As I set about explaining, I do want to assure you that, unlikely as it seems, I am on the way to Stanton Parsonage. I shall take a rather roundabout route, bythe back lanes, but I shall end up at the Watsons' front door. I start out from the home ofJoan Austen-Leigh. That was where I once not held Jane's housewife, where, for a sudden startled moment, looking so much at the housewife as the minute size of the needle inside it, I had a very intense sensation of knowing Jane, glimpsing the Jane we do not know. It was Jane de-familiarized-Jane sewing, not Jane writing- although the question that was passing through my mind might have referred to either: how did she do it? I don't Pretend this experience is unique-although it was peculiarly female. We all have these moments. Mini remained with me, and had some part, I am sure, in my later desire, decision, to write Miss Abigail's Part or Version E Diuersion, which in a way reflects thatjuxtaposition ofthe needle and the pen, since it is the other side ofJane too, the story of Mansfield Park from the servant's point of view, the underside of that large household, the side you don't see. This kind of literary inbreeding is not new-oneJaneite friend ofmine has pleasant memories of Pemberley Shades, which follows the fortunes of Ltzzy andDarcy after they are married-but it is especially popular these days and has reached new heights of sophistication. -
Pride & Prejudice
Austen Jane Austen was a major English novelist, whose brilliantly witty, elegantly structured satirical fiction marks the transition in English literature from 18th century neo-classicism to 19th century romanticism. At the age of 14 she wrote her first novel, Love and Freindship (sic) and then A History of England by a partial, prejudiced and ignorant Historian, together with other very amusing juvenilia. In her early twenties Jane Austen wrote the novels that were later to be re-worked and pub- lished as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey. Pride & PrejudiceJane Austen Pride & Prejudice Pride Pride and Prejudice is the story of Mrs. and Mr. Bennet and their five daughters, Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine and Lydia, especially Elizabeth. The story focuses on various romantic adventures these young girls encounter at their residence. Their parents are strikingly contrasting to each other. Mr. Bennet comes across as a wise and witty gentleman, while the issue of marrying off her daughters has absorbed Mrs. Bennet completely. The arrival of the young and wealthy bachelor Charles Bingley and his friend Fitzwilliam Darcy in the neigh- borhood adds a new twist to Austen’s tale.. -

Claudia Dantoin, Undergraduate A British Homecoming: Growing Up Alongside Austen, Dickens, and Dahl On a spelling test in primary school, I was marked incorrect on one word: Color. That little word, to which I added the needed letter “u” highlights much of my character and growth as a book collector. As a young girl, home, for me, was always one of two places. The first was my own sanctuary, the family house, nestled amongst the rolling hills and red-barned landscapes of a small Wisconsin town. The second was amongst books, be they at the library or the local bookshop whose bespeckled shopkeepers knew me by name. However, such books magically shared one common point of origin. From the tender age of seven when I first picked up a Roald Dahl novel, I knew that I had found my ink and paper kin in a tiny island nation over 3,000 miles away: Britain. Amongst books, I sought out the avenues available for a magical trip across the pond. Into the rabbit hole. Through the looking glass. By means of the great glass elevator. All of these delightful inventions of the classic British authors enthralled me. Perhaps growing up with four siblings in the house made life a bit of a tornado of activity. From the chaos of everyday life, I would find peace in the rolling hillsides of Surrey and the perpetual magic of London. Through my British books I could find a world where Sherlock always solved the crime, tea arrived promptly at 4 pm on the nose, and small boys could change the mind of stodgy Lord Fauntleroys. -

But, Caroline’s conventional thinking—that the story was “all nonsense”—held for a long time in scholarship. Recently, the works of the juvenilia have enjoyed substantial re-readings, with scholars paying special attention to the very nonsense with which Caroline was concerned.4 Juliet McMaster’s groundbreaking Jane Austen, Young Author (2016) is the first book-length study of the juvenilia,5 which devotes significant space to one of Austen’s longer, completed works: Love and Freindship.6 McMaster draws attention to the I would like to thank Dr. Young-ok An for her patience and feedback on my work. 1. The present state of Jane Austen study shows the effects of its long history in several ways. Because scholarship and criticism tend to assimilate earlier discoveries and opinions, recent publi- cation is difficult to assess accurately; and because biogra- phy and criticism tend to overlap, much of that recently published is difficult to categorize clearly. These factors and the immense volume of the material can present several problems to one who must select material for a specific pur- pose, and the nature of its contents makes a bibliographical guide almost necessary. The titular character of the novella in particular presents a literary conundrum for critics and readers of Austen. Despite varied and colorful readings, critics have failed to fully resolve the differences between Lady Susan and Austen’s more beloved, maidenly heroines such as Elizabeth Bennet and Anne Elliott. -

JAMES HELDMAN Department of English, Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Kentucky 42I01 The Watsons is unique amongJane Austen's works in many ways, not the least of which is that it is the only work of her maturity which she deliberately chose not to complete. Beyond that, the experience of reading The Watsons seems to me to be strikingly different from the experience of reading her other works. Something is missing-or almost missing-something which is characteristic and even essential in her completed novels. That something is the narrative voice ofJane Austen telling us the story, informing us, guiding us, shaping our responses, standing between us and her characters as we together watch them live their lives. In a very real sense, despite her profound skill in presenting her stories dramatically, every Jane Austen novel is to some degree an extended conversation withJane Austen herself. One need only recall the opening sentence of Pride and Prejudice as perhaps the most famous illustration of this voice: It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. Emma by Jane Austen About the book INTRODUCTION (Excerpted from The Jane Austen Book Club) Emma was written between January 1814 and March 1815, published in 1815. The title character, Emma Woodhouse, is queen of her little community. She is lovely and wealthy. Se has no mother; her fussy, fragile father imposes no curbs on either her behavior or her self-satisfaction. Everyone else in the village is deferentially lower in social standing. Only Mr. Knightley, an old family friend, ever suggests she needs improvement. Emma has a taste for matchmaking. When she meets pretty Harriet Smith, "the natural daughter of somebody," Emma takes her up as both a friend and a cause. Under Emma's direction, Harriet refuses a proposal from a local farmer, Robert Martin, so that Emma can engineer one from Mr. Elton, the vicar. Unluckily, Mr. Elton misunderstands the intrigues and believes Emma is interested in him for herself. He cannot be lowered to consider Harriet Smith. Things are further shaken by the return to the village by Jane Fairfax, niece to the garrulous Miss Bates; and by a visit from Frank Churchill, stepson of Emma's ex- governess. He and Jane are secretly engaged, but as no one knows this, it has no impact on the matchmaking frenzy. The couples are eventually sorted out, if not according to Emma's plan, at least to her satisfaction. Uninterested in marriage at the book's beginning, she happily engages herself to Mr. Knightly before its end. About the author Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 at Steventon near Basingstoke, the seventh child of the rector of the parish.
