__________________________________________ LIVING WATERS Today we begin a series on the Holy Spirit Jesus mentions the Holy Spirit in John 7 John 7:37–39 (NKJV) 37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. I want you to picture what’s happening • The Feast is the Feast of Tabernacles • It was one of 3 Pilgrimage Festivals where the Israelites were commanded to go to Jerusalem to worship at the Temple • For 7 days they were to live in a temporary huts called booths that future generations may know the Lord made the Israelites live in booths when He brought them out of the land of Egypt (Leviticus 23:42-43). • The last day was known as the Great Day of the Feast • On the last day, the Priests would go to the pool of Siloam, which was fed by a living spring from the Kidron Valley (living water) • They would fill a golden pitcher from the Pool of Siloam and go back through the streets of Jerusalem towards the temple • The people would line the streets and there would be singing and music, Palm branches waving... it was a celebration! • The Priest would arrive to the Temple through the water gate and as he entered the temple the priests would blast their trumpets 3 times • Once inside the temple, the priest with the water pitcher was joined by a priest with a pitcher of wine for the drink offering and they would walk around the altar 7 times... on the other days it was once, but 7 on the last • They would ascend up the stairs to the altar and on either side were two silver funnels that led to the base of the altar • The priests would pour the water and the wine in the 2 funnels at the same time... • Interesting picture of the cross, the blood and the water flowing from Jesus’ side THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT © 2018 Holland Davis __________________________________________ LIVING WATERS • Immediately after the pouring of the water they would recite the Great Hallel out of Psalms 113-118, shaking their palm branches towards the altar they would cry out Hosanna – save now • Thus the final day of the feast was known as the Great Hosannah • After the outpouring of living water, after the people respond in thanks with the Great Hallels, after they waved the palm branches to the altar and cried out for salvation there was a lull in the service • At that moment, you would hear the voice of Jesus from the Southern Steps of the Temple cry out... If anyone thirst, drink of Me and anyone who believes in Me... out of his heart will flow rivers of living water! • Whether they realized the connection or not, Jesus not only revealed Himself as the source of living water, but Jesus promised that this source would pour out of them as a gushing torrent of living water • John tells us that Jesus was speaking of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit • Most believers have experienced the Baptism of Repentance preached by John the Baptist • That’s the Baptism you experience when you’re born again... it signifies that you’ve surrendered your life to Jesus Christ and repented or turned away from sin • But even John the Baptist spoke of another Baptism • John said in John 1... I baptize with Water, but when Jesus appeared John said He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit This study we are going to answer the question of WHO... WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT? First, the Holy Spirit is God • In Genesis 1:1 we read... in the beginning God, Elohim, created the world • The word Elohim is plural for El • In the Hebrew there is a singular tense, a dual tense and a plural tense • God in the singular is El, in the dual is Elah and in the plural is Elohim • Thus Elohim suggests the Triunity of God... • The Passover Seder Dinner has the Unity Plate with 3 Matza’s representing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – the Triunity of God • The best way that I can explain the Triunity is with a musical chord • A Musical Chord is made up of 3 distinct notes... together they make up a chord and individually, they still sonically represent the chord, but also have their own independent sound THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT © 2018 Holland Davis __________________________________________ LIVING WATERS The Bible teaches the Holy Spirit has the attributes of God • The Holy Spirit is eternal • Hebrews 9:14 refers to the Holy Spirit as the eternal spirit • Genesis 1:2 says the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the earth during creation... thus the Holy Spirit was present at creation • Acts 15:18 says known unto God are all His works from the beginning of the world... • If the Holy Spirit was present at the beginning of the world and only God knows all His works from the beginning of the world... the Holy Spirit is God The Holy Spirit is omnipresent • Psalm 139:7 says where shall I go from Your Spirit? • Romans 8:9 says the Spirit of God dwells in all believers • Acts 2:17 says God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh • You can’t be everywhere at the same time unless you’re omnipresent The Holy Spirit is omnipotent • Romans 8:11 speaks of the Power of the Spirit to raise the dead • John 3:5-8 speaks of the Power of the Spirit to be born again • Romans 15:19 speaks of the Power of the Spirit to perform signs and wonders • Acts 10:38 says God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power and Jesus did good and healed all who were oppressed by the devil by the power of the Spirit • The Spirit has power over the devil, over sickness, over death and has the power to spiritually transform us into new creations in Christ... all demonstrating his omnipotence. The Holy Spirit is omniscient • Isaiah 40:13-14 says who has measured the Spirit of the Lord, who has counseled the Spirit? Who did the Spirit consult or who made the Spirit to understand? The Spirit already knows everything • 1 Corinthians 2:11 says the Spirit of God comprehends the thoughts of God and God reveals all things to us through His Spirit • 1 Corinthians 12 says the Spirit reveals knowledge and wisdom to man Secondly, the Holy Spirit is A Person THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT © 2018 Holland Davis __________________________________________ LIVING WATERS • The Bible never refers to the Holy Spirit as an it or a force or a power • The Holy Spirit is always referred to as He or Himself • Like any other person, the Holy Spirit has intellect, emotions and will The Holy Spirit speaks and makes His will known • Revelation 2:7 says let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches • In Acts 13:2 the Spirit said to set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work • The Holy Spirit intercedes • Romans 8:26 tells us the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words • The Holy Spirit testifies • John 15:26 says the Spirit of truth bears witness of Jesus • The Holy Spirit leads • Acts 8:29 Philip was led by the Spirit to minister to the Ethiopian Eunich • Romans 8:14 says being led by the Spirit is a sign that you’re a child of God • The Holy Spirit commands • Acts 16:6, 7 the Holy Spirit forbid them to speak a word in Asia • The Holy Spirit guides • John 16:13 Jesus said the Holy Spirit will guide you in all truth • The Holy Spirit Appoints • Acts 20:28 says the Holy Spirit appoints overseers to shepherd the church The Holy Spirit also lets His emotions show • Acts 5:3-4 ananias and Saphira lie to the Spirit • Hebrews 10:29 says the Spirit can be insulted • Matthew 12:31-32 says the Spirit can be blasphemed and blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is unforgivable • Ephesians 4:30 tell us the Spirit can be grieved • Romans 15:30 associates the emotion of love to the Spirit • All of these attributes are the attributes of a person • A force or a power cannot be grieved or love others • Because the Holy Spirit is a person, not just the essence of God or the Presence of God... you need to have a personal relationship with Him so that you might experience His love and power working in your life What kind of relationship can we have with the Holy Spirit? THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT © 2018 Holland Davis __________________________________________ LIVING WATERS The Bible says that we have 3 relationships with the Holy Spirit John 14:16–17 (NKJV) 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. Jesus mentions 2 relationships with the Holy Spirit • The Spirit dwells WITH you and will be IN you • The first relationship we have with the Holy Spirit is with or beside you • This is the relationship that everyone has with the Holy Spirit • The Holy Spirit dwells with or alongside all people • This corresponds with the role the Holy Spirit plays in people becoming born again John 16:7–11 (NKJV) 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth.
