Box 970 Kodiak, AK 99615 (907) 486-6498 email: [email protected] PROFILE A highly creative, energetic individual, dedicated environmental educator and conservationist who thrives on wild places and natural history. Kodiak, Alaska has been Stacy’s home since 1980. She was born in La Jolla California in 1947 and grew up in Bronxville, New York and Woodside, California. After getting her Bachelor’s Degree, she worked in Yosemite National Park, Glacier Bay National Park, and Katmai National Park. She returned to college in 1977 and earned a Master’s in Science Teaching degree before moving to Kodiak Alaska where she taught high school biology until she retired in 2000. She has lived in Alaska for the last 35 years. EXPERIENCE Coordinator, Kodiak Gray Whale Project 2000-2010 In 2000, Stacy found a dead gray whale on a Kodiak beach and over a period of 8 years rallied 150 community members and partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wild- life Service to treat the bones and reconstruct the skeleton for a permanent display at the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. She received a grant from the Alaska Conservation Foundation in 2005 to finance the project and formed her own nonprofit organization that continues to support ongoing educational and art projects that further the awareness of conservation issues surrounding Gray Whales and the marine environment. Field Botanist, Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge 2005-2010 Stacy has been studying and documenting coastal Alaskan botany since 1973. Since 2005, she has conducted botanical inventory and plant community research in the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. She collects plants for the University of Alaska Museum of the North Herbarium and is considered the local expert on Kodiak botany. She recently self-published a field guide for the flora of Kodiak and Southcentral Alaska. Naturalist - Kodiak Natural History Tours 2004-2009 When cruise ships come to town and Stacy isn’t in the field or volunteering at the visitor center, she conducts marine wildlife tours aboard a local boat, The U-Rascal. She also guides individual flora tours on the Kodiak road system and gives presentations locally and statewide on the flora of Kodiak. Science Teacher, Kodiak Island Borough School District 1980-2000 Stacy taught Biology, Earth Science, Botany and Environmental Studies at Kodiak High School. In addition she was the Academic Coach for a number of competitive extra curricular activities. Adjunct Faculty, Kodiak College 1983-2004 Stacy taught adult education evening classes off and on including, Botany, Ex- ploring Kodiak’s Plant Life, and Birding for Beginners. In addition, she re- ceived a grant to create a student herbarium at the college. page 2 Host and Co-Producer, My Green Earth, KMXT Public Radio Station 1991-1998 This award-winning weekly radio show on the environment aired throughout Alaska and nationally by way of public radio stations as well as internationally through Radio For Peace International, the broadcast arm of the United Nations. Stacy wrote and co-produced over 200 individual shows on various topics from bears and bees to the bottom of the sea. Vice-President Al Gore commended Stacy on her work in a speech at The American University in 1996. Musician - “WATERBOUND” Recordings 1985-2009 As a founding member of a local folk music group WATERBOUND, Stacy has been writing, performing and promoting her original music about Alaskan animals and various marine topics. The group has produced four recordings including the most recent: An Alaskan Maritime Retrospective. Ranger Naturalist, Biologist, Environmental Education - National Park Service1971-1979 Working as an environmental educator, biologist, and park ranger naturalist, Stacy worked in Yosemite, Glacier Bay and Katmai National Parks. EDUCATION 1971 - University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado Bachelor’s of Fine Arts and Science Degree - Double Major (BFA) 1980 - Antioch New England Graduate School, Keene, New Hampshire Master’s Degree in Science Teaching and Environmental Education (MST) Additional 70 hours of continuing education courses including graduate courses in Marine Biology, Univ. of Washington.
