The results of the beetle research realized during years 2007–2008 in the Kaňon Ohře protected in Natura 2000 are presented in this paper. The locality is formed by the deep rocky (granit) valley of the Ohře (Eger) river cove- red mostly with spruce, pine and birch forests, locally also with relict lime-oak forests on the rocky slopes and rests of old-growth beech woodlands. The occurrence of stony debrices is common in this area. Non-altered river locally with small sandy beaches is very important for the diversity of the locality. Altogether 637 species were found in this area during the research from which 29 species are redlisted. The area is rich for saproxylic beetles (dead wood dependent). Click beetle Anostirus sulphuripennis (Elateridae), weevil Otiorhynchus desertus (Curculionidae) and saproxylic beetles Mycetophagus decempunctatus (Mycetophagidae) and Rabocerus gabrieli (Salpingidae) are the most valuable species found in the locality. • Coleoptera: Elateridae) of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba
87 Chapter 2 Click Beetles and Wireworms (Coleoptera: Elateridae) of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba Willem G. van Herk and Robert S. Vernon Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, 6947 #7 Hwy, Agassiz, British Columbia Email: [email protected] Abstract. This chapter describes the Elateridae of Alberta (144 species), Saskatchewan (108 species), and Manitoba (109 species). It provides current names for species, as well as synonymized names that persist in the literature. Also discussed are the species that have been left out during recent changes to elaterid renaming and classification, although no new name combinations are given. The chapter outlines species distributions, biogeography where known, and the life histories of five common species: Aeolus mellillus (Say), Agriotes mancus (Say), Hypnoidus bicolor (Eschscholtz), Limonius californicus (Mannerheim), and Selatosomus aeripennis destructor (Brown). An examination of the seasonal movements and activity of larvae in response to soil temperature and moisture and moulting cycles is followed by an overview of past research on Prairie Province species. The chapter concludes with a discussion of current research needs and management issues.

  • Tarset and Greystead Biological Records
Tarset and Greystead Biological Records published by the Tarset Archive Group 2015 Foreword Tarset Archive Group is delighted to be able to present this consolidation of biological records held, for easy reference by anyone interested in our part of Northumberland. It is a parallel publication to the Archaeological and Historical Sites Atlas we first published in 2006, and the more recent Gazeteer which both augments the Atlas and catalogues each site in greater detail. Both sets of data are also being mapped onto GIS. We would like to thank everyone who has helped with and supported this project - in particular Neville Geddes, Planning and Environment manager, North England Forestry Commission, for his invaluable advice and generous guidance with the GIS mapping, as well as for giving us information about the archaeological sites in the forested areas for our Atlas revisions; Northumberland National Park and Tarset 2050 CIC for their all-important funding support, and of course Bill Burlton, who after years of sharing his expertise on our wildflower and tree projects and validating our work, agreed to take this commission and pull everything together, obtaining the use of ERIC’s data from which to select the records relevant to Tarset and Greystead. Even as we write we are aware that new records are being collected and sites confirmed, and that it is in the nature of these publications that they are out of date by the time you read them. But there is also value in taking snapshots of what is known at a particular point in time, without which we have no way of measuring change or recognising the hugely rich biodiversity of where we are fortunate enough to live.

  • Effect of Distance to Urban Areas on Saproxylic Beetles in Urban Forests
Effect of distance to urban areas on saproxylic beetles in urban forests Effekt av avstånd till bebyggda områden på vedlevande skalbaggar i urbana skogsområden Jeffery D Marker Faculty of Health, Science and Technology Biology: Ecology and Conservation Biology Master’s thesis, 30 hp Supervisor: Denis Lafage Examiner: Larry Greenberg 2019-01-29 Series number: 19:07 2 Abstract Urban forests play key roles in animal and plant biodiversity and provide important ecosystem services. Habitat fragmentation and expanding urbanization threaten biodiversity in and around urban areas. Saproxylic beetles can act as bioindicators of forest health and their diversity may help to explain and define urban-forest edge effects. I explored the relationship between saproxylic beetle diversity and distance to an urban area along nine transects in the Västra Götaland region of Sweden. Specifically, the relationships between abundance and species richness and distance from the urban- forest boundary, forest age, forest volume, and tree species ratio was investigated Unbaited flight interception traps were set at intervals of 0, 250, and 500 meters from an urban-forest boundary to measure beetle abundance and richness. A total of 4182 saproxylic beetles representing 179 species were captured over two months. Distance from the urban forest boundary showed little overall effect on abundance suggesting urban proximity does not affect saproxylic beetle abundance. There was an effect on species richness, with saproxylic species richness greater closer to the urban-forest boundary. Forest volume had a very small positive effect on both abundance and species richness likely due to a limited change in volume along each transect. An increase in the occurrence of deciduous tree species proved to be an important factor driving saproxylic beetle abundance moving closer to the urban-forest.

New data on little known species of click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae) in Lithuania. Baltic J. Coleopterol., 10(1): 45 – 60. The study is devoted to the new faunistic data on the little known click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae) in Lithuania. The data of long term faunistic investigations of authors as well as material stored in the natural museums of Lithuania and private collections have been examined. The results of re-examination and new information about distribution of 28 species of click beetles in Lithuania are presented in this article. The presented information includes exact label data and number of specimens, the places of collections as well as maps of distribution and comments about habitats of 28 species of click beetles. One species Ctenicera cuprea (Fabricius, 1775) is removed from the list of Lithuanian beetles. Key words: Coleoptera, Elateridae, fauna, distribution, Lithuania Vytautas Tamutis, Povilas Mulerčikas. • West Penwith Moors, Cornwall: Invertebrate Sample Survey for Broad and Specific Assemblage Type Identification
Natural England Commissioned Report NECR340 West Penwith Moors, Cornwall: Invertebrate sample survey for Broad and Specific Assemblage Type identification. (2015) First published January 2021 www.gov.uk/natural-england Foreword Natural England commission a range of reports from external contractors to provide evidence and advice to assist us in delivering our duties. The views in this report are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent those of Natural England. Background - An invertebrate sample survey of sites across the West Penwith Moors was commissioned by Natural England in order to provide evidence in support of the potential notification of key areas of semi-natural habitat and features as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Targeted sampling was undertaken within selected survey areas (see Appendix 2) and analysed in terms of ISIS assemblages – Natural England’s developing Invertebrate Species and habitats Information System. The fieldwork was carried out in two phases - September 2013 and July 2014 – in order to increase the range of species detectable by broadening the seasonal coverage. • Diversity and Species Composition of Beetles in the Herb-Shrub Layer of a Large Isolated Raised Bog in Belarus
Diversity and species composition of beetles in the herb-shrub layer of a large isolated raised bog in Belarus G.G. Sushko Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection, Vitebsk State University P.M. Masherov, Belarus _______________________________________________________________________________________ SUMMARY Temperate zone peat bogs form isolated ecosystems relative to their surroundings. The aim of the work reported was to investigate the species composition and diversity of the field layer beetles of an undisturbed natural bog in Belarus. In total, 99 beetle species belonging to 13 families were sampled along transects, using a sweep-net. A specific complex of Coleoptera species was found. The results showed a low diversity and species richness of beetle assemblages and a high abundance of a small number of species. Among these species, the primary peat bog specialists were Cyphon kongsbergensis Munster, 1924, Cantharis quadripunctata (Müller, 1764), Plateumaris discolor (Herbst, 1795), Aphthona erichsoni (Zetterstedt, 1838) and Altica longicollis (Allard 1860), which are rare in central Europe. Both the abundance and the species richness of Coleoptera were highest in shrub habitat. General linear modelling results (GLM) indicated that vegetation characteristics strongly influenced beetle abundance and species richness in peat bogs, which is interpreted as a measure of heterogeneity.
