Department of Parks and Wildlife Science and Conservation Division annual research report 2013–14 DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE There has been much change since we became the Department of Parks and Wildlife in July 2013, with renewed focus on conservation of Western Australia's unique plants and animals and our world- class network of parks, reserves and natural areas. Our Strategic Directions for 2013-14 recognised that science and research play a critical role in effective management of species and ecosystems. In October 2013 the Science Division was amalgamated with the Nature Conservation Division providing new opportunities for science to more directly inform conservation policy and management, and for management requirements and knowledge gaps to set research priorities. While much of our work supports the conservation priorities of the Wildlife corporate goal, we also provide scientific research and information to support delivery of the Parks, Fire, Managed Use and People corporate goals. The combined responsibilities of the divisions are focused around two main areas of Species conservation and Landscape conservation. Our work in species conservation involves activities, such as species and community recovery, wildlife protection and licensing, understanding species biology and taxonomy, while our landscape conservation work is focused on landscape and seascape management, development advice and liaison, understanding ecosystem processes and biological survey. Information systems and monitoring and evaluation link across both species and landscape conservation activities. Across all areas, effective exchange of knowledge and information to support legislation and policy is fundamental to effective delivery of wildlife management outcomes. Partnerships have always been an important means of achieving our outcomes. -

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The Illaara Greenstone Belt is located within the Southern Cross Geological Province, extending discontinuously over 80km in a north-south direction. Previous surveys have been undertaken on the northern part of the greenstone belt. This paper describes the flora and vegetation of the southern ranges of the area. One hundred and forty five taxa, including 31 annuals and no introduced taxa were recorded from the range. One declared rare flora, Ricinocarpos brevis, and one priority taxon, Banksia arborea, were recorded. Hierarchical classification identified four floristic communities on the range. The main floristic differences occurred between communities found on laterite and banded ironstone (Communities 1 and 2) and communities occurring on a mixture of banded ironstone and mafic substrate. Significant differences were found in the soil chemistry between these substrates. Currently, the southern ranges of the Illaara Greenstone Belt occur on unallocated crown land and not within Western Australian conservation estate. Box 124, Benalla, VIC 3671, Australia; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Landscape degradation is a major threat to global biodiversity that is being further exac- erbated by climate change. Halting or reversing biodiversity decline using seed-based restoration requires tons of seed, most of which is sourced from wild populations. However, in regions where restoration is most urgent, wild seed sources are often fragmented, declining and producing seed with low genetic diversity. Seed production areas (SPAs) can help to reduce the burden of collecting native seed from remnant vegetation, improve genetic diversity in managed seed crops and contribute to species conservation. Banksia marginata (Proteaceae) is a key restoration species in south-eastern Australia but is highly fragmented and declining across much of its range. We evaluated genetic diversity, population genetic structure and relatedness in two B. marginata SPAs and the wild popula- Citation: Broadhurst, L.; Bush, D.; tions from which the SPA germplasm was sourced. The hills are the formed by the exposure of the northern Yerilgee greenstone belt, and consist of seams of banded iron formation and mafic volcanics. A total of 183 taxa (182 native) were recorded from 51 quadrats and opportunistic collections. Four taxa were of conservation significance, two of these being new records for the survey area. At least three potentially new taxa, two regional endemics and one near-endemic taxon were also located. No range-restricted endemic taxa were reported. Six floristic community types were derived from numerical classification analysis of a presence/absence dataset of perennial species. Nonparametric ANOVA found significant differences between community types in site physical and soil chemical parameters. Ordination (nonmetric multidimensional scaling) analyses indicated generally highly significant (p ≤ 0.001) correlations between floristic composition and topographic position, substrate and edaphic factors. These outcropping landforms are currently unreserved and occur on unallocated crown land and mining tenements cover the entire area. -
