Ali Naqi For centuries the very fertile soil of 8engal has developed a number of independent styles in its deferent regions. Among them the Khan--e-Jahan style stands out with its own Identity in the southern Sunderban area. The ArcMectural out come of thiS Style In and around the Khalifatabad city, 8agerhat bears the semantic and symbolic inner structure of reasoning systems of the builder The austere ideals of a religious leader, the necessary functionality on a marshy frontier region, the Impressions of a jungle life and moreover the hostile nature of the climatic conditions ttlese are the determlnanls that defined the structure of these architectural monuments and its place in Bengal culture. The study reveals these underlying forces that constitute the Architecture of the Khan-e-Jahan Style, The style was nourished from the very conte>dualrealities that the builder has faced dunng his development endeavors, As a member of a fui! grown and independent Style these monuments are very sympathetic to its geo.dimatic context and have developed a number of unique techniques and systems to meet the situations. The Influence of Architecture of Khan--e-JahanStyle is fell far beyond the boundaries of the 8agerhat area, Masjid Bari MOSQueat Patuakhali and Hammad's Mosque at Kumira are two finest examples of such influences The most mentionable and the noblest influence of this Style is the introduction of Choucha/a roof. The Pancharatna layout of Hindu temples drew its organizational Inspiration from the matured Ionns of Khan--e-JahanStyle. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

The Terracotta Temples of Baranagar in Murshidabad, West Bengal offer a very insightful vantage point in this regard. The elaborate works of terracotta on the facades of these temples patronized by Rani Bhabani during the mid-eighteenth century possess immense narrative potential to reconstruct the history of the area in the given time period. The portrayals on various facets of society, environment, culture, religion, mythology, and space and communication systems make these temples exemplary representatives for studying narrative art. While a significant portion of the temple facades depicts gods, goddesses, and mythological stories, the on-spot study also found a substantial number of plaques observed mainly on the base friezes representing the engagement of women in various mundane activities. This study explores the narrative intentions of such portrayals. The depictions incorporated are validated with various types of archival evidence facilitating cross-corroboration of the sources.

Dakhineswar Kali temple has more than hundred year’s heritage records in West Bengal and India too. The present study is an attempt to understand how different cultural patterns and impact of various Indian historical time period embedded in an architectural style. For this paper, the data were collected through observation, interview methods. This research reveals the impact of Indo- Islamic style as a form of ‘ratna’ or towered structure, European influence as a presence of flat roof temple pattern and ‘aat- chala’ form expressing the Bengal Temple Terracotta style. Furthermore, the presence of skywalk, car parking area, specially designed security witnessing the touches of modernization through the shades of cultural heritage.     Paharpur Buddhist Monastery Somapura Mahavihara known as Paharpur Buddhist Monastery and a UNESCO World Heritage site built during the Pala dynasty in 7th century is considered as a base of Buddhism in this part of the world. It is believed that Lord Buddha spent some time here and preached the people. The scholars opine that this was a university at that time. Kantanagar Temple, commonly known as Kantaji Temple or Kantajew Temple at Kantanagar; about 20 km north of Dinajpur District headquarters and about 1 km west of Dinajpur-Tetulia highway; is a late-medieval Hindu Temple. The Kantajew Temple is one of the most Krishna and his wife Rukmini and built by Maharaja Pran Nath (1704) and his son Raja Ramnath (1722). The temple was built in following navaratna (nine-spired) style before the destruction caused by the earthquake of 1897. It boasts one of the greatest examples on terracotta architecture in Bangladesh. Every inch of the temple is plagued with wonderful terracotta. The visitors are just spell-bound to see the walls of the temple. Uttara Gonobhaban was known as Estate Rajbari during the British and Pakistan Periods. It was the palace of the Maharajas of Dighapatia. Mahasthangarh is the oldest citadel and an archaeological site, you will be glad to know that once it was the ancient capital of the Pundra Kingdom. This archaeological site of 3rd century BC, is still held to be of great sanctity by the Buddhist, Hindus and Muslims. A visit to Mahasthangarh will open up for you a wide variety of antiquities, ranging from terracotta objects to gold ornaments and coins recovered from the site, which is preserved in a nicely decorated site museum.

Present paper speaks about the aesthetic values of these monuments. In addition, present work has tried to bridge a temporal gap between past and present social cognition as reflected in the making of these monuments of Birbhum. The paper shows past life‐ways carried remarkable influence and inspiration to the artists and architects of studied monuments. Astonishingly, yet, it is only in Bengal and a few places in Jharkhand that this craft was used to decorate temples, mosques and other places of worship. In Bengal, artisans opted for terracotta tiles or plaques mainly due to the non‐availability of stone and for its easy usage. Bengal province (modern Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal) saw a remarkable surge in patronage and experimentation in art and architecture in the form of terracotta brick temple, from the mid‐17th to the mid‐19th century.

While 'The Mosque City of Bagerhat' is declared by UNESCO as 'world heritage' it is a subject to the issue of 'Climate Change' due to its increased salinity and sea level rise is under threat as well. Keeping these 'world heritage' and 'climate change' issues in focus, during the five day visit from October 15 to October20, 2012 students have studied the spatial arrangement, socio-economical features, heritage as well as the environmental issues by rigorous field studies. Discussions were arranged with city mayor and many other responsible persons regarding the issues of the city's history, present status and future development. Learners have documented the city through mapping and analyzing the findings. Consequently they are preparing strategic designs for Bagerhat city with a vision of development for future. There are some barriers which can impede successful heritage tourism marketing in Bangladesh. Lack of coordination among stakeholders, insufficient funding and providing less importance to the needs of the tourists can obstruct successful heritage tourism marketing. Developing creative promotional program, coordination among relevant stakeholders, conservation and protection of heritage sites and active participation of both private and public sector are necessary to implement heritage tourism marketing in Bangladesh. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Three major developments in religious architecture were seen in three different eras of Bengal’s history – evolution of Nagara style temples which were influenced by the Orissan Rekha deuls, followed by the developments of Islamic Architecture through mosques and tombs, and lastly, the generation of Terracotta Temples. The Terracotta Temples of Bengal, famous for the use of Terracotta Plaques for surface decoration, had developed a unique style of architecture, quite distinct from the major styles of temple architecture that was prevailing in India. This paper intends to find out which architectural features of the Terracotta Temples got influenced and how they got influenced from the prevailing architectural styles.
