A. Y.*, Falusi, O. A., Dangana, M. C., Abubakar, A., Yahaya, S. A. and Abejide, D. R. Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, Nigeria. Received 1 November, 2014; Accepted 3 February, 2015 In order to assess the genetic diversity of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) in Nigeria, a survey was undertaken to collect the germplasm of the crop. The survey cut across 56 towns and 20 villages in 17 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Sixty three (63) farmers were interviewed and 60 accessions of Roselle were collected from them. Results showed that 41.7% of these accessions were having green calyx, while 31.7% were with red calyx. On the other hand, 20.0% of the accessions possessed deep red calyx while only 6.7% have light red and pink calyx. Collections from the North Central, North Eastern, North Western and South Western parts were replicated over states, towns and villages. The highest number of Roselle accessions was collected from Kaduna State (8 accessions) followed by Niger State (6 accessions); Jigawa State (6 accessions) while FCT and Bauchi State have 4 accessions each. This is an indication that these areas have the greatest diversity of the crop genetic resources in Nigeria and the states might be secondary centre of origin of the crop. -

Abstract Over the last few decades, health evidence has been building for hibiscus tea (Hibiscus sabdariffa L. Malvaceae). Previous reviews show promise in relation to reducing cardiovascular risk factors, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia, but broader health perspectives have not been widely considered. Therefore, a scoping review was undertaken to examine the overall health effects of hibiscus tea. A PubMed search was undertaken for meta- analysis (MA) and systematic review papers, human randomised controlled trials (RCT) and laboratory publications investigating inter-relationships between hibiscus tea and health. Twenty-two publications were identified (four systematic/MA papers, nine human RCT controlled trials and nine laboratory publications).Strongest evidence exists in relation to cardiovascular disease, suggesting that drinking 2-3 cups daily (each ≈ 240-250 mL) may improve blood pressure and potentially serve as a preventative or adjunctive therapy against such conditions. -

Big Springs Road, Riverside, CA 92507, USA Abstract Global constraints on fresh water supplies and the need to dispose of agricultural, municipal, and industrial waste waters have intensified interest in water reuse options. In many instances, the value of the water is decreased solely because of its higher salt concentration. Although quantitative information on crop salt tolerance exists for over 130 crop species, there are many vegetables which lack definitive data. Vegetable crops are defined as herbaceous species grown for human consumption in which the edible portions consist of leaves, roots, hypocotyls, stems, petioles, and flower buds. The salt tolerance of vegetable species is important because the cash value of vegetables is usually high compared to field crops. In this review some general information is presented on how salinity affects plant growth and development and how different measurements of salinity in solution cultures, sand cultures, and field studies can be reconciled to a common basis. The salt tolerance of vegetables has been condensed and reported in a uniform format based on the best available data. Discrepancies and inconsistencies exist in some of the information due to differences in cultivars, environments, and experimental conditions. For a great number of species little or no useful information exists and there is an obvious need for research. Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Gamma ray irradiation is one of way to improve the plant genetic diversity. Seeds of Rosellindo 2 variety was treated with 150, 300, 450 and 600 Gy doses of gamma-rays to study morphological variations. The result showed that population of 150, 300, 450 and 600 Gy gave different appearance at plant height, canopy diameter, number of productive branches per plant, fruit calyx weight per plant, and age of harvesting. Overall, gamma irradiation can be effectively increased genetic diversity of roselle. Keywords: genetic diversity, morphological characters, Rosellindo 2 variety INTRODUCTION Roselle is more widely known as the flower that can be used as raw material for the manufacture of herbal tea in Indonesia. Red roselle has benefits to overcome the various of disease and health problems as a medicinal plant. 96% ethanol extract of roselle flower petals contain flavonoid compounds, saponins and alkaloids. (Puspitowati et al., 2012). Roselle have low genetic diversity, because its self-pollinating plant so it needs to be an effort to increase the genetic diversity of plants (Osman et al., 2011). -

Seven compounds were isolated and identified, as daucosterol (1), rutin (2), isoquercetrin (3), kaempferol (4), quercetin (5), caffeic (6) and neochlorogenic (7) acids, based on their spectral data. This El-Askary HI is the first report on the isolation of these compounds from Hibiscus sabdariffa L. leaves, except for Pharmacognosy Department, rutin. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were estimated as 120.13 ± 0.27 μg GAE and 72.33 ± Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo 0.061μg QE /mg DEE, respectively using spectrophotometric methods. HPLC fingerprint analysis of University, Kasr el Aini St., DEE and its ethyl acetate fraction was carried out. ML hydrolysate was analyzed using HPLC. DEE (50 Cairo, Egypt μg/ml) possessed significant stimulatory effect on lymphocytes using MTT assay, while ML revealed inhibitory proliferative effects at different concentrations (10, 20, 50 μg/ml). -

Add more syrup if a sweeter drink is preferred. Place 1 hibiscus flower into 2 glasses; spoon 1 Tablespoon syrup into each glass. Add lemon lime soda or sparkling water to fill the glass. Garnish with blueberries, mint leaves and top each glass with sugar crystal glazed green apple slices.
