CDD 588 Sinopse: Realizou-se a atualização da flora de briófitas epifilas das reservas do PDBFF como fonte taxonômica para futuros estudos ecológicos e de monitoramento da flora briofítica. Além disso, foi avaliado o impacto da fragmentação sobre as comunidades epifilas na Amazônia Central em longo prazo por meio da comparação da estrutura das comunidades coletadas no ano 2000 e 2016. Com isso, sugeriu-se como as espécies respondem à fragmentação utilizando traços de história de vida. Palavras-chave: Briófitas, Lejeuneaceae, dispersão, fragmentação. Sinopse: Neste trabalho foi proposto o uso de dados morfológicos, espectrais e de distribuição geográfica como linhas de evidência para delimitar espécies do complexo Ocotea canaliculata (COC). Além disso, um tratamento taxonômico é apresentado para as espécies reconhecidas. iii Palavras-chave: complexo de espécies, NIR, morfometria, taxonomia, delimitação de espécies. Confúcio vii RESUMO Estudos de comunidades de plantas tropicais que tentam separar os principais mecanismos que influenciam suas distribuições (conectividade e qualidade do habitat) por meio de paisagens fragmentadas são escassos. Briófitas epifilas devido a suas comunidades espacialmente delimitadas, altamente dinâmicas e grande diversidade dos sistemas sexuais é um modelo excelente de estudo, com o qual se combinam dados da comunidade e demográficos, tendo em conta os traços adaptativos para abordar quais são os mecanismos que controlam distribuições das plantas terrestres. Este trabalho é um estudo sobre uma meta comunidade altamente dinâmica de briófitas epifilas, para investigar mudanças temporais na estrutura da comunidade em fragmentos florestais e relacionar as alterações aparentes com diferença nos traços adaptativos em relação a dispersores mais eficazes e maior tolerância fisiológica. Para tal, foi utilizado como base para comparação, dados sobre a estrutura da assembleia de epifilas publicadas em um estudo realizado no PDBFF há 15 anos atrás. Assim, foram amostradas comunidades de briófitas epifilas, a fim de avaliar se as mudanças na riqueza de espécies, abundância e composição ocorreram nos anos seguintes. Com base em resultados anteriores foi testada a seguinte hipótese: a estrutura da comunidade de epifilas mudou nos fragmentos pequenos (1 ha e 10 ha) para as espécies com traços adaptativos com maior capacidade de dispersão e tolerância fisiológica. Para as briófitas epifilas observamos nos fragmentos pequenos (1- e 10-ha) um nível de recuperação na abundância, riqueza e composição de espécies, convergindo com os fragmentos de 100 ha e floresta continua. As alterações positivas na comunidade de epifilas foram relacionadas com traços adaptativos de vida que representam maior capacidade de dispersão e tolerância fisiológica. viii ABSTRACT Studies of tropical plant communities which attempt to disentangle the principle mechanisms (connectivity and habitat quality) influencing their distributions across fragmented landscapes are scarce. Epiphyllous bryophytes, due to their spatially patchy distribution, high turnover and diversity of sexual systems, are an excellent model system with which to combine community and demographic data in light of life history traits to address what mechanisms control terrestrial plant distributions. In this work I studied a highly dynamic community, epiphyllous bryophyte, to investigate temporal changes in community structure in forest fragments and relate apparent changes with difference in life history traits in relation to more effective dispersers and physiological tolerance. By using baseline data on epiphyll assembly structure published from a study conducted at BDFFP over a decade ago, I sampled epiphyllous community in order to evaluate whether changes in species richness, abundance and composition have occurred in the intervening years. Based on previous results I test the following hypothesize: epiphyll community structure has changed in small (1- and 10-ha) to bias species presenting life history traits which favor increased dispersal capacity and physiological tolerance. For epiphyllous bryophytes we observed a degree of recovery in the abundance, species richness and composition in small fragments (1- and 10-ha), converging with 100 ha fragments and continuous forests. (Lejeuneaceae, Marchantiophyta) are reported for the whole of Australia, more than doubling the number of taxa known since the first account of the Australian members of the genus. Cololejeunea cairnsiana Pócs, Cololejeunea heinari Pócs and Cololejeunea floccosa var. fraseriana Pócs are described as new to science. The records of Cololejeunea diaphana A. Evans, Cololejeunea gottschei (Steph.) Mizut., Cololejeunea longifolia (Mitt.) Benedix ex Mizut. Cololejeunea verrucosa Steph. and Cololejeunea floccosa(Lehm. & Lindenb.) Steph. var. amoenoides Tixier are new for the continent. Cololejeunea amoena Benedix is treated as a variety of Cololejeunea floccosa. Cololejeunea tortifolia Steph. is synonymized with Cololejeunea microscopica (Taylor) Schiffn. and is excluded from the Australian flora. The name Cololejeunea cambodiana Tixier is validated. A key for the Australian taxa and an analysis of their distribution follow the enumeration of species. Mishler, Chair Leaf surfaces of tropical vascular plants provide homes for diverse groups of organisms, including epiphyllous (leaf-colonizing) bryophytes. Each leaf harbors a temporally and spatially discrete community of organisms, providing an excellent system for answering some of the most fundamental questions in ecology and evolution. In this dissertation, I investigated two main aspects of epiphyllous bryophyte biology: 1) adaptive traits of bryophytes to living on the leaf surface, and 2) community assembly of epiphyllous bryophytes in space (between-hosts) and time (succession). For the first part, I used published trait data and phylogeny of liverworts in family Lejeuneaceae to demonstrate that only the production of asexual propagules appeared to evolve in response to living on the leaf surface, while other hypothesized traits did not have correlated evolution with epiphylly. The second portion dealt with the assembly of communities among different host types.

The first ever liverwort and hornwort checklist is provided for Paraguay. Despite the high level of biological diversity in Paraguay, there remain very few intensive collecting efforts for liverworts and hornworts in the region since the late 1800’s. We report 2 hornwort taxa and 71 liverwort taxa. The list is based on almost 100 literature references, including monographs, regional studies, and molecular investigations. Given the dramatic loss of habitats in Paraguay coupled with high species diversity in other organisms, further collecting of liverworts and hornworts is critical. There is also the potential to use historical records with contemporary collections to investigate the impact of habitat loss in the area. However, apparent rarity can emerge from incomplete data sets or incorrect sampling. Epiphyllous bryophytes are a poorly collected and taxonomically complicated group, with incompletely known distribution patterns. In this paper we explore the diversity patterns and meso- and micro-habitat specialization of common and rare epiphyllous bryophyte species, and evaluate the threat status of Aphanolejeunea gracilis, Leptolejeunea tridentata, and Otolejeunea schnellii. Epiphylls were collected from 240 samples (10 × 10 cm) in 30 plots of 5 × 5 m in superhumid lowland forest of the Chocó, Colombia. Our results indicate that epiphyll diversity and species composition is similar among palm and non-palm leaves. Disturbance had a negative effect on epiphyll cover, species richness, and diversity of rare species. Data on rare species did not correlate with global or national red lists, indicating that detailed surveys are necessary to accurately assess the threat status of “rare” species. China cBotany Department, Institute of Biology, Eszterházy College, Eger, Hungary Abstract – Leptolejeunea latilobula Lei Shu, R.L.Zhu & Pócs, a new species from Fiji, is described and illustrated. This species stands out within Leptolejeunea on account of its large size of leaf lobule with four cells wide on the apical portion, lobe apex acute to apiculate, margin more or less dentate, and underleaf lobes linear, usually two cells long. Leptolejeunea serrulata Herzog is proposed as a synonym of Leptolejeunea tripuncta (Mitt.) Steph., previously known only from Fiji. A neotype of Leptolejeunea tripuncta is designated. We present an improved and updated taxonomic synthesis of the genus in Tropical America. Fifty-four species and six varieties are recognized, in seven sections; the number of accepted neotropical species is reduced about 20 percent. A key to neotropical taxa of Cheilolejeunea is provided and each species and variety is briefly described with data on differen- tiating characters, distribution and published illustrations. Sixteen new synonyms and two new lectotypifications are proposed; new names are: C. sect. Trachylejeunea (Spruce) C.J.Bastos & Gradst. comb. nov., C. aneogyna var. riparia (Steph.)
