The pictures below will show you the ports, controls, and cameras that you need to familiarize yourself with, to use your Surface tablet effectively. Surface RT/2 Most of the differences between the Surface RT and the Surface 2 are on the inside but the color change of the body is the most noticeable difference between the two models. The Surface 2 is gun-metal silver. 4 | P a g e Surface Pro/Pro 2 Like the Surface RT/2 the differences between the Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2 tablets are almost entirely on the inside. The outside looks nearly identical. Going on the theory that a picture is worth a thousand words, the pictures above should answer most of the questions you may have about the hardware. If not, check the quick start guide from Microsoft we mentioned in the beginning of this e-book. Now, let’s move on to using Gestures to interact with your Surface. 5 | P a g e Gestures & Stylus Input In this section, we’ll cover how to interact with your Surface tablet using touch commands. We’ll also cover using the stylus for those of you that have a Surface Pro or Pro2 model. Using Gestures Unlike previous versions of Windows, Windows 8.x was designed assuming that most people will be using a touch screen device like a Surface. So, to accommodate touch screens, Microsoft Windows 8.x uses “gestures” to do accomplish different things on the computer. Gestures are really just simple motions you make with your finger(s) while touching the screen. While they may do different things depending on when or where you use them, there are really only 5 gestures you need to know for most things. Tap: Tapping an item is the equivalent of a left-click in previous versions of Windows. It’s done by simply tapping an item on the screen. Tap and Hold: This is the equivalent of a right-mouse click in older versions of Windows. You simply touch the item on the screen you wish to interact with and hold it. When you have held it long enough, you will be given a signal (usually a small box will appear). At that point you can let go. Pinch & Stretch: This is when you use two fingers to zoom in or out. Just put two fingers on the screen and move them closer or further away from each other to zoom in and out. Slide: Sliding is a long stroke across the screen. It can be from top or bottom, left or right. This gesture can do a lot of different things depending on when or where you use it but, most often, it’s used to scroll around the screen. Swipe: A swipe is a short stroke across the screen. Usually used to select something and is similar to a control-click in earlier versions of Windows. 6 | P a g e Using Your Stylus: Surface Pro/Pro2 Only Using the Surface Pro 2 stylus can be a bit confusing if you haven’t tried it before. In this section, we’ll go over the situations when you might want to use a stylus over touch. Here’s a list of situations where a stylus would work better than touch: Writing notes by hand. Drawing. Marking up documents. Taking signatures (like digital ink). Writing math formulas. In addition, there are a few stylus-related features that you’re going to really start to like once you get comfortable using it. Palm Blocking: The Surface Pro/Pro 2 is smart enough to know when you’re holding the stylus and it will ignore your palm resting on the screen when the stylus is near. This means that you can write/draw on the screen of the surface
