OccupationaL Classification One of the many unique features of the 1961 Census consists of the two-way classification of non-agricultural workers by industry and occupation. While industry refers to the kind of establishment in which the person works, the occupation of a person is the kind of work which he or she performs, due regard being paid to the condition under which it is performed. The nature of the factory, business or service in which the person is employed has no bearing upon the clqssification of his occu pation, except to the extent that it enables the nature of his duties to be more clec:lrly defined. For example, a cjane driver may be employed in a shipyard, an engineering work or in building and construction, but this has no bearing upon his occupation and all crane drivers are classified to the same occupation group. It must be clear from what has been stated above that the exact implication of the term 'occupation' as used in the present Census differs from the concept attributed to it in the past Census~s when it used to indicate generally the means of subsistence or livelihood of the supporting sector of the economy.
