With a 10-4 rout of the Reds at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals surpassed their season run total in one afternoon and gave Michael Wacha more than sufficient support in his season debut. Diaz deposited Arroyo's fourth pitch of the game into the left-field seats to give the Cardinals an early lead, and, three innings later, put the Cardinals ahead by five with a three-run drive to nearly the same spot. "Somebody had to get it going, and he just decided to do it twice," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, whose club had been shut out on two hits a night earlier. "And then you saw it continue." Arroyo, who became the first Reds pitcher to start a game at age 40 since 1945, allowed six runs on six hits over four innings. However, just getting back on the mound was an achievement. Saturday's start marked Arroyo's first Major League appearance since June 2014. "It was a battle. It was a grind, man," Arroyo said. It's one of five blockbuster trades that make sense, according to sportsonearth.com's Anthony Castrovince. From Castrovince: Neither of these clubs has the financial flexibility to be a major player in free agency, so here's a way for each of them to significantly address a pressing need in the trading game. Granted, I don't actually expect the Reds to move their ace in advance of a season in which they expect to contend. Walt Jocketty has made it pretty clear that's not his intent at all. Nor am I convinced John Hart will move his cleanup hitter, though he hinted this week that this is a stronger possibility than those rumors of him moving Evan Gattis. What I do know is that both Upton and Cueto are eligible for free agency next winter, and the odds of either remaining with his current club beyond 2015 seem slim, given the other contractual commitments their clubs have made. If either is to be moved, the best option might be to move them for pieces of immediate impact. The Reds need a productive left fielder who can get on base -- preferably in a short-term situation, before prospect Jesse Winker arrives (as soon as 2016). Upton runs notoriously hot and cold, but he's averaged 24 homers with a .357 OBP the last six seasons. He'd instantly augment and balance the heart of a lineup in which Joey Votto's knee woes and Jay Bruce's disappointing '14 are big concerns moving forward.

    MLB.COM Improved NL Central poses challenge to retooled Reds Cincinnati has addressed shortcomings, but so have division foes January 16, 2013, 2:41 PM ET By Mark Sheldon CINCINNATI -- Not content with exiting the postseason as early as they did in 2012, the Reds made the effort this winter to fill holes and make upgrades. Theoretically, the additions should have the Reds improved and poised to repeat as National League Central champions. But of course, it's rarely that easy. Many of Cincinnati's rivals have been busy, too. "I still think the division will be tough," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. "We have to stay healthy and play like we have been playing." While finishing 97-65 and winning the division by nine games over the Cardinals, the Reds were bounced in five games by the Giants as some of their weaknesses were exposed. Cincinnati lacked a true leadoff hitter, another dominant-type starter for the rotation and help on the bench. In their biggest move of the offseason, the Reds found their leadoff hitter by working a three-way trade that acquired outfielder Shin-Soo Choo from the Indians. It cost them no pitching but sent underperforming center fielder Drew Stubbs to Cleveland and shortstop prospect Didi Gregorius to Arizona. Reds leadoff hitters combined for a .254 on-base percentage in 2012 and Choo had a .389 OBP when he led off last season. For its riskiest move of the offseason, the club has decided to try moving lefty flamethrower Aroldis Chapman from closer to the rotation.

The group includes University of North Carolina men's coach Roy Williams, Louisiana State University women's coach Van Chancellor, the 1966 Texas Western University men's team, referee Marvin "Mendy" Rudolph and international coaches Pedro Ferrandiz of Spain and Mirko Novosel of Yugoslavia. Jackson, 61, has won nine NBA championships as a coach — six with the Chicago Bulls and three with the Lakers — tying Hall of Famer Red Auerbach's record. He has coached some of the NBA's greatest players, including Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen with the Bulls and Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal with the Lakers. Jackson gets players to buy into his coaching philosophy, which is influenced by Native American and Eastern beliefs. "The great thing about Phil is the way he has handled players," Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said. "He has a different style, too, that old Zen thing. I love him because he never gets too high and never gets too low and always wants to help the guys grow as men. He teaches them basketball and also teaches them outside the sport." One of his more renowned strategies is handing out books for players to read during road trips. "He's trying to get players to see that there's more to life than the NBA and your performance today," said NBA TV analyst Steve "Snapper" Jones.
