As an ensemble it has remained steadfast to its original aim: recently 7he New York Times wrote of a concert by the Waverly Consort at New York's Town Hall: "At a time when so many early musicians have moved on to standard repertory, it is wonderful to see others still plying their specialty with real imagination and commitment." The Waverly Consort offers music of extraordinary variety, ranging from the lOth to the 18th centuries; from virtually every European country, including Eastern Europe and Russia. This exciting and diverse repertory includes religious and secular music; purely instrumental music and vocal music, both a cappella and accompanied; solemn music composed for austere cathedrals and delightful madrigals for flirtatious lovers; aristocratic music for the courts of kings and queens, as well as the earthy music of peasants in the fields and townspeople in the streets of the great cities; music for churches, theatres, public processions, private gatherings, and festivities. The Waverly Consort's first performance was given in 1964 at a Gala Dinner of the Poetry Society of America, commemorating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's birthday. Exactly two years later, the Waverly Consort made its official public debut at Carnegie Recital Hall, and soon afterwards moved to Alice Tully Hall for its regular subscription series. By April 15, 1989 it had given 100 concerts at Lincoln Center. The ensemble has performed across the length and breadth of North America; it has toured South America, Britain and the Far East, appeared at major international festivals, including the Casals Festival, the Hong Kong festival, and the Madeira Bach Festival; given workshops; and has been featured on many radio and television broadcasts. It has made several major recordings: two for Vanguard Records, and six on the CBS Masterworks label, including a best-selling CD, "A Renaissance Christmas Celebration," and most recently, "1492: Music From the Age of Discovery," on the Angel-EM! Classics label. This season The Waverly Consort salutes the Columbian Quincentenary with a fascinating new program entitled "THE YEAR 1492: Spanish Music in the Age of Discovery." 1492 was a momentous year on the stage of world history; on New Year's night, the splendid Moorish palace of the Alhambra ·was handed over to the conquering Christians, and soon after King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella entered Granada in triumph. On March 31, an edict was issued ordering all Jews to accept conversion or leave Spain. And on August 3, Christopher Columbus set sail on his historic voyage. This program encompasses vibrant Moorish-influenced songs recounting the fall of Granada; elegant Christian court and chapel music; and songs of the outcast Sefardim, sung in new lands and preserving to this day the love and language of their original home. To further salute the momentous Quincentenary, the Waverly Consort has just provided the musical score to a 60-minute film on Columbus and the music of his era entitled "1492: A Portrait in Music," scheduled to be broadcast on PBS this year. .
