Rothm. is a typical spring geophyte and has been cultivated for a long time in gardens as an ornamental bulbous plant. Bulbs are not only the storage and dor- mant organs, but also a means for the plant’s vegetative reproduction. In Poland, due to the climate, the wintering and reproduction of this plant can be a problem. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of foliar nutrition using phosphorous fertilizer and soil mulching on the formation of bulbs and content of some components in leaves and bulbs of H. hispanica. To this end, a field experiment was carried out in 2010-2012. Mulching the soil with pine bark had a beneficial effect on the weight of bulbs in the core, the average weight of one bulb and the weight, length, diameter and circumference of the largest bulb from the H. -

Guide to the Flora of the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia, Working Draft of 17 March 2004 -- LILIACEAE LILIACEAE de Jussieu 1789 (Lily Family) (also see AGAVACEAE, ALLIACEAE, ALSTROEMERIACEAE, AMARYLLIDACEAE, ASPARAGACEAE, COLCHICACEAE, HEMEROCALLIDACEAE, HOSTACEAE, HYACINTHACEAE, HYPOXIDACEAE, MELANTHIACEAE, NARTHECIACEAE, RUSCACEAE, SMILACACEAE, THEMIDACEAE, TOFIELDIACEAE) As here interpreted narrowly, the Liliaceae constitutes about 11 genera and 550 species, of the Northern Hemisphere. There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. WILLIAM HERBERT (1778–1847) SCIENTIST AND POLYMATH, AND HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO CURTIS’S BOTANICAL MAGAZINE Alison Rix ‘Hon. and Rev. W. Herbert, afterwards Dean of Manchester, in the fourth volume of the ‘Horticultural Transactions’, 1822, and in his work on the ‘Amaryllidaceae’ (1837, pp. 19, 339), declares that ‘horticultural experiments have established, beyond the possibility of refutation, that botanical species are only a higher and more permanent class of varieties’. He extends the same view to animals. The Dean believes that single species of each genus were created in an originally highly plastic condition, and that these have produced, chiefly by intercrossing, but likewise by variation, all our existing species’. [Preface to the third edition (1860) of On the Origin of Species,by Charles Darwin] The Hon. and Rev. William Herbert, often known as Dean Herbert, to whom Vol. 65 (1839) of Curtis’s Botanical Magazine was dedicated, was an exceptional polymath – a poet and classical scholar, linguist, reforming MP, clergyman – as well as amateur botanist and botanical artist. His best-known botanical work, illustrated with 48 of his own paintings, was the two volume work Amaryllidaceae, quoted above by Darwin. Although this extraordinary man counted botany as just one of his many interests, his output was prodigious; in addition to studying and breeding plants, such as Crocus, Gladiolus, Hippeastrum, Narcissus and Rhododendron, he also wrote and drew prolifically for journals such as Curtis’s Botanical Magazine and its rival publication, Edwards’s Botanical Register. In addition to Darwin, he corresponded with many other notable people, including Sir William Hooker and William Fox Talbot, and his letters paint a picture of a rather serious and industrious character. -

Improving production methods allows growers to reduce cost, improve plant quality and earn higher profits. This study involved three research areas of specialty cut flowers. I would like to thank my principle advisor Dr. John Dole for his encouragement, support, honesty and perseverance. Data on the occurrence of escaped species [Hyacinthoides hispanica (Mill.) Rothm., Othocallis amoena (L.) Trávníèek, O. siberica (Haw.) Speta, Scilla sardensis (Barr et Sugden) Speta and S. forbesii (Baker) Speta] from the Czech Republic are summarised. About 200 taxons are cul- tivated. Many plant names have their synonyms. The most often cultivated taxons are Muscari armeniacum and M. botryoides. Also M. aucheri and M. latifolium have become more popular. It is difficult to find information on growth, development and hardiness of grape hyacinths. In 2008−2009 in the Department of Ornamental Plants in West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin a collection of taxons from genus Muscari was gathered. M. arme- niacum and its cultivars: ‘Blue Spike’, ‘Cantab’, ‘Heavenly Blue’, ‘Atlantic’, ‘Blue Pearl’ and ‘Fantasy Creation’; M. aucheri and its cultivars ‘Blue Magic’, ‘Dark Eyes’, ‘Mount Hood’, ‘Sky Blue’ and ‘White Beauty’; M. azureum; M. botryoides; M. comosum; M. latifolium; M. macro- carpum; M. muscarimi; M. neglectum and M. ‘Valerie Finnis’ were collected and described in this article. It is difficult to find how many species of genus Muscari are cultivated.
