Belscamper The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2014 Under the Supervision of Professor Joe Austin This analysis reveals the ways in which 16 Magazine functioned in 1960s American girl culture, largely due to the influence of Gloria Stavers, the magazine’s editor. Stavers used the features in 16 Magazine to become an emulous mother who guided her readers through their private fantasy space, or “Dreamsville,” as well as the Cold War culture of the 1960s. 16 Magazine, the most popular youth culture magazine of the 1960s, incorporated dominant ideologies of Cold War anxieties and presented them in subtle, yet effective ways. Profiles of pop music and television stars, advice columns, beauty features, gossip columns, and “Your Ticket to Dreamsville” contests encouraged normative gender and consumer behavior for girls, yet broadened the definitions of “appropriate” behavior and style by incorporating countercultural signifiers, while the language throughout the magazine merged youth lingo with discourses of American patriotism. This project also reveals how the relationships between 16 Magazine and youth-oriented television programs functioned as entertainment ii narratives and models for the negotiations between the public and private spheres during the Cold War era and served as predecessors to contemporary cross-media texts, yet indicate their unique nature as non-corporate transmedia narratives, dependent upon fan participation and interaction while predating new media options for interactivity. This dissertation draws upon historical, cultural, and media theories, including those of Cold War domesticity, youth and girl culture, and transmedia convergence. The interdisciplinary analysis included herein is the first scholarly research that utilizes 16 Magazine as its primary source material. iii © Copyright by Diana L. Carol Stabile encouraged my ventures into media theory and the vi application of media studies methodologies, specifically regarding mass-market magazines, to my research in girl culture and 16 Magazine in particular. My year of alternating research on Milwaukee sports with 16 Magazine’s “fave raves” was immensely enjoyable. Being awarded their Visiting Scholar Research Grant allowed me access to their astonishing collection of youth-oriented television shows I could not access anywhere else. My viewing of episodes of Shindig, Hullabaloo, Malibu U, American Bandstand, and Where the Action Is! restructured how I conceived of this project, and made my interpretations and arguments immeasurably stronger. Mark Quigley and Silvia Chilin’s enthusiasm and assistance during my weeklong visit to their archive receive my unqualified appreciation. My collection of primary source material for this project began as a hobby more than 20 years ago. However, as I realized what exactly I had in my collection and the need to acquire a much broader sample, I turned to the Internet, eBay.com in particular.     MARK LINDSAY BIO The former lead singer and co- founder of Paul Revere & the Raiders, Mark Lindsay was born in Oregon but raised in Idaho, where he began his career as the rockabilly singer in Freddy Chapman's Idaho Playboys. His bandmates were the guitar playing brothers Dick and "Mooney" White. The White Brothers had another gig playing rock and roll in the Red Hughes Band. Red later hired Paul Revere Dick on piano to join them. One night at the IOOF Hall in Caldwell, Idaho, Mark Lindsay showed up to listen, but he soon ripped off his glasses and made his way blindly to the stage, then impulsively asked if he could sing a song. He did, relished the crowd response for a few moments, and then – overcome with shyness – hastily left the hall. The next morning, Mark was back at his job at McClure's Bakery. Covered in flour and with his coke-bottle glasses back on, he was soon visited by Revere, who had come in to pick up buns for his hamburger stand. While Mark wrapped the order, Revere started talking about an incident that had happened at the dance that he played the night before. “It was the weirdest thing!” said Revere. “In the middle of the show, this skinny kid with a crazy look in his eye came up to the stage and asked to sing a song.     The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape,digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons.     International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 2367–2386 1932–8036/20170005 Between Hybridity and Hegemony in K-Pop’s Global Popularity: A Case of Girls’ Generation’s American Debut GOOYONG KIM1 Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, USA Examining the sociocultural implications of Korean popular music (K-pop) idol group Girls’ Generation’s (SNSD’s) debut on Late Show With David Letterman, this article discusses how the debut warrants a critical examination on K-pop’s global popularity. Investigating critically how the current literature on K-pop’s success focuses on cultural hybridity, this article maintains that SNSD’s debut clarifies how K-pop’s hybridity does not mean dialectical interactions between American form and Korean content. Furthermore, this article argues that cultural hegemony as a constitutive result of sociohistorical and politico- economic arrangements provides a better heuristic tool, and K-pop should be understood as a part of the hegemony of American pop and neoliberalism. Keywords: Korean popular music, cultural hybridity, cultural hegemony, neoliberalism As one of the most sought-after Korean popular music (K-pop) groups, Girls’ Generation’s (SNSD’s) January 2012 debut on two major network television talk shows in the United States warrants critical reconsideration of the current discourse on cultural hybridity as the basis of K-pop’s global popularity.     PAUL REVERE & THE RAIDERS: POP/GARAGE BAND and “LOUIE LOUIE” By Alan L. Chrisman Paul Revere, leader and keyboardist for American 60’s and 70’s band, Paul Revere & The Raiders just passed away recently. They had several big hits in the 60’s and the 70’s, such as “Kicks”, “Hungry”, “Just Like Me” “Him or Me-What’s it Gonna Be?” and “Indian Reservation”. They were known for their American Revolution costumes and pop songs, but would later be considered a garage band by the punk era. Their image and sound was created an American reaction to The Beatles and The British Invasion in the mid-60’s and they wrote and played some very catchy and popular hits. Paul Revere (his real middle name) founded the band, when he met lead vocalist, Mark Lindsay, in 1958, who was delivering buns to Revere’s restaurant in Idaho. Revere was drafted into the military, but as a conscientious objector, worked in a mental institution for a year and a half. They formed a band called The Downbeats and had a few regional hits and toured, at one point, with Leon Russell on piano. They got signed to Columbia Records because they had an early hit with the later garage band classic, “Louie Louie” in ’63. The song,”Louie Louie” has its own fascinating history: Originally written by Richard Berry in 1955, it was a minor R&B hit for him. Berry was the uncredited lead vocal on “Riot in Cell Block #9” by The Robbins who later turned into The Coasters.
