Member Ferenc Péter Csirkés This thesis aims to present an analysis of the interaction between Christians and Muslims in the west of Asia Minor at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries after two religious-social movements in the Byzantine and the Rum Seljuk Empires, the Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion. After the unsuccessful rebellion of the Babais, antinomian dervishes who had migrated to the west of Asia Minor because of a heavy oppression as well as inquisition by the state and had a different religious belief apart from the mainstream religious understanding of the center initiated missionary activities in the regions along the Byzantine border. Accordingly, these dervishes had joined the military activities of the Turcoman chieftains against the Byzantines and interacted with the local Christian population and religious figures. As a result of this religious interaction, messianic and ascetic beliefs were increasingly present among the Greek-speaking population as well as spiritual leaders of western Anatolia. Since such interfaith and cross- cultural interaction had a considerable impact on the course of all these events, this thesis focuses on them to create a better understanding of the appearance of the Hesychasm in the Byzantine spiritual environment in the later period. -

8: Historical Background: the Abrahamic Faiths Author: Susan Douglass Overview: This lesson provides background on three Abrahamic faiths, or the world religions called Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It is a brief primer on their geographic and spiritual origins, the basic beliefs, scriptures, and practices of each faith. It describes the calendars and major celebrations in each tradition. Aspects of the moral and ethical beliefs and the family and social values of the faiths are discussed. Comparison and contrast among the three Abrahamic faiths help to explain what enabled their adherents to share in cultural, economic, and social life, and what aspects of the faiths might result in disharmony among their adherents. Levels: Middle grades 6-8, high school and general audiences Objectives: Students will: Define “Abrahamic faith” and identify which world religions belong to this group. Briefly describe the basic elements of the origins, beliefs, leaders, scriptures and practices of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Compare and contrast the basic elements of the three faiths. Explain some sources of harmony and friction among the adherents of the Abrahamic faiths based on their beliefs. Time: One class period, or outside class assignment of 1 hour, and ca. 30 minutes class discussion. Materials: Student Reading “The Abrahamic Faiths”; graphic comparison/contrast handout, overhead projector film & marker, or whiteboard. Procedure: 1. Copy and distribute the student reading, as an in-class or homework assignment. This decline in the importance of Islamic doctrine has been attributed primarily to the spread of European colonialism. The western powers that ruled Muslim lands replaced much of the existing law in colonized territories with laws modeled after those applied in the home country. The trend toward a narrower role for Islamic law reversed itself in the latter part of the twentieth century. Since the 1970s, a number of majority Muslim states have passed laws prescribing the application of a form of Islamic law on matters that had long been governed exclusively by laws derived from the western legal tradition. A central objective of many of these Islamization programs has been to implement Islamic criminal law, and a large share of the new Islamic crimes that have been passed relate to sex offenses. This paper looks at the enactment and enforcement of recent criminal legislation involving sexual morality in the Indonesian province of Aceh. In the early 2000s, the provincial legislature for Aceh passed a series of laws prescribing punishments for Islamic crimes, the first such legislation in the country’s history. The first piece of legislation, enacted in 2002, authorizes punishment in the form of imprisonment, fine, or caning for acts defined as violating Islamic orthodoxy or religious practice.1 The 2002 statute also established an Islamic police force called the Wilayatul Hisbah charged 1. -

SCRIPTURAL STUDIES Joseph Smith's Interpretation of Isaiah in the Book of Mormon David P. Wright THE BOOK OF MORMON (hereafter BM), which Joseph Smith published in 1830, is mainly an account of the descendants of an Israelite family who left Jerusalem around 600 B.C.E. to come to the New World. According to the book's story, this family not only kept a record of their history, which, added upon by their descendants, was to become the BM, but also brought with them to the Americas a copy of Isaiah's prophecies, from which the BM prophets cite Isaiah (1 Ne. 5:13; 19:22-23). Several chapters or sections of Isaiah are quoted in the BM: Isaiah 2-14 are cited in 2 Nephi 12-24; Isaiah 48-49 in 1 Nephi 20-21; Isaiah 49:22-52:2 in 2 Nephi 6:6-7,16- 8:25; Isaiah 52:7-10 in Mosiah 12:21-24; Isaiah 53 in Mosiah 14; and Isaiah 54 in 3 Nephi 22. Other shorter citations, paraphrases, and allusions are also found.1 The text of Isaiah in the BM for the most part follows the King James Version (hereafter KJV). There are some variants, but these are often in- significant or of minor note and therefore do not contribute greatly to clarifying the meaning of the text. PART ONE FOUNDATIONS: ISLAM AND THE MUGHALS CHAPTER ONE THE CATEGORIES OF DOCTRINAL ISLAM In 1095, aft er four years as an instructor at the prestigious Madrasa al- Nizamiyya in Baghdad, jurist and theologian Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali (d. 1111) resigned for personal reasons. In his Munqidh min al-Dalal, written aft er years of study that carried him from Baghdad to Damascus, Jerusalem, Hebron, Medina and Mecca, before returning him to his hometown of Tus (Iran), al-Ghazali wrote of the disillusionment with scholastic learning that drove him to seek an alternative approach to ‘Truth’.1 Th e most striking feature of his intellectual journey is that his abandonment of the Baghdad madrasa did not mean a turn away from doctrinal Islam, even in its legal form. Rather, he encountered and listed four ‘Classes of [Muslim] Seekers’ on his search, one to which he belonged while a madrasa instructor, two that he studied and rejected during his travels, and a last in which he found reason to end his search. In order, these are: (1) the mutakallimun—‘exponents of thought and intellectual speculation’; (2) the falasifa—‘exponents of logic and demonstration’; (3) the batiniyya—who ‘derive truth from an infallible imam [leader]’; and, (4) the sufi yya—who ‘possess vision and intuitive understanding’.2 It may seem inappropriate to begin a work on Islam in the transition from Mughal to post-colonial South Asia with the biography of an 11th century author whose travels never touched the region. Yet, al-Ghazali’s works, which are still widely read across the Muslim World, best illus- trate the limitations of any formula that reduces doctrinal Islam to a ‘formalism’ that is legalistic and judged locally intrusive, while sidelining all other disciplines as ‘informal’, hence, customarily accommodative.
