correspondence between latter day saint leaders and prominent non cormonsmormons in this issue of the historians comercorner we present two such sets of correspondence the first edited by dr ronald G watt of the church historical department concerns lyman wight a former apostle who led a colony to texas after the death of joseph smith 1 here we see wight s attitude toward the utah church perhaps gaining some insight into reasons for it as well as wilford woodruff s very powerful defense of the church while preparing a history of mormon indian relations dr larry C coates of ricks college discovered some interesting corres- ponpondencedence between brigham young and the famous american artist george catlin catlin is especially well known for his sympathetic and accurate treatment of american indian culture and his unusual proposal to brigham young reflects his deep concern for the future of the indian people it also reflects at least one very interesting public image the of his life and also raised the question as to why the apostles had cut him off from the church I1 received your favor on the 12th instdinst dated july ist 1857 you may be assured it was well received it being the first I1 have received from any of the twelve for the last 12 years I1 had come to the conclu- sion that they had become so far advanced in the order of the king- dom and become so popular in temtemperaperal things that they had entirely forgotten that such an uncouth old plough goger gouger or codger as lyman wight had an istanceexistanceexistenceex on the face of the earth but I1 yet live and am bold to say that of the doctrine of joseph smith the angel of the seventh dispensation there is not a firmer believer or defender on the face of the earth and hold every ordination striving very hard to come to this very place with 250000 men he therefore requested me to come and establish a church in this region and such mission was even talked of while in jail where I1 had the advantage of six months teaching and received many things that is yet unknown to the church never having refused to obey the prophet I1 startstartedededed in all good faith had but just got out of hearing before I1 was accused from the stand by who would be big of begingbebing the mission of br joseph who to passify me gave his consent and that I1 run away from nauvoo to get rid of fighting and that he could chase me all over nauvoo with a plug of tobacco I1 acknowl- edge I1 am afraid of tobacco but should have no fear of the person for I1 believe he was too lazy to have chased me all over nauvoo he pitched into me largely on many occationsoccasions but I1 care very little about the whole I1 did not so much wonder at this having been with him for four weeks after the death of br joseph and I1 do not re colece of hearing him use the pronoun we when speaking of the twelve for the first time but got the pronoun I1 so completlycomplexly to per- fection that I1 considered myself out all together I1 soon learnt that I1 was cut off from the church but never learnt what it was for after lerningberning this I1 found I1 had no where to go but to my beloved br joseph and to the saviour with the former I1 have had many com- munications face to face without a dimming vail between and re- ceived many good instructions this has been to me fully satisfactory and as I1 am a little timid Baugh On 6 April 1839, Joseph Smith, his brother Hyrum, Caleb Baldwin, Alexander McRae, and Lyman Wight were taken from the jail in Liberty, Missouri, and placed in the custody of a strong guard assigned to transport them to Gallatin in Daviess County for what was expected to be a formal hearing on the charge of treason against the state. The Smiths and Wight had been in state custody for more than five months, Baldwin and McRae slightly less. For over four months, the five men had languished in the loath- some Liberty dungeon. However, unbeknown to them at the time, in less than three weeks, they would be free men and would be reunited with their families and friends in Illinois. The Gallatin hearing, the release of Joseph Smith and his companions, and their flight across northern Missouri com- prise one of the concluding chapters of the Mormon experience in Missouri. The Arrest and Incarceration of the Mormon Prisoners Following nearly three months of civil conflict between the Mormons and their Missouri neighbors, Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, George W. Robinson, Lyman Wight, and Parley P. Pratt were arrested at Far West, Caldwell County, Missouri, on 31 October 1838. The following day, Hyrum Smith and Amasa Lyman were taken into custody. Baugh On October 27, 1838, after nearly three months of hostilities between Mormon and Missouri settlers in Daviess, Carroll, Ray, and Caldwell Counties, Missouri, Governor Lilburn W. Boggs signed an executive order authorizing the state militia to subdue the Mormon populace and force their surrender, and ordered them to evacuate the state.1 The order was carried out by Samuel D. Lucas, a major general in the state militia and the commander of the troops from Jackson and Lafayette Counties. The day before issuing the “Extermination Order,” Boggs relieved Major General David R. Atchison of his command of the state militia in the Northern District.2 Atchison’s release probably stemmed from the fact that he had served as legal counsel to Joseph Smith and was at least partially sympathetic of the Mormons. Boggs replaced Atchison with John B. Clark of Howard County. However, since Clark was not on the scene to take charge, Lucas assumed command. On October 31, General Lucas and his officers negotiated a peaceful, albeit unfair settlement with a five-man Mormon delegation led by George M. Hinkle, commander of the Caldwell County militia. FIRST PRESIDENCY, QUORUM OF THE TWELVE, AND PATRIARCH Th e following chart shows the members of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, as well as the church patriarch, with their dates of service.     Lyman Wight Lyman Wight 1796-1858 Lyman Wight, the son of Levi Wight and Sarah Corbon, was born in the township of Fairfield, Her- kimer County, New York, on the 9th day of May, 1796. He served the Republic in the War of 1812-15 with Great Britain. He united with Isaac Morley and others in forming a society in Kirtland, Ohio, conducted on the common stock principle, being one phase in the rise and progress of the Campbellite church. He was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ, by Oliver Cowdery in 1830, and was soon afterwards or- dained to the office of an elder. He was ordained to the office of high priest by Joseph Smith at the June con- ference in Kirtland, 1831. While at that conference, he testified he had a vision and saw the Savior. He went to Missouri in 1831 by revelation. He soon after went to Cincinnati on a mission to preach the gospel. On arriving in that city he called at a hotel and engaged his board for several weeks. The landlord asked him if he was a merchant. He said, “No.” He asked him what his business was. He replied, he was a preacher of the gospel. He asked him what or- der he belonged to. Johnson, Utah State University Press 2006; and “Church Almanac.” EARLY TEXAS CHURCH HISTORY Joseph Smith sent an emissary, Lucien Woodworth, to Sam Houston in Austin during March 1844 to investigate the possibility of purchasing territory in the Texas Republic to create a nation in southwest Texas as a buffer between Texas and Mexico and a place for the Church to exist unmolested. Brother Woodworth was likely the first Mormon in the Texas area. Final negotiations were to be handled by Woodworth, George Miller, and Almon Babbitt but Joseph was martyred about one month after Woodworth’s return which ended negotiations. Texas became a state during 1845. The first Mormon group to enter Texas to live would have been the approximately 150 people led by Apostle Lyman Wight during 1845 as they journeyed to Texas from the Pinery area of Wisconsin. This group rejected the leadership of Brigham Young and the Apostles at Nauvoo in favor of what they thought, was the will of Joseph Smith to go to Texas.

Baugh In discussions associated with some of the significant Liberty Jail events, the statement is sometimes made that Joseph F. Smith, eldest son of Hyrum and Mary Fielding Smith, was blessed by his father during his 1838–39 incar- ceration. Is there historical evidence to support this conclusion? Significantly, neither Hyrum nor Mary is known to have left any statements regarding such a blessing. Likewise, it appears from the existing sources asso- ciated with this episode that none of the other prisoners—Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, Lyman Wight, Alexander McRae, or Caleb Baldwin—made any mention of it. During their confinement, the Mormon leaders were also visited by a number of Latter-day Saints, yet from those known to have vis- ited the jail, no accounts about the blessing can be found. Even in the biog- raphy of Joseph F. Smith, written by his son Joseph Fielding Smith (one who would have been privy to many undocumented or unwritten incidents in his father’s life), the narrative is silent, suggesting that perhaps neither Joseph F. nor Joseph Fielding may have even been aware of the incident—if it indeed occurred.1 Significantly, the only known statement by a contemporary of the period to indicate that Hyrum blessed his infant son in the jail comes from Edward Stevenson. In his reminiscences, Stevenson recorded, “Joseph F. Smith, with his mother, visited his father in this same jail, and although but an infant, received a blessing under his hands.”2 Besides this statement, what other evidence is there to suggest that the blessing may have taken place? BENNETT While most students of American westward migration know something of Brigham Young and the Mormon exodus across the Great American Desert to the Great Basin in 1846, few know much about a Mormon splinter group under the command of James Emmett that defiantly staked out a temporary headquar- ters in 1845 in what is now South Dakota. This tiny slice of early South Dakota and Mormon history represented an abortive chal- lenge to Brigham Young's consolidation of authority and control over his followers as they trekked west. For a short time, James Emmett offered an alternative to what Brigham Young was try- ing to do. In June of 1844, Joseph Smith, the Mormon prophet and found- er of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was mur- dered at Carthage, Illinois. Approximately seventeen thousand Latter-day Saints, then concentrated in and around the Mississip- pi River town of Nauvoo, Illinois, were stunned and paralyzed at the news. The prophet's death hurled the young church into a maelstrom of conflict over the succession to the leadership.
