Over these years the dynamics it shared with other Indian Ocean polities, and its own position within the human world of this water body also significantly shifted. These shifts had a profound impact on the kinds of people who visited and settled in Melaka. Since its inception, Melaka had been peopled by a wide variety of communities, owing to trade and migration. By the nineteenth century, Melakan population mainly comprised of people of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Portuguese, Dutch and English origin. These included sailors, traders, labourers, shopkeepers, scribes, prisoners, etc. These various people had different kinds of interactions with each other on a day to day basis because of their occupations and lifestyle.
