Poetic Anatomy of the Numinous Creative Passages into the Self as Beloved by PARTOU ZIA A thesis submitted to the University of Plymouth in partial fulfilment for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Research Falmouth College of Arts 2001 2 ABSTRACT PARTOU ZIA Poetic Anatomy of the Numinous Creative Passages into the Self as Beloved This research is shaped by the actual experience of practice: as painter and writer. My preoccupation is with the nodal moment when conscious awareness is suspended, and both the corporal and psychic involvement in realising the work almost transport one to another zone of effectiveness. This zone, which I name as the poetic zone, is where the numinous enters the ordinary. The investigation for a space/place/moment that lies beyond the logic of acceptable discourse can help initiate and give shape to a new vocabulary - visual or literary. By orchestrating a methodology, which functions on several layers, I have endeavoured to create a synthesis between painting and writing. My method in all the aspects of this research -·the thesis, play scripts, studio paintings, and albums - is firmly rooted in the conscious and critical intellect, as the vehicle that helps facilitate my need in establishing a personal arena for Becoming: - a deliberate yet semi-controlled state of charged eidetic experience, whereby the 'other' of the self is met with and (perhaps) named. By probing into the specific makeup or anatomy of the poetic moment, and coming to understand how it functions within both the pragmatic and the apparently undecipherable creative processes, the artist/poet, like the mystic visionary, may give an affirmative answer to the Self, as /-that-is-not-the-other. D., Trilogy; The Flowering of the Rod, 9] 9 FOREWORD The impulse that has shaped this doctoral research is derived from the actual experience of practice - focusing on the affect of both the sensuous and the cerebral, as a final outcome: how those qualities, in the realisation processes of the paintings, the albums, and poetic prose may be delineated. My artistic and poetic preoccupation is in trying to configure, and make coherent, the nodal moment when the conscious side of awareness is suspended; whence both the corporal and psychic involvement in realising and making the work almost transports one (the artist/poet) to another zone of effectiveness. This is what I consider and name as the poetic zone, or the moment of being, where the numinous enters the ordinary and the mundane. It is the space where the interiorised need to express imagery that is as yet not adapted to the so called 'logic' of acceptable discourses, begins to originate its own forms of expression. These instances of epiphany note what truly hold my research interest. Areas of transcendental expression, not easily defined, are what I grapple with in both my painting and writing practice.

    Eileen Cooper: Personal Space 3–5 Swallow Street London W1B 4DE 020 7434 4319 huxleyparlour.com Cover image: Sisters, 2019 Eileen Cooper: Personal Space Introduction I am very pleased to introduce our first catalogue of paintings by Eileen Cooper RA, which contains a completely new body of work produced especially for our first exhibition together. It is a remarkable group of pictures that nods to her earliest years as a painter, while also continuing to develop the themes of identity and womanhood that she has explored throughout her career. The exhibition’s particular theme of reflective, personal space is one that seems entirely appropriate to Cooper, whose studio itself is a domestic one, set in a light filled room above the convivial family kitchen in her Brockley home. Here in this high ceilinged, paint splattered sanctuary Cooper quietly makes her pictures, bathed in the rays that flood through the tall sash windows. For many years Cooper worked alone there with her imagination, but more recently she has re-welcomed models – which has given birth to a more immediate intimacy. As one of the country’s most influential female Royal Academicians, Cooper has been a force in the British art world for many years, most recently as a much-loved Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools. In seeking models for the previous project to ours, Cooper found herself welcoming a long queue of former students and their artistic brethren, which is testimony to the esteem and friendship in which she is held. Like them, I have adored getting to know and being around Cooper, whose warmth, and energetic approach to her life and work makes for an intoxicating environment.

One of her main artistic interests, particularly early in her career, was the way feminist concerns related to her dual roles as wife/mother and professional artist. She struggled to make a name for herself in the male-dominated art world between the 1930s and 1950s, beginning during a decade in which social roles for women increasingly tended towards domesticity. By the late 1960s, however, Citron’s interest in feminism was renewed by a new generation of women. The course upon which she set herself, in many ways, was uncharted and her concern with women’s issues and the challenges faced by women perhaps resonate more clearly with us today than while she was alive.

    1 Visual Essays on the Music Video Archive of Kendrick Lamar Brace yourself, I’ll take you on a trip down memory lane. -Kendrick Lamar, m.A.A.d city Reid Cohen Advisor: Juli Grigsby Department: Anthropology April 20th 2018 2 Abstract: My thesis project is a pseudo-ethnographic approach to archiving and analyzing four music videos from rapper Kendrick Lamar’s work. Through my analysis, I combine anthropological theory with visual studies to better understand how sound and image work together to construct music videos. Music videos represent a unique site of interest for me because of the ways in which we, as lookers, produce forms of knowledge through our interpretations of visual media. In my work, I’ll be archiving the ways in which Kendrick’s locality, politics, and musical ability intersect between the image and music. In an effort to better understand the impacts of music videos on visual culture, this analysis will hopefully guide a discussion of how we, as viewers, learn to see things – and hopefully, we participate in a reflexive process of trying to define how we see ourselves and our own positions in the world in relation to each other. 3 Acknowledgements Thank you to my advisor and mentor Juli Grigsby for helping me find a way to research something that I’m passionate about.
