommunikation 85045 Ingolstadt many as two racing commitments: In the Audi A4 DTM, he contests Europe’s www.audi.com most popular touring car series which is scheduled to start at Hockenheim on April 9th and, in addition, he is part of Audi’s ambitious diesel project in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The differences between these two racing disciplines notwithstanding, there is one thing they have in common: Tom Kristensen is considered one of the hot favourites in both. As many as seven times Kristensen has won the world’s most famous endurance race in France, now being the record holder. After his victory in the Audi R10 TDI at Sebring (Florida) this weekend, the new diesel sportscar’s debut, the Dane will be flying on Sunday night directly from Miami to London, where the official DTM tests at Brands Hatch are scheduled to start on Monday. There, Kristensen will be taking the wheel of his new Audi A4 DTM – bearing the internal designation “R12 plus” – for the first time. Yet the record holder has no problem switching from the 650-hp open-air sports prototype to the DTM touring car in which he claimed third place in the Championship last year: “No matter whether I climb into the R10 TDI or the A4 DTM – I always immediately feel that I’m sitting in an Audi.” Tomorrow: Tests in the DTM – every day counts Communication Motorsport Telephone +49 (0)841 89 34200, fax +49 (0)841 89 38617 E-Mail [email protected] Photographs, sound bites and additional information on the Internet: www.audi-motorsport.info (Accreditation necessary) 1/1 .

  • From the Audi V8 Quattro to the Audi A4 DTM
Ingolstadt, 12 March 2006 Motorsport / 28 days until the start of 2006 DTM season From the Audi V8 quattro to the Audi A4 DTM • Audi is one of the most successful brands in the DTM When the new DTM series starts at Hockenheim on April 9th, there will be a small anniversary to celebrate: 2006 marks Audi’s tenth year of contesting the most AUDI AG popular international touring car racing series. Four champion’s titles, 35 victories, Kommunikation 85045 Ingolstadt 30 pole positions and 26 fastest race laps make Audi one of the most successful www.audi.com brands in DTM history. At its first appearance in the DTM Audi immediately left a lasting impression. In the Audi V8 quattro, a vehicle derived from the production version, Hans-Joachim Stuck clinched the title for Ingolstadt in the brand’s debut year of 1990 straight away, owing – last not least – to the superior quattro drive. 1991 saw Frank Biela triumphant, thus making Audi the first manufacturer to manage a successful defence of the title. In the 2004 season, when Audi made its comeback to the series as a manufacturer, Mattias Ekström in the A4 DTM yet again claimed the championship straight away. The fourth DTM title on Audi’s track record was captured by Team Abt Sportsline, which had been entering the Abt-Audi TT-R from 2000 to 2003 as an Audi customer team, winning the championship with Laurent Aiello in 2002. In each of Audi’s four champion’s years the closest rival in the fight for the DTM crown was Mercedes-Benz – and in the 2006 season Germany’s two leading automobile manufacturers will again be fighting for the prestigious title.

Sportiness, advanced technology and emotive design are the basis for the success of the Audi brand. The genes for this have their origin in racing – since 1980. The dominant victories and two manufacturers’ and two drivers’ titles achieved with the “original quattro” in the World Rally Championship between 1982 and 1984 were an important factor in the market success of quattro drive. quattro victorious in circuit racing as well After Audi had turned rally racing upside down and stormed up Pikes Peak (USA) with the Sport quattro in record time on three successive occasions, Audi made quattro drive fit for circuit racing as well: initially with the Audi 200 quattro and the Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO in the United States, in 1990 and 1991 with two championship titles for the Audi V8 quattro in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) – and ultimately also with the A4 in the production- based super touring cars. In 1996, the Audi A4 quattro won championship titles in seven countries. Between 2012 and 2016, the all-wheel drive system returned to the race track as the e-tron quattro. • Six Strong Drivers – a “Dream Team”
Audi in the 2004 DTM Six strong drivers – a “dream team” The last works involvement by AUDI AG in the DTM dates back more than ten years: Between 1990 and 1992, the Audi V8 quattro had the measure of everything in the German Touring Car Championship, at that time Audi won the DTM title twice in succession. In 2002, the Audi customer team Abt Sportsline won another DTM championship for Audi with the compact Coupé based on the Audi TT. As for the works re-entry to the 2004 DTM is concerned, the target for the sporting premium marque is almost self-explanatory: “We want to fight for the title,” reads the motto of Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Sport. The basis required for this is created at Audi Sport in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm, where the DTM race version of the Audi A4 is developed. At the same time, Dr Ullrich has assembled a really high-caliber team, recruited from proven members of the successful Audi sportscar programme and DTM-experienced staff. The Audi driver line-up for the 2004 DTM is also a spectacular mix of the marque’s current sportscar and touring car drivers – forming a real “dream team”. Christian Abt (36), German Super Touring Car Champion from 1999, the former Swedish Touring Car Champion Mattias Ekström (25) and former junior Martin Tomczyk (21) already competed in the DTM for Team Abt Sportsline. The 2002 DTM championship winning team is completed by the five-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen (36). “Europe’s most demanding touring car series is a great challenge,” says the Dane.
