Pentatomoidea and Their Egg—Parasites THE BIOLOGY OF SOME PENTATOMOIDEA AND THEIR EGG—PARASITES By Mie JAVAHERY A thesis presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Science of the University of London. March, 1967. Imperial College Field Station, Silwood Park, Sunninghill, Ascot, Berkshire. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is divided into two sections. The first concerns the bionomics, habitats, reproductive biology of six Pentatamoidea, Heteroptera. The second section deals with eight species of egg parasites (Scelionidae, Hymenoptera) and includes their taxonomy and biology. The environment in which the six species of Heteroptera, Aelia acuminata (L.), Eurygaster integriceps Put". Neottiglossa pusilla (G.), Palomena prasina (L.), Piezodorus lituratus (F.) and Picromerus htdens (L.) live is described in the first section. Their biology and ecology in southern England and that of E. integriceps in Iran were investigated and compared. The reproductive morphology of all these species is outlined and the effects of environmental factors, especially of the food and temperature on fecundity and longevity of the adults, was investigated. The effects of these factors on the rate of development of the immature stages was also studied. Particular attention was paid to reproduction in Eurygaster integriceps in view of its economical importance and its status as a serious pest of cereal crops in Iran. Changes in the sizes of populations of A. acuminata and P. lituratus were recorded at Silwood Park, Berkshire. The problem of 3 winter diapause, migration and their possible relationship was studied. In the second section, six newly discovered British species of Scelionidae from the genera Asolcus and Telenamus were investigated. The first key to the identification of these wasps and of the closely related non-British species based on "bio-morphological taxonomy" is constructed. A study was made of the immature stages, adults, and the reproductive morphology of all the species in relation to various hosts and temperatures. Aggressive behaviour, ability of the parasites to select suitable host eggs, oviposition, copulation, the rate of development and sex ratio of all species, are described. Life histories, resistance to low temperatures, interspecific interference and host specificity of these minute wasps were observed throughout three seasons. Percentage of parasitism of eggs of several Pentatomoidea by Asolcus and Telenomus species at Silwood and at Yateley, were calculated for 1965 and 1966. New methods of rearing both the shieldbugs and their scelionid egg parasites have been devised. Packauskas1 Abstract Forty eight species of Pentatomidae are listed as occurring in the state of Kansas, nine of these are new state records. A key to all species known from the state of Kansas is given, along with some notes on new state records. ____________________ The family Pentatomidae, comprised of mainly phytophagous and a few predaceous species, is one of the largest families of Heteroptera. Some of the phytophagous species have a wide host range and this ability may make them the most economically important family among the Heteroptera (Panizzi et al. 2000). As a group, they have been found feeding on cotton, nuts, fruits, veg- etables, legumes, and grain crops (McPherson 1982, McPherson and McPherson 2000, Panizzi et al 2000).

Saline habitats have a key role in conservation of numerous plant and animal species in Vojvodina, as well as characteristic communities of true bugs. These insects belong to one of the most diverse insect groups in saline habitats. Species Henestaris halophilus (BURMEISTER, 1835), Conostethus hungaricus WAGNER, 1941 and Solenoxyphus fuscovenosus (FIEBER, 1864) are saline specialists and can be found only in these habitat types. True bugs have great qualities for future biomonitoring projects concerning habitats such as saline grasslands and wetlands. During the study, species Hydrometra gracilenta HORVÁTH, 1899 and Solenoxyphus fuscovenosus (FIEBER, 1864) are recorded for the first time in Serbia. No sexual dimorphism was observed in the glandular composition of this species. The gland is located in the anteroventral corner of the metathoracic pleura between the middle and posterior coxal pits. The opening to the outside of the gland is very wide and permanently open as it lacks a protective membrane. In the internal part, there is a pair of metathoracic glands that consist of piles of intertwined and occasionally bifurcated cellular tubes or columns. These glands discharge their pheromonal contents into the reservoir through a narrow cuticular tube. The reservoir connects with the vestibule via two opposite and assembled cuticular folds that can separate muscularly in order to allow the flow of liquid away from the insect. The external part consists of an ostiole from which the pheromone is emitted.

The spherical shaped eggs were 1.04 mm in length and 0.96 mm in width. The first external evidence of embryonic development was the appearance of two red eye spots opposite each other beneath the aero-micropylar processes followed by appearance of a blackish T-shaped egg burster between the eye spots. Egg surface are covered with polygons. They have 20 to 22 aero-micropyles in a shape of truncated cones between polygons. The paper is divided into three parts. In the first part of the research surprised the early period can be placed throughout the XIXth century between Latreille and Dalla Torre. Before this period, references about platygastrids and scelionids were made by Linnaeus and Schrank, they are the ones who described the first platygastrid and scelionid respectively. In this the first period work entomologists as: Haliday, Westwood, Walker, Forster, Ashmead, Thomson, Howard, etc., the result of their work being the description of 699 scelionids species which are found quoted in Dalla Torre's catalogue. The second part of the paper is devoted to early 20th century. This vibrant work is marked by the work of two great entomologists: Kieffer and Dodd. In this period one publish the first and only global monograph of platygastrids and scelionids until now. In this monograph are twice the number of species than in Dalla Torre's catalogue which shows the magnitude of the systematic research of those moments. The third part of the paper refers to the late 20th and early 21st century.
