General student profiles for Extreme Blue in The Netherlands:

We want result-driven, motivated people who contribute to the professional community. More tangible: we look for contributions to Open Source projects, research, independent projects, active involvement in user groups and professional societies, USENET/web discussions, mailing lists, etc.

We are looking for folks motivated by learning, being challenged, having an impact in the marketplace and being active contributors to the project.

We are looking for people that are team players and who together deliver effective teamwork in a professional environment and contribution to overall team dynamics. We value both leadership and followership skills. Communication and organizational skills are an important component of this.

In summary, we are looking for students with a combination of strong technical skills, analytical skills, organizational/team skills, initiative, and passion to help us manage the inherent risk of undertaking a challenging project within the context of a very short summer. We believe that this is an attractive profile for people that will be effective in IBM and the industry in the long term.

Our selection methodology will be based on maximizing team effectiveness, by offering a select number of individuals their dream job (fit of skills and interests). Best fit, as opposed to a generic ranking of applicants and figuring out what to do with them later. Participating in the Extreme Blue program will be an effective means for building their knowledge network and improve their personal effectiveness on the job.

User Interface Design Student profile:

The ideal user interface designer for this project is a student that dreams and talks with his/her hands while holding a pen. This student is absolutely fascinated by the possibilities IT has to offer once hardware and software really gets to know it’s users.

Creating mockups and prototypes is a second nature for this person. Preferably a number of those mockups or prototypes demonstrates an affinity with the web, java based apps and even Lotus Notes or other collaborative environments.

Our student must have experience/knowledge in user-centered design including usability testing. During the Extreme Blue period we will use the extreme UCD version of this methodology.

We offer the dream of every UCD person: a large community of IBM colleagues that are eager to help during the design period.

Our student understands information personalization principles and has a special interest Our student understands information personalization principles and has a special interest in personalizing applications. Given the amount of profile information available he/she cannot wait to feed resume tools, individual development plan tools etc.

Social & Behavioral Sciences student profile:

We are looking for a student that feels at home in the soft sciences part of personalizing devices, applications and information. Experience with psychological profile building, matching of individuals and communities, social network analysis and information needs of individuals and communities.

The IBM team will provide insight to the student in the workings of today’s top IT personalization and profiling technologies. The student is expected to provide more understanding in what profile aspects are important, to what degree and in what context (job role, geography, activity, areas of interest, emotion, surroundings etc) in combination with the privacy aspects.

MBA student profile:

The MBA student we are looking for will contribute profiling expertise from a marketing point of view as well as investigate the business and legal implications of Extreme Profiling.

Experience/knowledge with direct marketing, business intelligence, data mining, profile matching and forecasting techniques, skilled in business concept innovation, Sales and Marketing. A person who feels challenged by maximizing and defining the potential business opportunities and competitive edge this Extreme Blue project will deliver to IBM.

Computer Sciences student profile:

This project is predominately in C, C++, and Java on UNIX/Linux and Windows platforms. We look for strong complex systems analysis and design skills, embodied in debugging and optimizing systems built by others as well as themselves.

Specific skills and knowledge for our project, i.e. Linux, database internals, web technology (EJB, JSPs, servlets, XML, XSL, HTML) and human computer interaction. We would like to understand the depth of their skills and conceptual understanding, along with the development environment with which they are most comfortable.

The students are expected to show flexibility in working with IBM technologies like Lotus Domino, DB/2 and Websphere Portal Server. Their main objective will be to architect and implement a prototype of an Extreme Profile Store in DB/2 and to read in profiles from existing profiling software solutions.

Jason Jho, Extreme Currently, Jason, without being asked, is an 'avid evangelizer' of the Blue alumni 2001 Extreme Blue program at Tufts University because of his incredible internship experience last summer. Before you hear about Jason's experience working at IBM, take a look at some of his prior internships. According to Jason, they were by no means, 'the making coffee types'.

Background experience Jason was carefully selected for the Extreme Blue program as a result of his prior experience and significant accomplishments as an undergraduate student. Jason's main interests lie in web/internet technology and human- computer interaction. Prior to Extreme Blue, Jason worked at Pseudo Programs, Inc, the world's largest streaming media production company, where he played an integral role in developing and restructuring their interactive TV operating system and multi-tiered web architecture. In addition, while at school, Jason worked on a public web installation under the guidance of Andruid Kerne, an internationally renowned artist known for his work and theory on interactive learning interfaces. Jason is not all about computers and technology. He also enjoys a 'normal' life when not coding by playing sports, in particular basketball.

The Extreme Blue experience is in a league of it's own. "Extreme Blue stands on top is because it offers an opportunity to make things happen. Working with top technical leaders alone is enough to make Extreme Blue the creme of the crop experience, however, with the combination of cool kids, free housing (with ballerinas of course ...), amazing mentors, and a great work environment, nothing beats it". - Just to elaborate, last summer, the Cambridge students lived at Emerson College. The College also houses many other summer programs throughout the summer, including the Boston Ballet.

Life changing experience Jason never thought a summer internship job could be life changing. According to Jason, "Extreme Blue was it! It was an amazing opportunity for me to work with a team of sheer talent and to be able to contribute my technical skills to a real world project. The resources and people at IBM are rock solid and have given me plenty of opportunity to stretch and exercise my technical skills. Deciding to partake in this internship has produced a handful of memories and a chance to network with some of the world's top talent. Above all, the diversity of IBM was the cornerstone of my experience. The people, the projects, and the passion together created a truly dynamic internship experience."

We all know that technical people see right through all of that 'marketing fluff'. The Extreme Blue program, according to Jason, was all that it advertised, especially the long hours, exposure to great technical and business resources, challenging projects, and a dynamic lab environment. "The Extreme Blue experience completely turned my attitude around with a treasure trove of resources and great people. It delivered on helping the interns exercise communication skills as well as technical skills. It delivered on building confidence, on fostering growth, and most importantly, it delivered on the fun". importantly, it delivered on the fun".

Learning Experience IBM is committed to nurturing its employees with endless challenges, aka as 'career growing pains', and continuos learning. Jason actually admitted that he gained knowledge in the realm of technical tools, software engineering tactics, as well as a newly inspired interest in Linux and open source technology. As a result of his experience at IBM, Jason feels that he developed a more mature approach to problem solving, a confidence to handle even the most difficult situations, and learned the value of strong communication and team collaboration. Jason now sees the bigger picture of the professional world and understands the importance of integrating communication and technical expertise. "Learning to bounce ideas off each other, to value every input, and to be able to mold brainstorming sessions into fruition was an intensely exciting experience".

Jason worked on a Knowledge Management project sponsored by Software Group. His team developed prototypes for visualizing information gathered by the Lotus Discover server. The Lotus Discovery System (LDS) helps firms discover, preserve and re-use knowledge assets through a sophisticated KKM tool with subject matter expert identification capabilities. The project resulted in providing further market innovation and differentiation by giving LDS new visualization capabilities to understand the ebb and flow of information , and helping diagnose the specific knowledge needs of an organization.

Networking Experience It's all about who you know. The Extreme Blue staff works hard to expose top technical and business talent to our IBM's business and technical leaders. Jason enjoyed shmoozing because he learned first hand (not just what you read in the media) more about IBM technology, our vision, and what it will take to become a great technical leader one day.

Under the leadership of distinguished staff and mentors, the challenges were limitless. "The numerous opportunities to speak with distinguished names throughout IBM and to my fellow interns was an experience that cannot be taught in school". Jason has a good rapport with his project mentor, and still keeps in touch. The mentor experience was much more 'interesting' than he expected. Hey Jason - what do you mean by 'interesting?' Jason was also very impressed with the caliber of his peers. Jason commented that the Extreme Blue staff did a 'phenomenal job' of selecting talented students that were both passionate about their work and other interests as well. "Sharing individual strengths and learning off each other added tremendous value to the experience. To this day, I keep in contact with most Extreme Blue peers".

New Experiences Jason is currently a co-op at Lotus during the semester, and he has accepted a position with IBM working with the WebSphere Application Server development team in Raleigh, North Carolina. Jason is excited about his upcoming position and working with a talented team at IBM. This summer, Extreme Blue will open a lab in Raliegh, so Jason, you are always welcome to stop by the lab!

Daniel Rabinovitz, 2000 Ah yes, the thrill and exultation of hunting for that ever-elusive, truly Extreme Blue Alumni rewarding and character-building internship experience. Hardly the easiest of all missions in college, the internship hunt is often a game of chance. The mission, should you choose to accept it, is often littered with under par stints at either local companies with no formal program, or with BIG BUSINESS where you are nothing but a spit bubble in a typhoon. When I spoke with Daniel Rabinovitz, he had a different tale to tell, with high praise for his ultimate summer internship experience that began as a thought in his head when he was a wee freshman...

... When Dan wasn't busy tossing the javelin around during his freshman year at Cornell University, he was working, working, working toward starting something big. His college career came to a frothy head in the summer of 2000, where he participated in the iSCSI (Internet Small Computer System Interface) Project at the Almaden location. Often faced with technical challenges in his day-to-day activities, working with great people helped grease the chute.

Cool Projects Extreme Blue provided for Dan the opportunity to work on cutting edge projects that actually do see the light of day. His internship also helped to dispel the old school impression that IBM needs to loosen its tie: "I learned a LOT," confirms Daniel, "I learned about Windows 2000 device drivers, some Linux stuff (I had never used Linux before), and I learned that IBM is doing some really cool stuff even though most college aged students see IBM as a very old and dull company."

Innovative People Dan began his summer with a head full of expectations. He expected to be faced with a challenging and useful project, to learn a lot, to meet some of the leaders in IBM, and to start a people network. Did these expectations get met? "Extreme Blue met those expectations. I was really hoping to work on something that would be marketed and would actually be used by more than 10 people in the world (as was the project at my previous internship), and iSCSI is certainly getting recognition." Peer interaction and mentor guidance can put the top on the muffin or the tooth in the green beans when in come to internships.

"Other internship programs throw you into an existing team where your contributions are minimal. And you're working with much older people, people you can't relate to. [my peers] were all really smart. It's good to see how other people your own age think when it comes to solving difficult problems. I don't know how to quantify what i learned from them, i doubt there was any one specific thing. I keep in touch with some of them. It's difficult because we are all across the country now." Even Dan's mentor can't escape the curtain of praise Dan is doling out! "My mentor (Steven Hetzler), was phenomenal. I got along great with him. I kept in touch with him throughout my senior year at Cornell, but I haven't spoken to him much recently." Steven Hetzler, if you're out there and reading this...

A Networking Experience A Networking Experience Networking. The buzzword that will never die. While in higher education you were expected to leap at every networking opportunity that skittered by - even if that opportunity arose by the dumpster. Another major goal of the Extreme Blue program is to provide their interns with a veritable buffet of networking opportunities. How did this wash with Dan? It was "...GREAT. I loved it. It was great to be working with people my own age," and also to be exposed to business and technical leaders. "It was good to see that IBM is a forward thinking company. This is something that is not evident at recruiting events on college campuses. I'm sure that while the business and technical leaders I met know the Extreme Blue name, I'm doubtful if any of them know my name. It was valuable in the sense that we got to see what IBM was doing throughout the company and where the leaders thought the company was heading. This is something that I never got or would have gotten at company info-sessions."

Royi Ronen, 2001 Some people just get it. And one of those people is Royi Ronen. Royi is Extreme Blue Alumni trundling through his third year as a student in the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. Unlike other students, though, Royi spent a summer working with cutting edge technology, innovative teams, and a dynamic work environment. Before he leaves Technion, and even while still plugging away, Royi has his Extreme Blue internship experience to look back on, and to draw references from.

Cool Projects Royi spent his Extreme Blue summer at IBM Haifa research labs in Israel as part of a four-student group that developed a proof-of-concept for active services in a wireless environment. They used a technology called "Amit," which is a technology developed by Haifa research labs. It is aimed at improving business productivity. The project showed how "Amit" improves the productivity of a taxi station, one of many examples in which it is applicable. With many internships, the projects you get to work on are temporary -- put together expressly for the internship and then scrapped when the students head back to classes. Not so with Extreme Blue! Not only did Royi get to work with cutting edge technology during his Extreme Blue summer, but his foray into active technologies has led into a permanent position at IBM. And "Amit" technology was far from temporary: "Amit" was announced as a research accomplishment by IBM.

Innovative People The technology was great, the project was challenging, but what about the people? "I think very highly of my Extreme Blue peers. They are all brilliant students and nice people, too. I keep in contact with all of them." So see, teamwork, cooperation, and mutual respect really DO exist outside the Brady Bunch. When Royi's ultimate internship experience ended, he still couldn't shake his tour guide. That's right, one of his ExB mentors is the manager of his current group and the other is a member of the group, so he certainly keeps in touch with them -- even physically, as they rub elbow while jostling for position at the watercooler.

A Networking and Learning Experience "Where do I go from here?" is a popular lament heard by post-students who are pounding the pavement for a good career path after (or in Royi's case, DURING) college. However, if you've got a thick chunk of contacts in your sweaty little hands after a summer of networking, you're all set. Extreme Blue opens up networking doors that otherwise might remain closed. "We were taken abroad, met students from many countries and presented our project," says Royi. "We had weekly seminars, delivered by researchers from IBM England, Germany, Israel and Switzerland. Some of the lectures were indeed eye-openers to things that I didn't see in university."

And why did Royi choose to stick with IBM? "I chose it because I like the work and people here." Rock on, Royi.
