Ferenczi’s Influence on Contemporary Psychoanalytic Traditions This collection covers the great variety topics relevant for understanding the importance of Sándor Ferenczi and his influence on contemporary psychoanalysis. Pre-eminent Ferenczi scholars were solicited to contribute succinct reviews of their fields of expertise. The book is divided in five sections. ‘The historico-biographical’ describes Ferenczi’s childhood and student days, his marriage, brief analyses with Freud, his correspondences and contributions to the daily press in Budapest, exploration of his patients’ true identities, and a paper about his untimely death. ‘The development of Ferenczi’s ideas’ reviews his ideas before his first encounter with psychoanalysis, his relationship with peers, friendship with Groddeck, emancipation from Freud, and review of the importance of his Clinical Diary. The third section reviews Ferenczi’s clinical concepts and work: trauma, unwelcome child, wise baby, identification with aggressor, mutual analysis, and many others. In ‘Echoes’, we follow traces of Ferenczi’s influence on virtually all traditions in contemporary psychoanalysis: interpersonal, independent, Kleinian, Lacanian, relational, etc. Finally, there are seven ‘application’ chapters about Ferenczi’s ideas and the issues of politics, gender and development. Aleksandar Dimitrijević, PhD, is interim professor of psychoanalysis and clinical psychology at the International Psychoanalytic University, Berlin, Germany. He is a member of the Belgrade Psychoanalytical Society (IPA) and Faculty at the Serbian Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists (EFPP), and the editor or co-editor of ten books or special journal issues, as well as author of many conceptual and empirical papers, about attachment theory and research, psychoanalytic education, psychoanalysis and the arts. We understand that every person leaves a unique legacy and that the greatest tribute is not grief but gratitude for a life well lived. We are privileged to have been entrusted by so many families over the years. This Distinguished Residents Book features the biographies and photos of some of those individuals whose legacies have impacted our lives 2 and helped to shape our culture and our community. It has been created to honor their memory and to inspire generations by their extraordinary accomplishments, tenacity and philanthropy. There are stars whose brightness is visible on earth although they have long burned out. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world though they are no longer among the living. • Oral History the Life and Work of Robert S. Wallerstein: a Conversation
Luca Di Donna 617 LUCA DI DONNA Oral History The Life and Work of Robert S. Wallerstein: A Conversation Luca Di Donna Dr. Wallerstein, in speaking with Virginia Hunter (2007), you said that you had come to the United States with your fa- ther from Germany at a very young age. Can you tell me about that period in your life? Robert S. Wallerstein Well, I was a two-year-old when I came to America. I was born in 1921, during the terrible post-World War I period when inflation destroyed Germany economically for several years. My father was a resident in medicine at the Charité Krankenhaus in Berlin and had intended to stay in Germany, but his money was wiped out by the inflation. He had two possibilities for work: to go to Persia and become the court physician to the governor of one of the provinces (who had been a patient of his in the army) and his family, who were related to the Shah, which he declined because of travel difficulties—a several-day camel ride from Tehran to the provincial capital, which my fa- ther deemed too arduous for his wife and one-year-old son—or to try to come to the United States. He decided to answer a New York Times newspaper ad for a physician’s assistant in gastroenterology; and once hired, he moved to New York. Within a year, he had saved enough money to bring me and my mother to join him. Of course, German was my language at that time (I was two years old), and I con- tinued to speak German at home until I entered kindergarten.
