  • And the Ship Sails On
And The Ship Sails On by Serge Toubiana at the occasion of the end of his term as Director-General of the Cinémathèque française. Within just a few days, I shall come to the end of my term as Director-General of the Cinémathèque française. As of February 1st, 2016, Frédéric Bonnaud will take up the reins and assume full responsibility for this great institution. We shall have spent a great deal of time in each other's company over the past month, with a view to inducting Frédéric into the way the place works. He has been able to learn the range of our activities, meet the teams and discover all our on-going projects. This friendly transition from one director-general to the next is designed to allow Frédéric to function at full-steam from day one. The handover will have been, both in reality and in the perception, a peaceful moment in the life of the Cinémathèque, perhaps the first easy handover in its long and sometimes turbulent history. That's the way we want it - we being Costa-Gavras, chairman of our board, and the regulatory authority, represented by Fleur Pellerin, Minister of Culture and Communication, and Frédérique Bredin, Chairperson of the CNC, France's National Centre for Cinema and Animation. The peaceful nature of this handover offers further proof that the Cinémathèque has entered into a period of maturity and is now sufficiently grounded and self-confident to start out on the next chapter without trepidation. But let me step back in time. Since moving into the Frank Gehry building at 51 rue de Bercy, at the behest of the Ministry of Culture, the Cinémathèque française has undergone a profound transformation.

  • 1 Adapting Pagnol and Provence. Jeremy Strong Abstract This Chapter Examines Marcel Pagnol's Novel L'eau Des Collines
Adapting Pagnol and Provence. Jeremy Strong Abstract This chapter examines Marcel Pagnol’s novel L’eau des collines (comprising Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources: 1962) and their film adaptations (Dir. Claude Berri, 1986). It places particular emphasis on the construction of the adaptations as a major French cultural event and as constitutive of what would come to be termed ‘heritage cinema’. The role of the films – in particular their lush cinematography and representation of the Provencal countryside – in the subsequent explosion of tourist interest and second-home ownership in Provence will also be discussed. Drawing on texts as diverse as Peter Mayle’s A Year in Provence (1989) and the critical literature of Travel and Tourism Studies, the chapter examines the role of books and their screen adaptations in shaping attitudes to places and people. Keywords: Adaptation, Provence, Tourism, Travel, Adaptation Tourism, Psychogeography, Marcel Pagnol, Peter Mayle. Introduction It is nearly impossible to commence this chapter without remarking upon the coincidence that Marcel Pagnol’s birth in 1895 in Aubagne, Provence, was in the same year that his countrymen Auguste and Louis Lumière held the first public screenings of their cinematograph in Paris. Yet Brett Bowles reminds readers that this pleasing accident of chronology was not necessarily ‘a sign that Pagnol’s fate was somehow cosmically intertwined with cinema’ (Bowles, 2012a. 10). Bowles indicates that while Pagnol’s family history did not readily suggest a nascent facility for any particular art-form, including the newest, what was to prove remarkable was his success across several media and roles.

MoMA CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF RIALTO PICTURES WITH 17-FILM RETROSPECTIVE Series by Leading Distributor of Classic Repertory Cinema Spotlights Some of the Finest Filmmaking Talents Such as Robert Bresson, Luis Buñuel, Federico Fellini, Jean- Luc Godard, and Jean-Pierre Melville Rialto Pictures: Reviving Classic Cinema July 25–August 10, 2007 The Roy and Niuta Titus 1 and 2 Theaters NEW YORK, June 26, 2007—Celebrating a decade of titles issued by Rialto Pictures, The Museum of Modern Art presents a 17-film survey from the distributor’s catalogue of extraordinary cinema. Rialto Pictures: Reviving Classic Cinema, presented July 25 through August 10, 2007, in The Roy and Niuta Titus 1 and 2 theaters, includes some of the most acclaimed films produced over the past six decades. These classics of cinema include Jules Dassin’s stylish and taut heist film Rififi (1955), Carol Reed’s memorable film noir thriller The Third Man (1949), and Jean-Pierre Melville’s powerful depiction of French Resistance fighters in L’armée des ombres (Army of Shadows, 1969), which was released in the United States for the first time in 2006, to wide critical acclaim. The exhibition is organized by Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art. In 1997, film programmer and curator Bruce Goldstein established Rialto Pictures, a company dedicated to invigorating classic cinema by ensuring that it continued to be viewed, as originally intended, on the big screen. Since then Goldstein, in conjunction with his partner Adrienne Halpern, has released almost 40 fresh, and often restored, 35mm prints of classic foreign films with new English subtitles not seen in theaters since their original runs, and has premiered films never before distributed in America.
