events Lincoln Center Midsummer Night Swing

"In New York, everywhere you look there's something interesting to see and it's usually in human form. I love Lincoln Center. It's my favorite place. I love the architecture. I'm no maven, but I love to look up and say, "Wow that's pretty." I love how they're redoing it. I was worried because it was always my favorite. I thought, they're going to wreck it when they redo it, but they're doing a great job. Little by little, it's getting better and better.

I really love walking around Lincoln Center outdoors, especially when they have Midsummer Night Swing in the summertime. I love being outside. I don't know how to dance. We are always playing at the dances. But I like to listen to the music and stroll around and look at the people, it's fun."

-- Paul Shaffer, Musical Director, The Late Show With and Emmy -nominated and Grammy-Winning Composer and Musician

food & drinks

Osteria Laguna 209 East 42nd Street Link to Website

A little bit corporate (it is midtown, after all) and a little bit casual (day trippers from nearby Grand Central), Osteria Laguna has nailed its audience and delivers a perfect blend to suit both worlds. Inside, it's delightfully rustic, complete with the requisite Italian ceramic plates and wooden chairs with rush seating. Crowd-pleasers like pastas, pizzas from the wood-burning oven, antipasti, salads, and nicely done fish, starch, and vegetables comprise the menu at this better-than-average gem. The friendly service can be spotty, but the perfectly crisped wood-fired pizzas are always spot on. The portions are abundant, perhaps even too much given the tiny tables, but the prices aren't, so you can treat your out-of-town friend and keep the change.

The Ginger Man 11 East 36th Street Link to Website

Skip the sweet soju cocktails in neighboring K-Town and head to this vaguely Irish-themed bar instead, which features 66 taps and 120 bottles of the good stuff like Brasserie de Bretagne Sant Erwann and Australian Cooper's Pale. Don't expect the hippest weeknight crowd, but it's a solid bet for after-work drinks with a refreshing lack of douchiness for a Midtown bar. Good for groups, too, if you can snag the over-sized couches.
