New trees have just been planted - in a scheme that has seen the footways widened and the carriageway made single vehicle width, with loading, taxi and parking bays. The footpaths have been repaved in local York stone and street furniture updated. The improvements support the pedestrian links between the High Street and the Treadmills retail and leisure development on the former prison site, upgrading the key links between the main shopping area and the new development, providing high quality pedestrian friendly connections around the town centre. The work is part of a joint £4.5m project for town centre improvements between Hambleton District Council and County Council. The project has received £3.2m from the government’s Local Growth Fund, secured through the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership, with the remaining cost being borne by CNDCL (Central Northallerton Development Company), the developers of Treadmills and an element of match funding from Hambleton District Council and Northallerton BID. Improvements have also been made to two ginnels, New Row and Central Arcade. To make them more inviting, the ginnels have been surfaced in York stone and the boundary walls enhanced.
