    ABSTRACT Title of Document: HISTORY LIMITED: THE HIDDEN POLITICS OF POSTWAR POPULAR HISTORIES. Erik Barton Christiansen, Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 Directed By: Professor James B. Gilbert, Department of History This dissertation examines popular history and collective memory in the mid-20 th century. Each chapter studies a different source of politicized history, exploring who created the history to be disseminated, what their goals and motivations were, why the historical trope particularly suited their needs and objectives, how they managed to convey ideologies through representations of the past, and how this popular history related to contemporary social and political issues. All of these “historians” – DuPont’s radio and television show, Cavalcade of America ; the History Book Club; CBS’s historical news program, You Are There ; the American Heritage Foundation’s “Freedom Train”; and the Smithsonian Institution – attempted to mold collective memory into an ideological foundation for their agendas. During a tumultuous period, at home and abroad, the past became a safer forum for political discourse, and reexamining these sources of historical information and interpretation sheds new light on postwar politics. Surprisingly, deep ideological divisions persisted well into the age of apparent consensus. However, despite significant differences, the key people in all of these cases shared the same basic assumption about the relevance of history to contemporary society. The widespread acceptance of a strong relationship between past and present in postwar American society contrasts with later attitudes toward the past. The new technologies that enabled the communication of particular historical representations and interpretations changed too, and rapidly matured into forms less suited to the dissemination of historical lessons.

    CHINA, HONG KONG AND TAIWAN ON FILM, TELEVISION AND VIDEO IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad June 2020 Introduction This is an annotated guide to non-fiction moving image materials related to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. The guide encompasses a wide variety of items from the earliest days of cinema to the present, and focuses on films, TV programs and videos with China as the main subject. It also includes theatrical newsreels (e.g. Fox Movietone News) and TV news magazines (e.g. 60 Minutes) with distinct segments related to the subject. How to Use this Guide Titles are listed in chronological order by date of release or broadcast, and alphabetically within the same year. This enables users to follow the history of the region and for the most part groups together items dealing with the same historical event and/or period (e.g. Sino-Japanese conflict, World War II, Cold War, etc.). Credits given for each entry are as follows: main title, production company, distributor / broadcaster (if different from production company), country of production (if not U.S.), release year / broadcast date, series title (if not TV), and basic personnel listings (director, producer, writer, narrator). The holdings listed are access copies unless otherwise noted. Merritt 2017 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT After three years of bitter fighting, the Korean War ended on July 27, 1953. It profoundly shaped and directed American Cold War policy for the next four decades. Korea’s place in American culture and memory, however, has seemingly been less profound. This dissertation reassesses the war’s legacy from the armistice in 1953 through the construction of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in 1995. It argues that representations of the war have shifted over time in response to contemporary social concerns, emphasizing different aspects of the war that resonated with Americans at the time. Simultaneously, the image of Korea as the Forgotten War has also shaped the war’s meaning and such a label, ironically, has had an important impact on how it has been remembered. Finally, the memory of Korea has been unable to escape the long shadows cast by other conflicts of the twentieth century, especially World War II and Vietnam. These wars have simultaneously limited and broadened the Korean War’s legacy. Taking these factors into consideration, this dissertation reassesses the Korean War’s place in American culture by tracing the various ways it has been remembered and represented.

Adviser Department of Speech PREFACE Although commercial radio in this country was horn and managed to gather up a full head of develop­ mental steam in the 1920's, the mass radio medium did not reach full maturity until two decades later when American involvement in World War II pressured radio to achieve its "finest hour." Once limited to to situation comedies and soap operas, network radio offered the human drama of death, devestation, and despair to a nation at war in the 194-0's. Radio became a companion; a constant source of information and inspiration against which the print medium could not compete. This study presents a detailed investigation of . network radio's activities during the Second World War. The networks were each composed of a main sta­ tion in New York City and a varying number of local or affiliated stations around the country. As a limit­ ing factor, the contributions of such local stations, apart from their role as network disseminators, will not be discussed.
