Hornish grabbed his third top five of the season and chopped 11 points off Elliott Sadler’s lead in the Nationwide Series championship standings. He now trails Sadler by 34 points entering next week’s event at Kentucky Speedway. Hornish led once in the race for three laps. The driver of the No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts Dodge said he had a simple strategy entering the weekend’s event at the 4.048-mile road course, a track known for chaotic racing. “We were just trying to be smart,” Hornish said. “My goal for the weekend was to make sure that we weren’t sitting in any sand traps. I’m really happy about that and to be able to pass some really good road racers there towards the end, I feel like it was pretty good. There were some guys running into each other on the last lap and I did everything I could do to try to stay out of that.” The strategy worked, despite the fact Hornish was involved in a rambunctious five-car battle for fourth-place in the closing laps featuring Max Papis, Danica Patrick, Brian Scott and his Penske Racing teammate for the weekend, Jacques Villeneuve. -

Yet that’s exactly what happened. With his simple request, the late, great Meyer – Indy’s first three-time winner – established a tradition that has become an endearing part of Indianapolis lore. For nearly 80 years – 58 of which have been consecutive – winners of the Indianapolis 500 have celebrated in Victory Lane (now Victory Circle) with a hearty swig from an ice-cold bottle of milk – a ceremony recognized around the world as unique to Indy. In an interview shortly before his death in 1995, Meyer recalled that his favorite beverage during his driving days was buttermilk – and that’s what he asked for following the second of his three wins. Three years later, on the occasion of his third 500-Mile Race victory, he was photographed drinking milk in Victory Lane. Milk was presented off and on during the next several years until, in 1956, the Bottle of Milk was made a permanent part of the post-race celebration by Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Anton “Tony” Hulman. 2013 marks the 58th consecutive year for this beloved tradition, and 77 years since the photo of Meyer and his beloved buttermilk was snapped in Victory Lane. -

F1 Debrief – Insanity personified in a circle Christine: This is F1 Debrief - Insanity personified in a circle. Coming up on this show, we bring out the big guns to talk all things Indy 500. Our last F1 Debrief show was all about Fernando Alonso’s Indy 500 adven- ture, which is now just days away - very exciting! We got quite a bit of feedback telling us we didn’t know what we were talking about, which is a fair assessment. So to rectify the situation, we’ve roped in Pat W of the I Watch Too Much Racing blog, and Lukeh, both of whom are IndyCar fans and experts and can tell us where we’re going wrong. So, hopefully from this chat we can all learn a bit more about what to expect this weekend, and I'll be taking copious notes in case this situation should ever arise again. Mr C: Pat, firstly, give us the rundown on what's going. What is Fernando Alonso doing? Pat: Well first of all, hello, it's good to be back. It's been a while. What's he doing? He says he's going for the triple crown which is the three biggest races in the world, arguably. Which is the Monaco Grand Prix, which he's won already, the Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Part of me wonders if that's what he's doing, whether that's his real motivation, or whether he just wanted to do something different because he's bored. But I think he does want to do Indy, genuinely.
