WOLF Walton REID The University of the West Indies, Electron Microscopy Unit, Mona, St. Andrew, Kingston 7, JAMAICA, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The changes of the chorion shortly after egg deposition, referred to as postdepositional dynamics in this article, are described in the predatory stink bug Podisus sagitta using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). For comparison, ovarian eggs were studied with the light microscope. At this stage, the aero-micropylar processes, slender appendages mounted at the anterior pole of the egg, are folded inwards and form arc-like threads over the anterior plate of the egg. The processes gradually straighten after deposition and assume an upright orientation. In freshly deposited eggs, spines dotting the chorion are curved. Ultimately these structures straighten and project at right angles from the surface. The eggs of P. sagitta are barrel-shaped and possess a spinose chorion, a common microsculpture detected in stink bug eggs. Previously unknown features concerning the spinose chorion include the heterogeneity of spines dotting the anterior plate. In addition, a narrow band of the anterior plate bordering the aero-micropylar processes shows polygons formed by shallow ridges. Key words: Aero-micropylar process, spinose chorion, stink bug INTRODUCTION The appearance of eggs in three representatives of the Asopinae, a subfamily of the Pentatomidae with a predatory feeding style (for a review, see De Clercq, 2000), has been studied so far. These are Podisus maculiventris (Javahery, 1994; Lambdin and Lu, 1984, Bundy and McPerson, 2000), Troilus luridus and Picromerus bidens (Mayné and Breny, 1942; Javahery, 1994). Only the former species has been examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM); the studies involving the.

In the case of insects, most published DNA barcoding studies focus on species of the Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Hymenoptera and especially Lepidoptera. In this study we test the efficiency of DNA barcoding for true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), an ecological and economical highly important as well as morphologically diverse insect taxon. As part of our study we analyzed DNA barcodes for 1742 specimens of 457 species, comprising 39 families of the Heteroptera. We found low nucleotide distances with a minimum pairwise K2P distance ,2.2% within 21 species pairs (39 species). For ten of these species pairs (18 species), minimum pairwise distances were zero. In contrast to this, deep intraspecific sequence divergences with maximum pairwise distances .2.2% were detected for 16 traditionally recognized and valid species. With a successful identification rate of 91.5% (418 species) our study emphasizes the use of DNA barcodes for the identification of true bugs and represents an important step in building-up a comprehensive barcode library for true bugs in Germany and Central Europe as well.

Fully inflated internal structures of the aedeagus of 18 species of Asopinae were studied. The examination of the Asopinae confirmed the monophyly of this taxon and revealed three distinct types of the aedeagal structure within the subfamily. These types differ in the structure of the theca, median penal plates, and ventral, ventrolateral, and apical conjuctival lobes. These characters can be used in phylogenetic analysis as well as in a tribal classification of asopines. A B S T R A C T The population density of pentatomid bugs was worked out in major vegetable growing belts of Kashmir valley during the cropping season of 2013-14. For the study of population densities field observations of two common species of Pentatomid bugs were carried out. The species namely Eurydema pulchrum and Dolycoris indicus were found in highest numbers from two selected districts of Kashmir Viz., Srinagar and Budgam. The number of individuals of specified species collected in different seasons, months and weeks at a site in district Srinagar (Batapora) indicate that the highest population density of the species was in the summer season while it was very low in spring and autumn season. Flight activity of the pentatomid pests varies with species, seasons and the site. The maximum flight activity was observed in early summer and in late summer. The flight activity continued until November depending upon the temperature nonetheless during this month, flights were usually of very low incidence. The flight activity of plant bugs stopped altogether during winter months in Kashmir valley. Based on these studies, the agricultural crops could be saved from bug attack by timely intervention and application of suitable management tactics to reduce their populations below economic injury level.

Adult brown marmorated stink bug found in London © Fera Background The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), native to East Asia, is an invasive species that is expanding its range in North America (first detected 1996) and in Europe (first detected 2004). It is highly polyphagous, and since 2017 it has become a major economic pest in northern Italy attacking a range of crops including apple, pear, kiwi, peach, apricot, cherry, hazelnut, soya and corn crops, in some cases causing significant losses (estimated losses in 2019 were €250 million). It is also a pest of peppers grown in glasshouses in Hungary and Switzerland and is a nuisance when thousands of adults enter residential and commercial buildings in the autumn to overwinter, leaving a characteristic unpleasant odour. BMSB is not being treated as a quarantine pest in the UK because it is not considered possible to regulate all the potential pathways that the pest could arrive on, as it is a well- known hitchhiker on non-regulated commodities, such as packaging material associated with manufactured products and passenger luggage. BMSB has been intercepted in Britain on several occasions in association with imports of a variety of commodities from China, mainland Europe and North America. There have also been findings in the wider environment, mostly in southern England and one finding in Leicester, but so far there has been no evidence of breeding. It is highly likely that BMSB will be encountered more frequently in Britain as it is becoming more common and widespread on the continent.

The oak processionary moth, Thaumetopoea processionea, is established in Europe and feeds primarily on deciduous oak (Quercus) species. The insect has one generation per year and overwinters as eggs laid on branches of oak trees. After emergence, the larvae feed gregariously and from the 5th instar form a communal silken nest on the tree from which they typically migrate in procession to feed. Feeding may result in partial or complete tree defoliation. From the third instar, the larvae produce urticating hairs which may cause allergic reactions in humans and animals.

Lattin The Nearctic species of the pentatomid genera Apateticus Dallas and Podisus Herrich-Schaeffer were revised taxonomically. Approximately 8500 Nearctic specimens plus 500 extralimital examples were examined. Five species of Apateticus and 9 of Podisus, including 1 incidental Nearctic species, are redescribed. Important characters for species discrimination include shape of the male claspers, length of the ventral abdominal spine, and characteristics of the pronotum. Female genitalic characters are not reliable for species-level distinctions within each genus. Re-evaluation of previously used characters and additional male and female genitalic traits support the idea that these genera should remain separate. A cladistic analysis was performed on the species of each genus. One new species, Podisus brevispinus, is described. The latter, heretofore known as P. modestus (Dallas), has long been associated with a type specimen which is a synonym of P. maculiventris (Say). Examination of Rhaphigaster aggressor Walker, listed as synonymous with P modestus, showed the former to be a Neotropical Podisus. The following synonymies are suggested (junior synonym first): A. crocatus (Uhler) = A. bracteatus (Fitch), P. pallens (Sega) = P. maculiventris (Say) (reaffirmed), P. modestus (Dallas) = P. maculiventris (Say), and P. rubromaculatus Distant = P. acutissimus Stk. Podisus maculiventris, P. brevispinus, P. placidus Uhler, P. serieventris Uhler, and hEattLizas bracteatus are widely distributed in the United States and Canada.
