The original name persisted long after 1506, when Alexander, the third Earl of Huntly, was A b granted a charter changing the name of his e r d castle (subsequently Huntly Castle) and his e e surrounding lands. The origins of Huntly n probably date back to a settlement serving the R original castle, the Peel of Strathbogie, built in o a the 1180s. The major change, however, came d in 1769, when the Duke of Gordon established a planned town here. With the new building and Old Toll Road new plan came acceptance of a new name, and "Huntly" finally replaced Milton of Strathbogie on the maps.
