The New York Times on Monday featured an article on U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, R-Livonia, and the impact of his vote against President Barack Obama's stimu• lus package on his 2010 election prospects. McCotter joined all Republican members of the House of Representatives in voting against the economic stim• ulus. On the other hand, McCotter has been a vocal supporter of gov• ernment loans to General Motors and Chrysler. Among those McCotter quoted in the article by Carl Hulse was Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon, D-Redford. Often mentioned as a candidate for other offices, Dillon was puzzled by McCotter's voting against the pack• age that includes tax breaks for GM and incentives for car buyers. The article quotes Dillon, "Since when do Republicans vote against tax cuts? They are betting the farm, because if this works, I think people will remember they BILL BRESLER.! The Times article notes that McCotter, chair of the Republican Oscar party House Policy Committee, has Montina Canty photographs Mike Vinas, Stephanie Squires, Kristie Liqner, Philip Krstovski, J. Foundation fund-raiser celebrates Oscars, helps meet growing need

BY KURT KUBAN OBSERVER STAFF WRITER

Even though the Academy Awards were taking place a couple thousand miles away, there was certainly a Hollywood feel to the Canton Community Foundation's Magical Night with the Stars event at Canton's Emagine Theatre Sunday evening. From the paparazzi (vol• unteers from St. Thomas a' Becket church) that greeted guests on the red carpet just inside the door, to the large "Oscar" statue in Emagine's lobby, there was no mistaking that the party was celebrat• ing Hollywood's most cele• brated event. Guests also had the opportunity to watch the Academy Awards program on the big screen, see several Oscar-nominated films; eat gourmet food and even learn ballroom dancing steps. Police unit's job is to piece together cause of accidents
