Since the closure of the Penang Hill Railway in late Febru- ary the mainstream media have published a stream of le ers om people in Malaysia and abroad making it clear that scrapping the historic railway will destroy a unique a raction that has drawn tourists not only o m Malaysia and the region but om all over the world. A Closer Look 89 Epilogue 113 Bibliography 118 3 INTRODUCTION Since its founding in the beginning of the fifteenth century, Melaka underwent four major transformations: from an Islamic Kingdom, to a Portuguese base, to a Dutch colony, and finally a British Settlement clubbed alongside Penang and Singapore. Over these years the dynamics it shared with other Indian Ocean polities, and its own position within the human world of this water body also significantly shifted. These shifts had a profound impact on the kinds of people who visited and settled in Melaka. Since its inception, Melaka had been peopled by a wide variety of communities, owing to trade and migration. By the nineteenth century, Melakan population mainly comprised of people of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Portuguese, Dutch and English origin. These included sailors, traders, labourers, shopkeepers, scribes, prisoners, etc. These various people had different kinds of interactions with each other on a day to day basis because of their occupations and lifestyle.
