The Old Town of Salzburg was granted the distinction “World Cultural Heritage” in 1996 by the UNESCO. Religious and secular buildings from various centuries on both sides of the Salzach, framed by the cities mountains constitute the unique World Heritage ensemble, amongst them up to thousand buildings with their history from the medieval times to this day. Surprising stories hide behind their facade, which show tradition is alive and has always been in motion. Our cultural heritage is also part of our present and treating it with care is important to us. I invite you cordially to experience the Salzburg World Heritage today and discover the “stories behind the story”. Benedict's Dharma 2 A Benedictine Experience - A Buddhist/Christian Dialogue www.BenedictsDharma2.org First Edition - December 2003 Free Distribution Only © 2003, 2004 Kate Andrews - Rev. Kusala Bhikshu - Sister Mary Margaret Funk Benedict's Dharma 2... Forty Episcopalian men and women from around the country gathered for this very special "Benedictine Experience" inspired by the book, "Benedict's Dharma," in historic New Harmony, Indiana. Join Sister Mary Margaret Funk, OSB, executive director of MID (Monastic Inter-religious Dialogue), Kusala Bhikshu a Buddhist monk, and Mr. Karl Peterson a specialist in early Christian music as they guide participants through a week-long Benedictine Experience. In Benedict's Dharma the book, a Zen priest Norman Fisher, meditation teacher Joseph Goldstein, professor Judith Simmer-Brown, and Yifa, a nun of the Chinese Buddhist tradition, flesh out The Rule of Saint Benedict, which has guided the organization and daily life of the Western Christian monastic tradition since the ninth century. Time after time, these Buddhists find in The Rule of Saint Benedict, which is included in its entirety, points that resonate with the their own experiences--points such as an emphasis on reverence, a pragmatic mindset, and the need for hard work and practice. Sister Meg and Rev. Kusala went through Benedict's Dharma chapter by chapter during this week long experience, adding their own Buddhist/Christian perspective. • The Sound of Music” (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Julia Hirsch (Guest Post)*
“The Sound of Music” (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Julia Hirsch (guest post)* “The Sound of Music” (1965) “The Sound of Music” remains one of the most popular American movies of all time and its musical compositions have become an iconic part of our American culture. The story of “Music’s” heroine, Maria von Trapp, has had many iterations. First, of course, was the real life of a spirited, rebellious and deeply complicated woman named Maria von Trapp. Orphaned at a young age, Maria became the ward of an abusive uncle where she rebelled by joining the Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg, Austria. Maria’s athletic free spirit, however, didn’t mix with a staid traditional convent in which the nuns hadn’t looked out a window in 50 years! As a diversion, Maria was sent to the home of retired naval captain, Georg von Trapp, to be governess to his bedridden daughter. Soon Maria and the Captain fell in love and married. Maria became mother to his seven children, and she and the Captain had three more children of their own and, discovering that the family naturally harmonized together, Maria convinced them all to compete in singing festivals around Salzburg and Europe where they became well known as the “Trapp Family Singers.” Then Hitler invaded Austria, and the Captain was ordered to return to naval service. Unable to work under the Third Reich, the Captain and Maria, with their ten children in tow (one in utero), escaped Austria and eventually moved to America where they continued their singing career.

Lisle Benedictine Women Vol. 38 No. 1 Sacred Heart Monastery June 2015 The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament proclaims God’s handiwork. Ps. 19, 1 Message from the Prioress... What is your story? What events in your life brought you to where you are now? What did you learn from various parts of your story? We have just completed the Easter Season where we have been reenergized by the stories of the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus and his encounters with many of His disciples. They also have their stories. Here at Sacred Heart Monastery we have been telling our stories. As you may well be aware, we have been having a “Tuesday Night with the Sisters” during this Year of Consecrated Life. These evenings have been prepared by our Vocation Advisory Council which consists of three Benedictine Sisters and three lay women. In January, we viewed and discussed a documentary film entitled God is the Bigger Elvis. It is the story of actress Dolores Hart “retreating” at Regina Laudis Abbey in Connecticut for a rest from her busy, stress filled acting life. Ultimately, despite a successful career of acting and while being engaged, this Come and See experience led her to enter that cloistered community. Mother Dolores Hart and the sisters in her community shared their stories. Viewing the movie and reflecting on my story, I again realized the importance of a Come and See experience. Coming from my home town in Colorado to visit the Benedictine Sisters at Sacred Heart in Lisle convinced me of my vocation.

  • Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination
Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination INTRODUCTION Catholics live in an enchanted world, a world of statues and holy water, stained glass and votive candles, saints and religious medals, rosary beads and holy pictures. But these Catholic paraphernalia are mere hints of a deeper and more pervasive religious sensibility that inclines Catholics to see the Holy lurking in creation. —Andrew Greeley, The Catholic Imagination (2000) “Heavenly Bodies” features the work of designers who for the most part were raised in the Roman Catholic tradition. While their current relationships to Catholicism vary, most acknowledge its enduring influence on their imaginations. On the surface, this influence is expressed through explicit Catholic imagery and symbolism as well as references to specific garments worn by the clergy and religious orders. On a deeper level, it manifests as a reliance on storytelling, and specifically on metaphor—which the sociologist Andrew Greeley describes as the essential characteristic of a particular sensibility he defines as “the Catholic imagination.” This exhibition explores how the Catholic imagination has shaped the creativity of designers and how it is conveyed through their narrative impulses. These impulses are reflected in the organization of the exhibition, which unfolds as a series of short stories told through conversations between religious artworks in The Met collection and fashions of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The Catholic imagination also operates on an experiential level, and, accordingly, the show’s configuration evokes the concept and practice of a pilgrimage. The journey begins at The Met Fifth Avenue in the Byzantine and medieval art galleries and continues in the Anna Wintour Costume Center.
