  • RAMONES the Sire Years 1976-1981 Die Ersten Sechs Alben Der Punkrock-Pioniere in Einer Box!
im Auftrag: medienAgentur Stefan Michel T 040-5149 1467 F 040-5149 1465 [email protected] RAMONES The Sire Years 1976-1981 Die ersten sechs Alben der Punkrock-Pioniere in einer Box! „Hey ho, let’s go!” Und es waren Klassiker, die da über die Musikwelt hereinbrachen: „Blitzkrieg Bop“, „Beat On The Brat“, „Judy Is A Punk“ und „I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend“.

A School for Singing: The Poetics, Politics, and Aesthetics of the CBGB Scene Shaun Michael Cullen Springfield, PA M.A., Humanities, University of Chicago, 2005 B.F.A., Cinema Studies, New York University, 2002 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English Language and Literature University of Virginia December, 2013 © Copyright by Shaun Cullen All Rights Reserved November 2013 ii ABSTRACT On August 16, 1974, exactly one week after Richard Nixon’s resignation, the Ramones made their debut at CBGB. Over the next ten years, the club would become synonymous with the punk aesthetic that the Ramones embodied. By shifting, however temporarily and by no means completely, the focus of punk studies (and by extension, cultural studies, American studies, urban studies, and queer studies) back to an often disavowed origin point, CBGB and New York City, “A School for Singing” rediscovers a utopian imaginary inherent in that scene often taken to be one of the most shambolic and nihilistic in the history of postmodern arts and letters. Punk was not just a musical movement, it was an artistic event that had wider ramifications, felt across the art world, from the dingiest clubs to the most rarefied art galleries, publishing houses, and runways. Just this past year, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened its fifth most popular exhibit of all time, “Punk: Chaos to Couture,” which features, among other mementos of the punk era, a faithful recreation of the CBGB bathroom, where “all the action happened,” as Patti Smith once quipped.

He was Japanese American Museum. It was a strange place to see punk reading an issue of the zine Nervy Girl. He told me that I’d inspired him to AA bands. Their sets were incredibly short. It was an amazing show, pick up a copy of the zine. Since I’d never hear of it, I asked him what he anyway. After the show, Todd spotted The Brat’s guitarist walking around meant. He told me that all my talk of a media monopoly and the need for with copies of the only record they’ve released. I looked at Todd to make independent voices to balance out the mainstream corporate voices got to sure I wasn’t hallucinating. Because I have to admit, I’ve dreamed of him. He was in Hollywood and saw the zine and never would’ve picked it seeing this record in record stores so many times without actually seeing it up if not for me. He felt embarrassed purchasing it, he said, but now he that I’d begun to believe that the record only existed in dreams (and was glad he did. “Have you heard about all these women getting killed in Jimmy Alvarado’s record collection).

  • “It's TV's Fault I Am This Way”: Learning from Love-Hating The
Media Industries Journal 1.2 (2014), ISSN 2373-9037 “It’s TV’s Fault I Am This Way” – Oppenheim “It’s TV’s Fault I Am This Way”: Learning From Love-Hating the Media Industries 1 Phil Oppenheim Turner Broadcasting p.e.oppenheim [AT] gmail.com Abstract It’s okay to be conflicted about the media industries, argues a US cable television veteran in this insider perspective. Via an idiosyncratic, autoethnographic approach that focuses on one executive’s formative internal conflicts as he worked his way into and through the industry, this article advocates embracing our personal love-hate conflicts— and perhaps channeling one’s inner punk rocker in the process. This approach provides a way for critics of all kinds to look at the television industry with a perspective informed by passion and contrariness. Such conflict-forward critiques might encourage students to jab at an industry that they may later decide to lobby for employment and may encourage scholars to uncover issues and investigatory sites to explore that industry professionals would just as soon ignore. Ultimately, the author argues, such critical analyses might well work their way back to industrial practitioners, who remain open to listening to the tiny punks still screaming away in the back of their brains. Keywords: Broadcasting, Cable, Television This essay, which suggests potential directions for students and critics of media industry studies to consider, began not as a critical analysis but as a tirade.2 Neil Genzlinger, the television critic for the New York Times, aimed for a bit of whimsy during the height of the 2013 summer cable original series season.

  • From Prince to Tom Petty Awesome Album Liner Notes from Back in the Day
From Prince to Tom Petty Awesome Album Liner Notes From Back in the Day Lois M. Kirkpatrick 2 Copyright © 2019 Lois Kirkpatrick All rights reserved. No part of this book may be reproduced or transmitted in any form without express written permission from the author. 3 Back in the day, music lovers used to buy physical albums they could hold in their hands. Back when music was mostly sold on vinyl records, liner notes were printed on the paper sleeves (or “liners”) inside the record jackets. Liner notes helped educate listeners about the music they were about to hear. Sometimes liner notes described the artist’s inspiration for particular songs; at other times they explained the reasons the record was made. Some liner notes were soapboxes, giving writers a space to rant about pet peeves or political issues. A few record companies began printing liner notes on the back covers of record jackets. These outside liner notes were often written by publicists, or promotional writers from the company’s marketing department. Their essays had the same purpose as the blurbs printed on the back covers of books: to get you to buy the product. “The idea was to read the back of the record and decide if this was a piece you wanted to hear,” explains Tim Page, the Pulitzer Prize-winning music critic of The Washington Post. Page has written more than 200 liner notes, and was nominated for a Grammy award for liner notes in 2002. Many of the rock records produced in the late ‘60s had no liner notes.
