This work was abruptly arrested by the war, and the fresh start necessary on the liberation of the country emphasized that much health work still remains to be done. A realistic approach to certain disease-problems and the necessity for compe- tent outside assistance to tackle such problems form the basis for future work. The accomplishments of the Ethiopian Government in the limited time since the war bode well for the future.

A total of 384 samples were collected from different kebeles near Jimma. Out of the total sampled 164 (42.71%) were positive for Fasciolosis. According to coprological examination, variation in prevalence among the localities was not statistically significant (p>0.05). The result also revealed no statistically significant difference between sexes and ages (p>0.05). Infection rate in poor body condition animals (74.80%) was significantly higher (p<0.05) than good body condition animals (12.20%) and this indicates that the importance of Fasciolosis in causing weight loss and weakness, a characteristic of sign of chronic Fasciolosis. Results obtained in this area were discussed in comparisons with the finding of other research works.

The majority of Africa’s population lives in rural or remote areas while only a small percentage of healthcare facilities capable of specialized treatment are accessible to them there. Ethiopia shares the same in the way that a concentration of trained healthcare workers in the urban centers in overcrowded hospitals that not only have to treat their own patients but support the surrounding facilities. Even while the federal system in Ethiopia has provided referral hospitals in remote areas they are under-funded and constantly experiencing a shortage of trained staff. The objective of this project is to strengthen the capacities of ten university and regional hospitals, selected from a group of twenty referral hospitals in Ethiopia. The current specialized clinical out reach project in Ethiopia is just starting up as national programme. Therefore it has limited experience and resource in the Ethiopian context. Therefore it is assumed to be an area of lesson accumulation, start up for advocacy on the need of the population and indigenous system establishment. Emphasis is given on the probability, area and service coverage of informality, and the effect of informal operators on the formal transport industry. The study shows that the manifestation of informality on the long distance bus market is relatively insignificant (about 13%) compared with small and mid-scale buses. The sector also serves about 15 major towns such as Mekele, Dire Dawa, Shashemene, Wolita Soddo, Jimma, Bahir Dar and Gonder Towns. The most relevant effects of informal operators on formal industry and long distance bus in particular are the accelerated increase in the rate of accidents, lack of tax payments and driving over the distance limit. Informality also leads the legal operators into illegality. Thus, one can infer that the accelerating rate of informality becomes a threat for the formal sector operators in general and the long distance bus market in particular, in the nation and developing countries. Received 7 September, 2014; Accepted 7 January, 2015 Climate change was defined as a statistically significant variation in the mean state of climate. Accordingly, with regards to rainfall, a working hypothesis that reads as: there is a statistically significant change (increase/decrease) in the mean annual and seasonal rainfall values at weather stations was forwarded for testing. Eight years (2001-2008) annual and seasonal rainfall data of 17 weather stations from most parts of Ethiopia were used for the purpose. Setting the significance level at 0.05, the simple correlation and regression techniques were used to reach results. Most stations from the western part of Ethiopia were seen to exhibit statistically significant increasing trend in annual rainfall receipt. Albeit not significantly, northward and eastward from here, the receipt was also seen tending first to increase then decrease. This tendency was observed to overlap with the traditional distribution of rainfall in the country. The alternating of dry and wet years and the more localizing of wet years than dry years were identified. The four seasons considered were observed to be statistically significant, but increasing and decreasing trends in seasonal rainfall receipt at the respective stations were not significant.

    The Ethiopian Commodity Exchange and the coffee market: Are local prices more integrated to global markets? By Manuel A. Hernandez, Solomon Lemma and Shahidur Rashid, IFPRI The Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) was established in April 2008 with the objective of improving market efficiency by better linking smallholder farmers to markets, encouraging reliable trading relationships and increasing market information. In December 2008 it became mandatory to trade all coffee through the ECX. This paper examines whether Ethiopian coffee prices have become more integrated to world prices after the implementation of the ECX. We follow a multivariate GARCH approach to evaluate the degree of correlation and volatility transmission across international, auction and producer price returns. We focus on the five major Ethiopian coffee varieties using monthly data for the period 1992 through 2013. The estimation results indicate that not all coffee regions have necessarily become more connected to world markets, at least not in the first five years after the implementation of the mandatory regulation. We also do not find a higher integration across regional coffee prices. 1. Introduction In the 1990s, several African countries started to implement market-oriented agricultural policies as part of their development policy framework. Around that time, African economies had experienced dramatic changes in their export commodity markets, including shocks associated with price declines, which needed to be addressed (Akiyama, 2001; Gemch and Struthers, 2007; Rashid et al., 2010). The interventions differed across countries and commodities, but the ultimate goal remained the same.     MARKET ANALYSIS NOTE #2 Grain Market Research Project Ministry of Economic Development and Cooperation January 1997 THE RESPONSE OF ETHIOPIAN CEREAL MARKETS TO LIBERALIZATION1 This Note assesses how liberalization of Ethiopia’s grain marketing system in March 1990 has affected the level and volatility of wholesale prices and price spreads between major regional cereal markets. The paper also identifies issues and problems needing attention to guide future policy decisions with the aim of reducing marketing costs in the food system and thereby promoting the welfare of grain producers and consumers in Ethiopia. The study focuses on three cereals (maize, white teff, and white wheat) and eight markets: Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Mekele, Bako, Shashemene, Jimma, Bahir Dar, and Hosaenna. Markets are chosen based on the availability of continuous time series price data covering at least three years before and after market liberalization.2 The major findings of the report are as follows: & Cereal price spreads (the difference in wholesale prices) for major regional markets have generally declined since liberalization in 1990. In 24 market pairs covering maize, white teff, and white wheat, average price spreads declined in 23 cases after liberalization (Tables 1 and 2). Prices in the major surplus-producing areas for which data are available have risen by 12% to 48%, while prices in deficit regions have declined by 6% to 36% in eight of nine cases. & The volatility of wholesale cereal prices has declined since liberalization in 11 of 16 cases for which data was available (Table 1). The volatility of cereal price spreads between different markets has also declined since liberalization in 23 of the 24 cases examined (Table 2).

    Analysis of the Changing Functional Structure of Major Urban Centers of Ethiopia Engida Esayas1 and Solomon Mulugeta2 Abstract The study attempted to analyze the patterns of the changing functional structure of major urban centers of Ethiopia over the period of 2009 to 2012. An economic base, export employment multiplier and shift share analysis were used to identify the basic sectors, the export employment and expanding and declining industries in fifteen major urban centers. The location quotient results showed that there have been changes in economic bases, for twelve out of fifteen urban centers. The major sources of export employment were construction, distributive and social services for most of the towns considered. Export employment analysis has indicated that some towns of leading regions have relatively higher percentage of export employment compared to others. In general, the major drivers of the urban employment growth in many urban centers over the study period were found to be distributive, social and extractive sectors. However, the role of the transformative economic sectors, particularly the manufacturing sector is not as such encouraging for many towns. Against this back drop, the analysis surfaced local economic development issue such as how the towns included in this study could capitalize more on the transformative economic sectors through various incentive mechanisms.
