“A high energy performance from a band with more musical instruments than you can shake a drumstick at!” – Andrew Marston on BBC Introducing in & Worcester

Worcester’s The Purple Shades have just self-released their new single ‘Blunder’, the last track to come from their forthcoming EP, Kings Of Summer, which is set for release later this summer.

The track continues to display the band’s already concrete style, sharing the guitar-driven pace, the intrigue and the anthemic tone as their last single ’21.2’ which also appears on the EP.

On the upcoming EP frontman Dylan says “Kings Of Summer is a concept EP playing on the idea of growing up and not being particularly happy about it, so looking at the past through rose-tinted spectacles”

He adds “’Blunder’ is the perfect first single for the EP with the opening line “This morning we had our lives ahead of us” setting the tone for the whole release, and by the end of the song we come full circle and start accepting the smaller things in life”

They have had lots of support from BBC Introducing’s Andrew Marston who featured them on his show after recording a live session with them, and he put them forward to play on the BBC Introducing Stage at 2018. The Purple Shades are Dylan Boddy (vocals/guitar), Charlie Brooks (bass), George Bowles (guitar/vocals/keys), Luke Rhodes (guitar) and Sam Hennerley (drums).

The band was formed by Dylan, Sam and some other friends in 2011 and have been writing and performing together for over 8 years! Changes in line-up of the years have resulted in Charlie, George and Luke taking up roles on bass and guitars.

Over most of the past decade they have steadily released music, performed at several festivals and toured the UK, the most recent being a mini tour in 2017 in support of their single ‘Baboons’. They’ve spent lots of time developing their signature sound but also experimenting with different instruments and methods of production in both Dylan and George’s home studios. This led them to recording an EP of demos called Saddle Stones, released exclusively on Bandcamp.

As well as BBC Introducing, they have had support from the MAS Records development programme, founded by Kevyn Gammond (of Band Of Joy), which has Ricky Wilson (Kaiser Chiefs), Robert Plant () and Karl Hyde (Underworld) as patrons.

They cite The Kooks, Arctic Monkeys, Tame Impala, The Beach Boys and Bob Dylan as some of their key influences.

The Purple Shades will be playing at Annie’s in Worcester on September 27th 2019.
