Local Planning Authority: Waveney District Council National Grid reference: TM 521828 Area: 735.33ha Ordnance Survey Sheet: 156 1:10,000: TM57 NW, TM 58NW, TM 58 SW Previous Notification Date: 7 September Notification Date: 8 December (under 1981 Act) 1989 2005 Reasons for Notification: Pakefield to Easton Bavents is nationally important for the geological exposures of the Lower Pleistocene Norwich Crag Formations and associated Pleistocene vertebrate assemblages, and the coastal geomorphology of Benacre Ness. The site is also nationally important for its vegetated shingle features, saline lagoons, flood-plain fens, an assemblage of nationally rare and nationally scarce vascular plants, scarce breeding birds, four breeding bird assemblages in four different habitats and wintering bitterns Botaurus stellaris. General description: Geology The two low cliffs between Easton Broad and Southwold provide excellent exposures of the three major elements of the Norwich Crag Formation; the Crag itself (Chillesford Church Member), the Baventian Clay (Easton Bavents Member) and the Westleton Beds (Westleton Member).     Repair and Maintenance Corton to Lowestoft Ness This section of coastline covers Hopton, Corton, Gunton and Lowestoft North Denes and has a combination of No Active Intervention and Hold the Line in the short term (2025) SMP policy (See our SMP page for more information). Hopton The regular inspections carried out along the Hopton frontage cover the following assets, along with their associated access points, signage and guardrailing: Hopton concrete seawall (restricted access, closures are inspected regularly) Broadland Sands timber revetment (restricted access, closure is inspected regularly) Hopton timber “A” and “B” groynes Access is restricted to the southern end seawall due to its collapse. The closure in place at the northern end is inspected regularly, while the original southern closure is now no longer accessible due to erosion of the access ramp at Broadland Sands. The top of this ramp is also closed off and signage has been erected to inform the public of this. SMP policy unit for this stretch of coastline is 6.21 of SMP 6 Kelling to Lowestoft Ness. It is a pleasure to follow the Author's skilful handling of his smack-converted-yacht Irene, in which he not only skirts our Coast but penetrates up rivers and into inlets and broads, where to enjoya trip, not onlyskillis required, but considerablejudgment and knowledgeof tides, winds, foreshore,and many inconsequent happenings is also necessary. Our Coast is quite prepared to supply the occupants of small craft with every phase of emotionbetween the extremes of blissful enjoyment and abject misery. The Author is singularlyhappy in escapingthose many mishaps whichfallto the lot oflessskilfuladventurers,for it is no uncommon experienceto be caught by the ebb on a mud bank up a Creek, the boat badly careenedand only onepair of Poits aboard to convey the crew ashore. The problem of transporting the goat, the cabbage and wolf is child's play in comparison. No lesshappy and freefrommishapsare the Authors' allusionsto the history of our Coast, and in this respect he evidencesa much more than superficialstudy of Suffolk'sgeographicaland historical evolution, and Suffolk archxologists will find in this book much antiquarian lore that only a student of coastalmatters couldsupply. The book is remarbably comprehensive,for.within its 254 pp. are contained 8 illustrations in monochrome,100in line, together with two sea charts of our Coast from Yarmouth to Harwich and the invaluable adjunct of an Index.

It makes free-standing statutory proposals for this part of the stretch, and seeks approval for them by the Secretary of State in their own right under section 52 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. 5.1.3 The report explains how we propose to implement the England Coast Path (“the trail”) on this part of the stretch, and details the likely consequences in terms of the wider ‘Coastal Margin’ that will be created if our proposals are approved by the Secretary of State. Our report also sets out: any proposals we think are necessary for restricting or excluding coastal access rights to address particular issues, in line with the powers in the legislation; and any proposed powers for the trail to be capable of being relocated on particular sections (“roll- back”), if this proves necessary in the future because of coastal change.
