BEATLES HISTORY – PART ONE: 1956–1964 January 1956–June 1957: The ‘Skiffle Craze’ In January 1956, Lonnie Donegan’s recording of “Rock Island Line” stormed into the British hit parade and started what would become known as the ‘skiffle craze’ in Great Britain (vgl. McDevitt 1997: 3). Skiffle was originally an amateur jazz style comprising elements of blues, gospel, and work songs. The instrumentation resembled New Or- leans street bands called ‘spasms,’ which relied on home-made instru- ments. Before skiffle was first professionally recorded by American jazz musicians in the 1920s and 1930s, it had been performed at ‘rent parties’ in North American cities like Chicago and Kansas City. Many African- American migrant workers organized rent parties in order to raise money for their monthly payments (vgl. Garry 1997: 87). Skiffle provided the musical entertainment at these parties, as everybody was able to partici- pate in the band, which usually consisted of home-made acoustic guitars or a piano backed by a rhythm section of household instruments, such as a washboard, a washtub bass, and a jug (vgl. McDevitt 1997:16). Jazz trumpeter and guitarist Ken Colyer pioneered the skiffle scene in Great Britain. In 1949, he formed the Crane River Jazz Band in Cran- ford, Middlesex, together with Ben Marshall (guitar), Pat Hawes (wash- board), and Julian Davies (bass). Their repertoire included skiffle songs “to illustrate aspects of the roots of jazz and to add variety to a pro- gramme” (Dewe 1998: 4). After leaving the group in 1951, Colyer mi- grated to the United States to work with jazz musicians in New Orleans. -

En dehors d’Hughes Aufray, qui s’en réclame, le skiffle est un genre musical resté totalement obscur dans nos contrées. Il s’agissait, dans les années 1950, de rejouer le folk améri- cain et les musiques populaires des années 1920, 30 et 40, à grand renfort d’instruments pas chers, comme les kazoos, jugs (jarres servant de percussions grâce à leur résonance), washboards (les fameuses planches à laver, frottées d’une main dont chaque doigt est garni d’un dé à coudre) et wash- tub bass (que les aficionados du rock alternatif parisien se souviennent d’avoir vu chez les Nonnes Troppo et les VRP : il s’agit d’une corde tendue à la main sur un manche à balai, coincé sur une bassine, dont la manipulation frénétique pro- voque un son qui, effectivement, s’apparente à la contre- basse). Le roi du skiffle, Lonnie Donegan, un Écossais, eut une grande influence sur les futurs Beatles, et il finit par jouer avec Paul, George et Ringo, en 1979, pour la party de mariage d’Eric Clapton avec Pattie Boyd Harrison. Auflage Februar 2012 Einleitung John Lennon war der Mann, der aus den Beatles eine Popgruppe gemacht hat, deren Bedeutung fünfzig Jahre nach dem Erscheinen von Please, Please Me nicht nachgelassen hat. Beatles-Platten verkaufen sich heute stärker denn je, und es gibt wenige Menschen, die noch kein Lied von den Beatles gehört haben. Wenn man nach der Faszination fragt, die Lieder wie Can't Buy Me Love, Yesterday, Help! oder A Day In The Life ausstrahlen, nennen viele das musikalische Genie Paul McCartneys, eines der größten Melodienerfinders des 20. Jahrhunderts. McCartney allein aber fehlte das, was die Beatles so besonders machte. Es war John Lennon, der manchmal wenig, mitunter nur ein einziges Wort, beisteuerte und damit ein eher bedeutungsloses Lied mit einer hübschen Melodie namens Scrambled Eggs, wie Paul es bezeichnet hatte, veredelte und als Yesterday zum erfolgreichsten Lied aller Zeiten machte. Aber John konnte auch allein ganze, umfassende musikalische Kunstwerke von hohem Rang schaffen. Bei seiner Ballade Imagine, die er nach dem Ende der Beatles herausbrachte, fehlt nichts. Das Lied ist rund und vollkommen sowohl inhaltlich wie auch von Seiten der Melodie, gesungen nur am Klavier von einem Mann mit einer unvergesslichen, eindringlichen Stimme. Johns Liebeslieder waren es auch, die die Beatlemania auslösten. Er wusste, wie man einfache Worte so sagt, dass sie ehrlich und direkt und bedeutungsvoll klingen und dadurch Begeisterung wecken können. Der Erfolg der Beatles beruhte auf dieser Botschaft, dass Liebe alles ist, was man im Leben braucht. Für viele Menschen war John Lennon ein Heilsbringer. -
