    PRESENTER PROFILES RABBI KENNETH BRANDER Rabbi Kenneth Brander is Vice President for University and Community Life at Yeshiva University. He served as the inaugural David Mitzner Dean of Yeshiva University Center for the Jewish Future. Prior to his work at Yeshiva University, Rabbi Brander served for 14 years as the Senior Rabbi of the Boca Raton Synagogue. He oversaw its explosive growth from 60 families to over 600 families. While Senior Rabbi of the Boca Raton Synagogue (BRS), he became the founding dean of The Weinbaum Yeshiva High School, founding dean of the Boca Raton Judaic Fellows Program – Community Kollel and founder and posek of the Boca Raton Community Mikvah. He helped to develop the Hahn Judaic Campus on which all these institutions reside and as co-chair of Kashrut organization of the Orthodox Rabbinical Board of Broward & Palm Beach Counties (ORB). Rabbi Brander also served for five years as a Member of the Executive Board of the South Palm Beach County Jewish Federation, as a Board member of Jewish Family Services of South Palm Beach County, and actively worked with other lay leaders in the development of the Hillel Day School. Rabbi Brander is a 1984 alumnus of Yeshiva College and received his ordination from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary in 1986. During that time he served as a student assistant to the esteemed Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik. He also received an additional ordination from Rav Menachem Burstein the founder and dean of Machon Puah and from the Chief Rabbi, Mordechai Eliyahu, in the field of Jewish Law and Bioethics with a focus on reproductive technology, He is currently a PhD candidate (ABD) in general philosophy at Florida Atlantic University (FAU).

    A Training Ground For Tomorrow's Rabbinic Leadership: Eretz Hemdah Celebrates 20 Years By: Shlomo Greenwald, Jewish Press Staff Reporter Wednesday, August 29, 2007 Twenty years ago this September, Rabbi Yosef Carmel and Rabbi Moshe Ehrenreich approached Rabbi Shaul Yisraeli, a longtime member of the Supreme Rabbinical Court and rosh yeshiva of the religious Zionist flagship Yeshivat Mercaz Harav, about starting Eretz Hemdah. Rabbi Yisraeli agreed and became president of the institute. “And he said that from this moment your time is my time,” Rabbi Carmel said. Today Eretz Hemdah is the only religious Zionist institute for Torah studies for post-semicha students – that is, students who had already received the first level semicha called yoreh yoreh before entering. Eretz Hemdah is a seven-year program, during which time students take tests to receive a higher-level semicha called yadin yadin. The tests and ultimate semicha are administered by the chief rabbinate of Israel. “The program is much wider,” said Rabbi Carmel during a recent interview with The Jewish Press. “It’s really to be the next generation of gedolei Torah. One of the ways to climb up on top of the hill is take this examination of yadin yadin, which is one of the most difficult examinations in Israel from the chief rabbinate of Israel.” In order to foster the next generation of Torah leaders, Eretz Hemdah’s program is intensive, with the young student rabbis dedicating 12 hours each day to Torah study. And the hours pay off. While the national average of passing all the yadin yadin tests is approximately 50 percent, Eretz Hemdah students have been averaging around 90 percent.

    YESHIVA UNIVERSITY ALUMNITODAYSPRING 2013 Nick Muzin ’97YC, ’01E: Doctor, Lawyer, Political Strategist “Tim and I are aligned on the policy issues that are most important to us—Israel, health care and tax reform,” said Muzin. “He is a good friend, and we trust each other, something that is difficult to find in Washington.” But being an Orthodox Jew on the Hill is not easy. “Of all the jobs I’ve had, politics is the one in which it is most challenging to be frum [Orthodox],” said Muzin. “Saturday is the busiest day of the week for campaign activities, and Friday night votes in Congress are not unusual. In addition, much of the culture and lifestyle on Capitol Hill—which idolizes power—is antithetical to a Torah perspective.” As an evangelical Christian, Scott has great respect for Judaism, mak- ing sure Muzin gets out of the office in time for Shabbat and that he has kosher food to eat when they travel. “He even makes sure I keep up with Daf Yomi, asking me after a particularly long day on the campaign trail, ‘Did you read your page today?’” For Muzin, the sacrifices are worthwhile, because politics offers an unmatched opportunity to do good—whether it’s for individuals who need help with the federal gov- ernment or in advancing policies that strengthen I have a lot of hakaras America.     Inspiration in This Time of Turmoil: The Yamim Noraim in the Shadow of COVID-19 ur pre-COVID-19 lives, as well as Rosh Hashanah of the past year, 5780, seems so distant O from our current reality. The pandemic has taken a significant physical as well as spiritual toll on our families, community and society. Our synagogues have been more-or-less closed. Even upon being re-opened, they have been restricted to small numbers of worshipers. During the upcoming Yamim Noraim, we are likely to pray in unfamiliar settings such as small, makeshift services or alone at home. In general, our ability to come together as a community has been significantly limited, leaving us feeling more isolated than ever. All of this leaves us with difficult questions and anxieties that we will carry into the High Holidays. What will the year 5781 bring to us, our families and society in general? We are hopeful that amidst this fog of doubt and apprehension, this collection of essays will help create some spiritual comfort and clarity. In this digital, printable booklet, entitled “Inspiration in This Time of Turmoil: The Yamim Noraim in the Shadow of COVID-19,” scholars and educators from among Ohr Torah Stone’s 27 institutions have prepared thought pieces with a special emphasis on this year’s unique experience.
