The Roundabout The Parish Council is supporting the new Roundabout editorial team in developing and improving the Roundabout. You will have noticed the colour cover in the January edition, and the editorial team are planning other changes over the coming months to both the format and the content of the magazine to make it more interesting and in- formative. There will be information from the team as and when they make these changes. This month, the Parish Council is very pleased to note the launch of the new Roundabout website, where you can read the Roundabout on-line (the paper version will continue to be delivered to all households in the village), check an up-to-date diary of events in Buckden, and contribute to discussions about life in the village and locality through a discussion forum. The Roundabout has played a crucial role in the community life of the village over many years, and we believe that the new Roundabout website will play a major role in the years to come. Read the editorial and other information in this month’s edition about the website and check it out by going on-line here: www.buckdenroundabout.info

Superfast Broadband comes to Buckden Connecting www.connectingcambridgeshire.co.uk is rolling out superfast broadband to over 90,000 premises across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The new fibre broadband cabinets in Buckden are now live and accepting orders for superfast broadband. The Connecting Cambridgeshire website ‘my area’ pages for each area has links to the map showing the locations of the cabinets and advice on ‘How to get Superfast Broadband’. Our local library can link you up with someone to show you how, or call Cambridge Direct Contact Centre on: 0345 045 5200 to find your nearest community access point.

Mill Road/Greenway junction Some residents have expressed concerns that a number of drivers turning left onto Mill Road from Greenway are not looking left and are thereby risking a collision with traffic entering the village, which is on the right-hand side of the road, having negotiated the chicane at the entry to Buckden. At our Parish Council meeting on 14th January 2014, the Council passed a motion to approach Cambridgeshire County Council with a request to improve the sign- age at the end of Greenway. The Parish Council would urge all drivers to exercise caution at this junction and to always look both ways before turning on to Mill Road. There will be an extraordinary meeting of the Parish Council on 4th February in the Lincoln Room at the Village Hall starting 7.30pm. The normal monthly meeting of the Parish Council Meeting, including a 15 minute Public Forum on Tuesday 11th February starting at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend and raise any Buckden related issues.. If required, the Parish Council’s Planning Committee will meet on Tuesday 11th and Tuesday 25th February starting 7pm. Agendas for the meetings are posted on the Parish Council notice boards not later than the Saturday preceding the meeting.

NEWS RELEASE

The Flora and the Lizards of the Canary Islands, the Galapagos of the Atlantic

The Huntingdonshire Local Group of the Wildlife Trust is pleased to present an illustrated talk on the flora and lizards of the Canary Islands on Wednesday 12th February at 7.30pm at Brampton Memorial Hall, Thrapston Road, Brampton.

Our speaker, Peter Payne, formerly worked at the Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge and, since retire- ment, has been studying the flora of East Anglia and the Canary Islands.

There are seven main islands in the Canary Island archipelago, each distinctly different. They have a unique and beautiful flora and include 600 species only found on these islands, with many of these re- stricted to just one island. With birds their only predators, there are many lizards on the islands, includ- ing several exotic species with very restricted distributions.

Anyone interested in wildlife is most welcome to attend. Suggested donation: £2.00 members; £2.50 non-members.

Please contact Phil on 01487 822835 for further information.

ROUNDABOUT WEBSITE I am delighted to tell you that the website for the Buckden Roundabout is now live and can be found at www.buckdenroundabout.info. Some of the features are outlined below:

Monthly editions: All future editions of the magazine will be available online in the form of a flip-book— it is just like flipping through the paper copy! A pdf version will also be available to download for those of you that want to read this on the move on your tablet or Kindle.

Diary: As has been mentioned in previous editions, the Roundabout team will be maintaining a village diary on the website. The diary will contain all events that we are aware of. The principal idea of the dia- ry is to enable event organisers to check for clashing events when organising an event of their own, but it will obviously also be there for anyone to check what events are planned. Whilst we have started pop- ulating the diary it is dependent on event organisers contacting us so that we can enter the event de- tails. Please send entries for the diary to [email protected]. Please note this is not re- placing the For Your Diary section in the magazine - only minimal information will be stored online.

Announcements: Alongside the diary page we also have an announcements section which will have both time-sensitive articles and ‘stop-press’ type announcements.

Forum: This is the place where any discussions relating to the village and anything associated with it can be discussed. Registration is required but it is a simple process.

Additionally we are launching a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/buckdenroundabout) and a twitter account (@BuckdenRbt) which will regularly post relevant updates and provide event reminders.

Please do visit it and let us know what you think - we’d love to hear anything you have to say!

CHURCH NEWS

Weekly Prayer Roster

Each week during the year the Churches in their prayers, the residents of particular streets in the village, those who work in the parish and village organizations. Those to be remembered this month are:

2nd February Farming communities, Taylor’s Lane (West), Hardwick Lane, the residents and staff of Hard- wick Dene, Great North Road, Brampton Road, Perry Road, Buckden Wood

9th February High Street, Ivelbury Close, York Yard, Lion Yard, George Lane, King George Court, Taylor’s Lane (East), Wolsey Gardens, Charles Court

16th February Hunts End, Copes Close, Monks Cottages, Hunts End Court

23rd February Manor Gardens, Manor Close, Glebe Lane, The Grove

Thought for the month I am writing this a few hours after reading on BBC On-Line “Mikaeel Kular: Police find body and detain mother”. The three year old boy Mikaeel was reported missing from his home in Ferry Gait Crescent in the Muirhouse area of Edinburgh by his mother two days ago. Hundreds of volunteers, people of generous good will, have been searching for him but the worst possible outcome became true, he has been found dead.

I feel sad, very sad, for the death of this little innocent boy; I feed sad also for all the good neighbours who volun- teered to search for him as he was for them “their boy”, a member of the extended family which we are called to be with those living nearby in our villages or towns. But the greatest sadness invaded me when I read “his mother, named locally as Rosdeep, 33, was detained by police.”

We are not to judge anybody but if proven true our humanity is in crisis. The feeling of sadness became anger and is to be transformed into prayer. We need to get closer to God the source of all life, and to one another, be- cause only by improving our relationships will our lives improve and gain meaning. Our happiness depends only on the quality of our relationships.

Buckden as a community is good, perhaps it can be better, there is always room for improvement. Do we care enough for our children, for our youth for our elderly citizens? Shall we encourage ourselves to know our neigh- bour, remove fears and fences and open our hearts and houses so that we can know and care for one another?

This week Churches Together in Buckden remind us to move together towards a deeper unity. As believers, chil- dren of the same Loving God and Father, we are to become one family. And when our faith is weak or even not existing we still share in the same humanity. Let’s enter unity in our agendas; meantime be kind to one another, as a Japanese proverb goes “One kind word can warm three winter months”, ideal slogan for February; and none of our “Mikaeels” will go missing and we all will have life to the fullest.

Buckden Village Festival – 28th & 29th June 2014

Advanced notification to all clubs and businesses:

Calling all clubs and businesses in Buckden and surrounding areas, last year’s Buckden Village Festival was a great success with all stalls fully booked early on; we expect the same to occur for 2014, to guar- antee a place to showcase your club or business you will be required to have registered your details by March.

As a reminder Buckden Village Festival is one of Buckden’s most important dates for 2014. No one will want to miss out on our superhero themed, carnival inspired parade around the village, which upon arriv- ing at the park will continue with the fun with many stalls, including foods from around the world, local clubs, businesses and sporting activities with a full timetable to keep all busy for the afternoon.

If you are interested in having a stall or running an activity on the Festival afternoon, please contact: Na- than Cook on 01480 819355

For event queries and taking part in the parade, volunteering, or if you have suggestions for the week- end, please contact Philip Miles on 01480 810027

12 VILLAGE NEWS BUCKDEN VILLAGE HALL TRUST Burberry Road, Buckden, PE19 5UY Telephone: 01480 811101 Email: [email protected]

Registered Charity No. 302629 www.buckdenvillagehall.co.uk The New Year has got off to a good start here at the Hall, with the main hall receiving some TLC in the shape of a fresh coat of paint. We are also due to have the wooden floor cleaned, re-sealed and polished shortly, and are looking forward to seeing how this will transform the look of the hall, as well as helping to protect our lovely floor.

During January our weekend bookings included 3 children’s parties, 2 adult parties (one a 90th), and the Jivenites Anniversary party. As well as our regular weekly mix of fitness classes, Yoga, Slimming World, Model Railway we hosted the Pro-cam Farmers Presentation Day, a County Council Training Day and an Acupuncture course. Our newest recruit Line Dancing which started here at the end of last year have now taken a regular Tuesday after- noon slot, so please do come and give this a go – 1.45-2.45pm on Tuesday afternoons.

The 100 Club Special Christmas draw took place on the 20th of December. Patricia Loakes won 1st prize of £100, Pam Fraser 2nd of £50, and Tim Prince 3rd of £25. The next draw will take place at the end of March, and we do have room for some more members.

Our upcoming fund raisers start with a Tabletop Sale on Saturday 8th February, followed by a Quiz Night on Saturday the 1st of March, and rounding off with a delicious Spring Food Fair on Saturday 29th March. Please see further details for these events in the ‘For Your Diary’ section. BUCKDEN WI We had a very interesting first evening of the year with our proposed speaker being poorly. Fortunately we have talented speakers in our village and Barry Jobling saved the day by kindly giving us a talk about the First World war bringing along his artefacts. Very appropriate considering this year is the anniversary of the First World War. We will certainly be asking him to come again.

Next month dietician Dr. Sue Wood is going to talk to us under the intriguing title 'Healthy Eating, Is it just a load of old beans?'. Perhaps a talk we should all look forward to as we need to keep healthy through this miserable weather.

Our competition is for a 'Teapot' and the market stall is to bring something beginning with the letter U (our theme this year is to challenge members to find things each month as we spell out Buckden WI). Perhaps U is for Un- wanted! Visitors are very welcome as always.

Contact Pat King (President), with any questions. [email protected], 01480811020, 07905225911. Women’s World Day of Prayer (International and Interdenominational) Friday March 7th 2014

On this day a great wave of prayer will begin as the sun rises on Samoa and will sweep around the world until it comes to rest in Samoa some 36 hours later. By then WWDP services will have been celebrated in over 170 countries. The service this year has been prepared by the women of Egypt (on the theme of Streams in the De- sert) and will be celebrated in Buckden at 1030 AM in the Methodist Church, and in Perry at 2.30 PM in Perry Baptist Church.

All are welcome to attend - men, women, and people of all ages. For more information contact Beryl Atkin on 01480 810893 or see the WWDP website www.wwdp.org.uk Friends In Deed Winter Tea Party at Buckden Methodist Church Hall on Wednesday 12th.February 2.30pm - 4.00pm. If you have not received an invitation and would like one please phone Christine Lawrence and ask [this is not being "cheeky."] Transport can be provided.

Drop in for a Chat, Cake and Tea on the first Wednesday of every month in the Living Stones Room, St. Mary's Church.

One-off help to combat winter stress is offered, especially if we get any "real" winter and folk are unable to get about. The numbers to remember are: Transport - 07914 669967 - Andy Scott General - 07810 006 598 - Christine Lawrence
