I will be standing at the General Election on 8th June and with your support I hope to continue to represent this historic constituency and help it meet its potential. I would like to take this opportunity to endorse all of the fantastic Conservative Party candidates in the upcoming local elections on 4th May. Having worked with them all, I know how committed they are to making their communities stronger and even better places to live. As a constituency, we have achieved a great deal in recent years. Unemployment has fallen by 73% since 2010. We are recognised for our strong skills base and the opportunities for growth, including in the manufacturing sector and creative industries. Our local NHS, not least Warwick Hospital, has an enviable reputation. Our schools and colleges are providing our young people with the best start in life. I pay tribute to our health workers and teachers who have made this possible. I have been involved in many local projects: the planned installation of lifts at Warwick Station; supporting the New Inn in Norton Lindsey becoming the first ‘community pub’ in Warwickshire; and assisting in the ‘No More Floor’ campaign. I have introduced new businesses with Vitsoe and Ubisoft investing in Leamington and I recognise the collaboration between the local authorities and Local Enterprise Partnership that helped make this possible. In Parliament I have spoken on the Industrial Strategy and have been involved in the development of the policy; have led a debate on the Midlands Engine to champion our region’s economic potential; and raised my concerns over the conflict in Yemen. I continue to listen to the views of local residents and have demonstrated my willingness to challenge the Government: I have maintained my stance against HS2; I voiced opposition to the proposed forced academisation of schools; I wrote to the Prime Minister and Secretary of State to raise concerns over school funding; amongst other issues. I supported the call for this General Election. With the scale of change that we now face, it is right that the British people have their say in who governs the country. I hope to have the opportunity to continue in my role as your Member of Parliament, both promoting the many achievements of our towns and villages and also representing your views in Westminster. I have always tried to make myself as accessible as possible and hope to have the opportunity to meet with you in person over the next few weeks.     Chancellor’s Commission Essay Competition: The University of Warwick – Supporting, Inspiring and Engaging a Region The University of Warwick finds itself nestled in a region to which it can lend its powerful skillset. The area that this essay will be focusing on in particular will be the West Midlands, especially Birmingham and Coventry, and Warwickshire. This essay will also draw upon my own views as I believe a personal opinion can help to shed light on some of the ways Warwick University could positively help its local community. Issues to be discussed will include challenges facing young people, greener living through sustainability, rural economy, and the current issue of the construction of ‘High Speed 2’ (known as HS2). Firstly, however, this essay will focus on housing. Housing has been ranked as the most urgent issue in need of address for local councils in a recent survey1. Speaking to local MP Mr Chris White, of Warwick and Leamington constituency, he observed more people in need of houses than there were houses to accommodate them2. Though housing issues face the whole nation, it can be argued that the Mr White’s constituency faces a more unique problem as he stated how the housing crisis is coupled with issues of congestion and public transport3. Many students can attest to these problems, with the latter appropriately summarised by Warwick University’s SU President in a recent open letter to Stagecoach4. Indeed, Mr White’s discussion of the background to the housing issue is punctuated by Warwickshire County Council’s community strategy plan for the next decade which states how “housing affordability is still an issue, particularly in certain parts of the County”5.

About the authors Chris White was the MP for Warwick and Leamington between 2010-2017. He was a member of the International Development and the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committees. He has taken part in a number of inquiries including those on the Industrial Strategy and the Productivity Plan. Chris Chaired the All Party Groups on Manufacturing, Social Enterprise and Video Games and continues to have an interest in these areas, not least in his role as President of the Warwickshire College Group. Dr Benedict Wilkinson is a Senior Research Fellow in the Policy Institute at King’s. He completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor Sir Lawrence Freedman at King’s College London in 2013, before joining the Policy Institute as a Research Associate in 2013 before being made a Senior Research Fellow in 2015. This year our talented finalists pitched to a panel of prestigious judges. The panel included Lord Jo Johnson, former Universities Minister; Dame Louise Casey, former Victims’ Commissioner and government homelessness tsar; and Professor Rosie Campbell, Director of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership.
