Notts 1911 – Part 1

This is the Kipling family group with the largest number of households in the 1911 census. All originate with William Kipling who married Ann Fleeman at Marnham in 1765 (‘both of Grasthorp’). See Appendix 1 for William’s origins.

They had children William (1767?), John (1768), Joseph (1771), Benjamin (1777), Ruth (1779), Robert (1780), Mary (1782), George (1783), Gervas (1786), Sarah (1789) and Ann (1797)1. All were baptised at the nearby parish of Laxton.

William paid window tax in 1771 (of 3 shillings on six windows; most houses in Laxton having 6 or 7 windows taxed).

Ma S 16 : Ma B 192/1176: Laxton window tax return, 1771

William (75) and wife Ann (72) both died in 1814 and daughter Mary in 1816, all ‘of Lexington’ and buried at Laxton.2

John (1768)

1 Ann would have been an unfeasible 57 or 58 in 1797 if her age at death was correct. This might therefore have been a child of son William and Mary or a disguised illegitimate child of a daughter (or, of course, a clerical or transcription error). 2 Lexington is another name for Laxton, being the family name of the long-time lords of the manor. John probably married a Mary Taylor, at , further north in the county, in 1798.3 A daughter, Elizabeth, was baptised there in 1799. A further daughter, Ann, was baptised at adjacent Everton, in 1801. Mary (1804), Sarah (1807), Ann (1810) and Ruth (1812) followed.

Mary died in 1813 and John remarried, to Elizabeth Cobb, at Sutton cum Loud in 1815. Further children were Elizabeth (1816), William (1819), Martha (1821) and John (1824). I have not identified when the first Elizabeth and Ann died, which they presumably did. John (senior) must also have died by the time of the 1839 tithe apportionment.

Elizabeth, daughter Elizabeth and Sarah (probably Sarah Ann, an illegitimate daughter of Ann, bpt Everton 1833) were still there in 1841.

Joseph (1771)

Joseph married Mary Gabbitas at Everton in 1803. I can find no evidence that they had children. Could this be them (Joseph is 10 years younger than would be expected and the age gap to Mary seems large)?

Scaftworth 1841

Stamford Mercury - Friday 24 February 1843

It is not known when Joseph died.

Benjamin (1777)

Benjamin married Elizabeth Roe at Weston in 1799. A son Joseph was baptised there in 1800 and a daughter, Hannah, at Marnham in 1802 (when Benjamin was a labourer of Skegby). William (1804), Mary (1808), Ann (1810), George (1813) and Benjamin (1815) followed.

William died in Glossop in 1913.

William (1804)

William married Sarah Palmer at Marnham in 1836. Sarah was is mentioned in the Skegby (Marnham) tithe apportionment of 1839 (possibly a property she had inherited).

Marnham 1841

It is possible that William died in the following decade and Sarah married George Day at Normanton in 1849.

George (1813)

George married Ann Cullen at Cromwell in November 1847. Three months later he was dead.

Stamford Mercury - Friday 25 February 1848

A son, George, was born posthumously in August or September 1848.

In 1849, the Southwell Poor Law Union wrote to the Poor Law Board at Somerset House, asking whether Ann and the children could be removed to Marnham, where George had his settlement (i.e was entitled to parish relief)

The Board replied asking for further details.

These were supplied and included the information that Anne and the family had been in the Southwell Union Workhouse for some time.

Although no copy of the Board’s advice has been seen, a note on the rear of the above document dated early 1850 suggests that it might have been that the family was not removable.

I have not identified what happened to Ann and the children subsequently.

In 1851, John was probably lodging at nearby Elkesley, where his mother was probably working as a servant (describing herself as a widow).

John later worked in London as a gardener, where he married in 1868, seemingly naming a fictional father.

By 1871, he was Head Gardener at Knebworth House, mother Mary living with him. A son, John Francis Joseph (Frank), had been born in 1870, although I cannot trace a registration or baptism.

John himself was baptised as an adult in 1872.

Appendix 1

A William Kipling, son of Richard Kipling and wife Gate Ruth (sic)4 was baptised in Norwich in 1706. This would fit with William’s age at death (see below).

1706, All Saints, Norwich.

He may well be the William Kipline who later married Anne Willis on 4 May 1732 at Brant Broughton, Lincs.

Children Anne (1733), William (1734-37), Mary (1736), William (1739) and Elizabeth (1741) were all baptised at North and South Clifton, around 12 miles from Brant Broughton.

William and Anne then moved to Marnham, where Sarah (1744) and Jane (1746) were born.

Ann died in 1778 (‘of Normanton’) and was buried at Marnham. William died in 1785 at age 80 (‘Labourer of Normanton upon Trent. Died at Walesby’) and was also buried at Marhnam.

It is known from two y-chromosome DNA tests (see ‘Notts Kiplings’ Parts 2 and 3) that the Notts Kiplings are related to those of Baldersdale. However, I have not identified which Richard could have been William’s father. Richard Kipling of the Newhouses tree (b1670, mentioned in father William’s will Jan 1718/9) was a gunsmith in London like his brother Charles (in whose will he was mentioned in 1735). It is not obvious why he should be in Norwich nor why his son remained in that part of the country. Nor is it known whether Richard ever married. Neither have I identified a suitable William from Baldersdale if he was not the one baptised in Norwich.

Intriguingly, the following record exists [NYRO QSB 1797 1/15/35]

Bill of expenses [of William Parker conveyor of vagrants], for vagrants conveyed from Kirby Hill to Neasham and Blewgrass since last Michaelmas Sessions. Includes orders for the conveyance of vagrants from Kirby Hill to Neasham in county Durham, made between 25 August 1796 and 9 December 1796. Includes:

- order to convey John Kipling to his place of settlement in Romaldkirk, with a pass dated 10 December 1796 from one of the Justices for Newark on Trent in Nottinghamshire

4 Could this be Gertrude? However, I have found no records of a Richard Kipling marrying a Gertrude around this time.
