Dear Acton Residents,

On July 1st I started my new role as Town Manager of Acton and I have enjoyed getting to know this wonderful community. I had the opportunity to meet many of you at the annual July 4th celebration at NARA Park where more than ten thousand people gathered for fun family activities, music, and a beautiful fi reworks display.

I’m proud to serve the Town of Acton with its great schools, parks and recreational facilities, conservation lands, well-maintained roadways and safe neighborhoods. Acton’s small-town appeal and charm, along with strong historic roots, make this one of the best locations in America to live and to work.

The Recreation Department provides countless opportunities for fun throughout the year with classes, trips, and programs listed in this booklet and concerts and events at NARA Park. The Conservation Department maintains the great outdoors with diverse trails and the beautiful Acton Arboretum. In Acton there are two rail trails, the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail and the Assabet River Rail Trail that provide miles of open space for cycling and other recreational activities. There are museums, cultural institutions, and a brand new senior center for our residents to enjoy. The Acton Memorial Library is a wonderful resource next door to Town Hall, where you can fi nd my offi ce.

Whether you are looking for a place to visit or to build a business, know that you are welcome in Acton! I look forward to meeting you.

Cordially, John S. Mangiaratti

Dear Acton Community,

As summer comes to a close and fall begins, I am writing to introduce the upcoming fall and winter season programs and events offered by Acton Recreation. We’re en- thusiastic about expanded opportunities to have community events at the Recreation Center at 50 Audubon Dr. We are located in South Acton off High Street, just down the road from Erickson’s Grain Mill and opposite Faulkner Hill Rd. We have been hosting entertainment at NARA for many years and we are now bring- ing many of our favorite performers to the Recreation Center. Join us this fall and win- ter for concerts, marionette performances and workshops, and children’s performers. Even Monsterbash comes to the Rec Center this October!

There are many new classes for all ages, and more will be coming online, so keep up-to-date by signing up for our E-News. Email [email protected] and ask to be added. We won’t inundate your inbox and you may unsubscribe at any time. You can review our programs and register by visiting ACTONREC.COM. We’re a friendly offi ce and we also welcome you to stop by and visit us! We can answer your ques- tions by calling us at 978-929-6640, dial 0 to speak to our staff.

We welcome your feedback about Recreation programs and events. Feel free to call me at the Recreation Department, 978-929-6640 or email me at recreation@acton- ma.gov .

Ping Pong (aka Table Tennis) is a good mental and physical exercise for different age groups, and the benefi t can last a life time. For young players, it can improve their coordination of eyes, hands, and the entire body, and enhance their capabilities for concentration and competition. Ping Pong is fun and safe to play, either indoors or outdoors; It’s also a wonderful game to play among family members and friends, especially during the long, harsh winter. The class will provide new or experienced students with basic knowledge about the sport, as well as rules and regulations for single and double games. All students will learn several basic skills of serving and returning the ball. Then students will be divided into two groups most suitable for their skill levels (beginner, advanced). They will learn and practice some playing tactics such as driving, pushing, blocking, attacking and looping.

Instructor Hongsheng Liu was born in 1957 and has 46 years experience of PingPong. He was profession player at 12 years old and coached about 25 years. He has taught children and adult pingpong classes at ACLS for more than 10 years.

Each student needs to bring his/ her own Ping Pong paddle. The aim of the game of Foot Darts is playing the same rules as a dart game but instead of throwing a dart, you kick a football at a giant velcro infl atable soccer dart-board. The air-infl ated dart- board is covered with Velcro; players will then aim the softballs at the board. The sport is then scored the same as normal darts, or you could decide to take part for fun and not keep score. By merg- ing two games together, this sport targets lovers of both activities and brings them together to perform a really entertaining activity. BOSTON PAINTBALL: Splatmaster Ages 8+ and Low Impact & Traditional Paintball for Players Ages 10+. Low Impact is a new option for players that might be too old for Splatmaster or not quite ready for the traditional version. Traditional paintball is the favorite for kids ages 10+. Please dress you child in long sleeves, long pants and sneakers. A couple of layers may also be benefi cial (more padding). If you have knee pads / ski hat / baseball hat/ gloves you may want to have your child bring them as well (the whole “padding” thing!). The paint does wash out, but you may want to wear something you do not mind getting dirty. Boston Paintball has jumpsuits available to rent or purchase but they are based on adult sizes and may be big on some smaller players. You may want to bring a change of clothing to go home in (the person who owns the car you came in might appreciate this!). Boston Paintball does not rent gloves, supporters, hats or bandanas but hey do carry many of these products in their pro-shop. Leave home anything of value - or plan on having a place to leave these things (wallets/purses/cell phones) in van/bus or with a spectator. There are lockers on site that you may use for free and they do sell locks for them that you get to keep. Participation requires signed waiver by parent or legal guardian.

Long before computers & printed manuscripts, scribes carefully hand painted books. Today, Calligraphy is considered an art form; Illumination is the decoration & story surrounding letters. In this class, students will learn to use a calligraphy pen, create an alphabet & then “illuminate”/ decorate letters with colored pencils & markers. We work in a very relaxed atmosphere, so if you love to create art, please come! Veteran artists as well as newly minted artists are always welcome. Supply list available upon registration. Benefi ts of Pilates: It's Ah-Mazing for Your Abs

Pilates hits your core (or, in Pilates speak, your "powerhouse") unlike any other workout. In fact, after completing 36 weeks of Pilates training, women strengthened their rectus abdominis (the muscle responsible for six- packs) by an average of 21 percent, while eliminating muscle imbalances between the right and left sides of their cores, according to a Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise study. Peel the layers of stress away and support healing by experiencing the medicine of the forest on this Forest Therapy walk with Certifi ed Forest Therapy Guide, Nadine Mazzola. Shinrin Yoku is a term that means “taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing.” It is unlike any nature walk you have experienced before. We focus on our senses to develop an immediate connection with the forest. This is a very relaxed, slow, and mindful way of walking that has many proven health benefi ts. It’s fun, easy and relaxing! We’ll do a series of invitations (activities) to engage our senses, hone intuition and connect with the natural world around us. Over time we have started to lose our connection with nature as more technology creeps into our lives. Wash away some of the technology induced stress of modern life and reconnect to nature. The walk will still be on if it’s raining, unless it is a really big downpour or violent storm. If it is raining it’s important to have a waterproof shell including pants, and many people bring umbrellas also. Rain often enhances sensory experience and makes for some of our most memorable walks. WHAT TO BRING? Please bring a snack or light lunch and water bottle, or if the day is cold you might want to consider bringing a thermos with a hot drink. Wear comfortable clothing and good shoes for walking on easy trails & sunscreen/hat. If the weather is cool you should also dress to stay warm! I suggest you bring one more layer than you think you will need. We will be moving at a leisurely pace and in the shade so temperatures may be cooler than you expect. Your dog will even be your guide! Hate to leave your dog behind? Me too, so I’ve developed my own way of bringing these two things together combining my experience as a Certifi ed Forest Therapy Guide and a dog owner. Spending time in nature with my dog and Shinrin Yoku are two of my favorite things to do. Using our senses to slow down and bring us to the present moment is the way of a Shinrin Yoku walk. So often our walks can be something we have to get done, rushed or full of conversation on our phones. Instead, learn how to make part of your walk a time to slow down, connect and release the stress in the Shinrin Yoku way. Even make it part of a mindfulness practice. Yes, even with your dog! If possible, please walk your dog before class. No aggressive dogs or dogs in heat are permitted. We reserve the right to remove any dogs thought to be dangerous to other dogs or participants. Materials Needed - For your Dog: Bring an extra-long leash or two leashes you can clip together. My preference is to use a 20-foot training lead. I will have extras if you’d like to try one out.
